EirtaKon Scoops Best Event at Clubs & Societies Awards

Ireland's largest anime event recognised by leading university.

DUBLIN, IRELAND – April 1st, 2010 - Eirtakon last night won Best Event at the annual Dublin City University Clubs & Societies Awards, besting out stiff competition from other long-established and high profile events.

The awards ceremony took place in The Helix, also the venue for Eirtakon 2010 this November, and was attended by faculty, society and committee members from all of the major clubs in DCU. Awards were voted on by a panel made up of SPC (Societies and Publications Committee) and SCC (Sports Clubs Committee) members, and shows the continued growth and success of Ireland's largest anime convention.

Eirtakon 09 took place on the weekend of November 13th – 15th and attracted anime fans from all over the world, with over 1,000 people being squeezed into The Hub at DCU. Events included several screening rooms playing the latest and greatest from Japan, along with plenty of European exclusives, gaming tournaments, cosplay competitions, a maid café, workshops and panels running all weekend and the biggest selection of traders ever seen, selling everything from DVDs to manga and plushies. Our guest of honour and star of the show, Kevin M. Connolly, was given a huge Eirtakon welcome by every attendee, with his panels on fan dubbing proving to be a huge hit with participants.

“We're really overjoyed at this,” said Stephen Fox, current Eirtakon director. “I'd like to thank everyone who voted for us, it means a lot to everyone on the committee. This further displays Eirtakon's growth over the last few years that we can be picked above so many other big-name events. Roll on Eirtakon 2010 this November!”

Eirtakon 09's co-director Sean Hand was also recognised for his tireless work, not just with Eirtakon but with countless other societies in DCU, and given a First Five award. This award is given to five people every year in recognition of their admirable dedication to DCU societies.
