In this seminal anime cyberpunk film, a biker gang becomes embroiled in the machinations of a secret government project in dystopian Neo-Tokyo. One of the teenage bikers manifests his latent psychic powers in the process, and his best friend is determined to save him from the catastrophic consequences that seem certain to befall the post-apocalyptic world. Katsuhiro Ōtomo spared no production expenses in adapting his epic manga, and the result was soon regarded as a masterpiece in animation. Even as "Akira" approaches its 25th anniversary, its legacy as a landmark anime film is secure.
