PONYO - SPECIAL PRE-RELEASE SCREENING
Animation, Hayao Miyazaki, Japan, 2008/9, 101 min

In English - Recommended all ages
Sun, Aug 9, 3:00pm at Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway (at 95th)

NYICFF is absolutely thrilled to present the first East Coast screening of PONYO, the latest tour de force from Academy Award winning animation master Hayao Miyazaki. Perfect for audiences of all ages, PONYO is a return to the innocent pleasures of My Neighbor Totoro, with dazzling and entirely hand-drawn visuals that start simply and erupt into fluid, cascading symphonies of color.

The story centers on the loving relationship between a five-year-old boy, Sosuke, and a magical goldfish named Ponyo, the young daughter of a sorcerer father and a sea-goddess mother. After a chance encounter, Ponyo yearns to become a human so she can be with Sosuke--and her desperate attempts to get to the surface trigger an undersea explosion of fantasy and color. As to be expected with Miyazaki, the film is awash in pure unbridled imagination and visual wonder--but it is the tender warmth, humor, and devotion of Ponyo and Sosuke that form the emotional heart of the film.

All-star English language voice cast features Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Tina Fey, Lily Tomlin, Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas.

"Wondrous! Teeming with imagination! Ponyo possesses an almost demonic childish energy
and delight in form." - Variety

"A superb work of fantasy that transcends age barriers!" - Hollywood Reporter

"There aren't enough superlatives to adequately describe Hayao Miyazaki's latest masterpiece, a
delightfully sweet, extraordinarily imaginative children's fantasy." - Premiere

TROUBLE AT TIMPETILL - US PREMIERE
Live Action, Nicolas Bary, France, 2008, 94 min

In French with English subtitles - Recommended ages 8 to adult
Sat & Sun, Aug 22 & 23, 11:00am at IFC Center, 323 Sixth Avenue (at West Third)

NYICFF presents the US Premiere of Trouble at Timpetill (Les Enfants de Timplebach), a Roald Dahl-flavored spin on The Lord of the Flies set in a lavishly designed fantasy world reminiscent of the films of Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The children of the rustic village of Timpetill are unmanageable: they play pranks, destroy shops, get into fights, and are generally dismissive of adult authority... until one morning, the kids wake up to discover that their parents have abandoned the town and left them to run things on their own. After a brief binge of freedom, in which the anarchic youth trash the school and overdose on candy, toys, makeup, and motorcycles, the food runs out and the chaos takes on a more sinister tone, with the kids splitting into rival factions to battle for control the town's scarce resources.
