Broccoli Getting into Manga Comics Market in the U.S.A.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 2003--Broccoli International USA, Inc., the U.S. branch of multi-national multimedia company Broccoli Co. Ltd, announces their first release by Broccoli Books, the firm's new publishing division. Broccoli Books will publish English manga -- Japanese graphic novels -- as well as other books, including art books, film books, and more.
Broccoli Book's first title, Di Gi Charat Theater -- Dejiko's Summer Vacation, will be released on November 18, 2003. It will be available in major bookstores as well as Japanese animation stores and comic shops throughout North America.

Di Gi Charat is the mascot character for Broccoli Co. Ltd, and over a span of five years has appeared in various mediums including television, novels, comics, radio, music CDs, and a feature film. Di Gi Charat has yet to come out in the United States, but Broccoli hopes that the manga will be the beginning of a Di Gi Charat phenomenon.

The U.S. market for manga is estimated to be approximately $100 million annually. The target audience for English manga is young females ranging from pre-teens to early twenties.

"We already have a huge fan base for Di Gi Charat nationwide already, and most of them are young teenagers who enjoy dressing up like the characters," said Broccoli International USA President Hideki Uchino.

Broccoli Books will be doing most of the work in-house, beginning with licensing, production, and distribution.

Broccoli Books Editor Satsuki Yamashita stated, "We are working with the highly acclaimed Synch-Point production team who produced and translated FLCL, an extremely popular show which is airing for the second time on Cartoon Network next week. We hope to bring the same high quality to our manga consumers."

Broccoli Books will be circulating over 270,000 units in print their first year, with expected sales of $1.5 million in 2004. Approximately 30 to 40 books will be released by the end of 2004.
