Persona 4 the Golden Animation
Episode 10

by Miles Nelson,

Episode 10, “Not a Friend Anymore” contains some major revelations about the central character Marie, but unfortunately gives the other members of the main cast little to do, and ultimately comes off as one of the lesser episodes of the series.

Persona 4 the Golden Animation has always focused on Marie, so there is some satisfaction to be found here when we are finally told who she really is. Unfortunately, while we have a general understanding of her identity, the show's cut-up plot means we don't have enough details about the fictional universe to understand what this revelation means. We also learn Teddie's origin, but this too is given without context. The explanations themselves come in the form of monologues by various characters, which are paradoxically long and verbose while at the same time having little to say. Some scenes are good, particularly the confrontation between Marie and Yu, but these are far and few between. The monologues, combined with multiple fight scenes, give off the impression that the show is playing for time, slowing the pace of events to a crawl in order to fill out the runtime. As a result, episode 10 is the least engaging episode thus far.

While it is an overall sub-par experience, there are some bright spots: the voice acting continues to be excellent, and the cinematography is well done too. While the animation is still nothing to write home about, the unearthly “Hollow Forest” landscape where most of the action takes place is visually distinct and rather beautiful. Still, the best element of the series, the ensemble cast, is very poorly utilized, and the ending is extremely odd and confusing. With its languid pace, lack of context, and head-scratching conclusion, episode 10 may be the poorest offering of the series thus far.

Rating: D+
