Glasgow, UK, 23 February 2023 -
Venture into the depths of the creative mind with an innovative and exciting stop-motion Sci-Fi thriller about humanity on the brink of extinction having to confront the consequences of their hubris. A passion project that was animated solely by its visionary director Takahide Hori, Anime Limited are excited to announce that their mission to showcase the unique and rising talents in Japanese animation continues with JUNK HEAD, which they will be releasing exclusively in cinemas across the United Kingdom and Ireland from 24th April 2023.

In a dystopian future, humanity has attained longevity at the cost of its ability to reproduce. An artificial species was created to counteract the resulting dwindling workforce, until it revolted and formed its own subterranean society. When humanity is ravaged by a virus, a lone human is sent into the depths below to investigate the secrets of how this new species procreates, only to discover the monstrous ways they have evolved… making a desperate struggle for survival all the more literal.

A film seven-years in the making and told over 140,000 shots, JUNK HEAD was created almost entirely by director Takahide Hori, who was responsible for everything from composing the film's score, to sculpting the puppets and designing the sets! JUNK HEAD started life as a short film that was celebrated by Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro as a “one-man band of deranged brilliance”, and has won awards including the Cigogne d'or prize for animated film at the 2021 Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival.

Synopsis:
JUNK HEAD is an expansive stop-motion sci-fi action thriller, meticulously styled and set in a dark and perilous universe that harbours surprises around every corner.

When a virus wreaks havoc on the surface, an expedition is launched to study how this newly developed species procreate, in an ultimate but desperate attempt to save humankind.

Over seven years in the making, JUNK HEAD is the work of one obsessively dedicated man, Takahide Hori, who has singularly created the sets, puppets, sound, music and special effects and then animated everything to bring this masterpiece to the big screen.
