Pop Japan Travel's Mind Over Manga Tour Adds Meeting with Ghibli Art Director, Visit to Nippon Animation

Jun 30th 2008
The Mind Over Manga Tour this Aug. 21 to 27 will include a meeting with anime legend Nizo Yamamoto and a visit to Nippon Animation, one of Japan's most beloved anime studios and producer of the historic "World Masterpiece Theater" series that helped give Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata their start. Yamamoto-sensei will also introduce the group to the art staff he directed on this year's acclaimed anime "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time."

Yamamoto-sensei has served as art director on many acclaimed anime, including "Princess Mononoke" and "Grave of the Fireflies." His luscious background art has also appeared in "Spirited Away," "Perfect Blue," "Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro" and more. Tour guests will have a chance to ask him about his more than 30 years in the anime industry, take pictures and ask for autographs -- so bring your DVDs!

Since its founding in 1975, Nippon Animation has produced some of Japan's best loved anime, including "Maya the Bee," "Dog of Flanders," "Locke the Superman," and some of the first work from Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Nizo Yamamoto: "Future Boy Conan" and "Anne of Green Gables."

Pop Japan Travel is honored and grateful to Yamamoto-sensei and Nippon Animation for offering our guests this unprecedented look at anime's golden age.

But this is just the first artist we'll be meeting, so stay tuned!

Mind Over Manga also includes a backstage visit to the Comitia original indie comics event, plus Hayao Miyazaki's Ghibli Museum, and lots of exclusive privileges and discounts at Japanese otaku retailers like Kotobukiya and Mandarake. Of course, we'll also include our tried-and-true tour of Tokyo, providing a mind-blowing look at the world's most populous urban area, plus a few excursions outside the city. An optional Kyoto and Osaka tour takes guests straight to the thousand-year capital's most stunning sites, plus a riverboat ride down the lovely Hozu River and even more anime and manga events. Another optional tour of Hiroshima includes a ferry ride to the holy island of Miyajima, renowned as one of Japan's three most beautiful landscapes, and the city's important and sobering peace museum.

The Mind Over Manga tour, including round-trip airfare from LAX to Tokyo, full hotel accommodations, transport in Japan, entry fees, bilingual guides and customized guidebook, is $2,198 plus a $235 fuel surcharge. The Kyoto and Osaka option is $898, while Hiroshima is $100.

Tour events and fuel surcharge are subject to change.
