Clannad (TV) Excellent
Clannad After Story (TV) Excellent
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Excellent Geass’s engrossing story and interesting characters come together to create a truly fantastic series that will hold your attention at gunpoint right up to the last second. Lelouch isn’t going to be everyone’s favourite character, but his almost villainous behaviour makes him that little bit more interesting. Code Geass’s biggest flaw—aside from the at times painful melodrama—is that it can’t stand on its own without season two.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Not really good Oh boy, what a mess. There are a lot of problems with R2, far too many for me to list out while keeping this review short. Essentially, the writers tried to do too much and wound up trying to fit a 50-episode series into half that time, with disastrous consequences. There are too many characters and too many story arcs competing for screen time and in the end they all get shafted. Such a waste.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece
Elemental Gelade (TV) Decent Elemental Gelade is about as average an anime can get while still being worth watching. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but should keep its audience entertained well-enough. There are certainly a lot worse things you could do with your time.
Eureka Seven (TV) Excellent
Fate/stay night (TV) Good
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (TV) Decent
Fate/Zero (TV) Excellent
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Good
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) Excellent
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) Good
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Excellent
Lucky Star (TV) Good This one is kind of hit-and-miss. When it wants to be, Lucky Star can be absolutely hilarious, but it often goes too long between jokes and on occasion it is pure, mindless drivel. It’s still plenty entertaining, though be warned: you will need at least a passing knowledge of mainstream anime—for lack of a better term—before you’ll understand a large chunk of the jokes. It’s probably best used as an emotional pick-me-up following a gritty and/or depressing series.
Macross Plus (OAV) Excellent
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (TV) Good Although it’s far from the worst series I’ve watched, 00 is also far from the best. The first season’s biggest problem is that it never really gives you a reason to emotionally invest in the characters. Its biggest strength is its main villain, who somehow manages to make his one-dimensional nature his scariest attribute. Between those two extremes are solid animation and a good story which culminates in a great Kill-Em-All-inspired finale. Solid.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season (TV) Decent Superior to Season 1 in some areas, inferior in others, 00 Season 2 is a very mixed bag. Characters have greater depth, the plot is wonderfully fast-paced and it again ends on a strong note. Unfortunately, the series falters around the midway mark and it feels as though the writers were making it up as they went towards the end. This leaves many characters and story arcs wasted. Oh, and the whole Backup Twin routine is just plain cheap.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer Not really good
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) Excellent Gundam SEED was the series that truly got me hooked on anime, and to this day it remains my favourite. Great characters, strong plotting and intense battles come together to create a truly fantastic series. SEED’s greatest flaw is the overuse of stock footage, which not even the wonderful animation bumps in the last few episodes can forgive. Regardless, it is a top-notch series and will never, ever fall off my favourites list.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (TV) Not really good Not even my great love of Gundam SEED could save this one. In fact, I think it made me hate it more. Despite a solid start and a couple of promising moments, GSD begins to fall apart around mid-season and collapses entirely towards the end. The fact that the finale lacks all suspense certainly doesn’t help. My advice is to finish SEED and stop there; it didn’t need a sequel anyway.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Final Plus: The Chosen Future (OAV) Decent The Chosen Future is an attempt to flesh out the rushed ending of the main series. There’s not really much that needs be said here; whether or not this is worth your time depends on whether or not you finished GSD. If you did, give The Chosen Future a watch. If you didn’t, don’t bother.
Mobile Suit Gundam UC (OAV) Excellent
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) Weak
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) Bad
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie) Decent
Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ (movie) Not really good
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Masterpiece
Romeo × Juliet (TV) Excellent Masterfully weaving an anime twist into the classic Shakespeare, Romeo x Juliet succeeds on almost every level. Strong leads, a believable romance and a great supporting cast are only a few of the strengths RxJ can boast about. Unfortunately, the series falters slightly around the middle and a major plot development appears without sufficient setup, keeping this series frustratingly short of Masterpiece status. An absolute must-watch.
Shakugan no Shana (TV) Good (dub), Very good (sub)
Shakugan no Shana (movie) Good
Shakugan no Shana III (Final) (TV) Weak Such. A. Waste. I must admit I had high hopes for this series, but even with lower expectations I can't say I would have enjoyed it. This series is overloaded with both characters and plot and doesn't have enough time for either, leading to a slew of plot developments that feel rushed or forced and often both. Characters are introduced with no regard as to if there is enough time to develop them, and one of the leads is so completely out of character as to defy recognition. The final nail in the coffin is the ending, which is one of the most unsatisfying Deus ex Machina endings I have ever seen.
Shakugan no Shana Second (TV) Good
Shakugan no Shana-tan (OAV) Good (dub), Very good (sub)
Shakugan no Shana-tan Returns (OAV) Excellent
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Weak The rating description “I wish I’d done something better with my time” sums up my feelings about this movie perfectly. An interesting premise and jaw-dropping aerial battles are left to drown in a plot that moves so slowly you could leave for fifteen minutes and not have missed anything important when you come back. In the end, you would be better served doing something more interesting with the two hours this movie will forever steal from you… like, say, washing dishes.
Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie (OAV) Not really good
Summer Wars (movie) Very good Although I absolutely love this movie and heartily recommend it, there are a few noticeable flaws which keep it away from true greatness. How much they hurt the movie will depend entirely on the viewer, but even with the problems it has Summer Wars is still sheer fun, easy to watch and follow and fully equipped with a fair bit of emotional clout. This is a movie that everyone should watch at least once, even if you end up not liking it.
Sword Art Online (TV) Good
Zoids (TV) Good Although Gundam SEED officially made me an Otaku, this was the first anime series I saw and thus holds a special place in my heart. That being said, just because it’s an old favourite doesn’t mean I can’t see that it’s no masterpiece. It is, however, good clean fun. The characters are likeable, the battles are fun and the story is solid enough. That’s all I want in a series.
Zoids/ZERO (TV) Decent Zoids/Zero is very much inferior to the original Zoids. The characters are even less fleshed-out, the plot (such as it is) is paper-thin and the battles more over-the-top. You’d think the series would crash and burn yet it still manages to work, mostly because it never takes itself too seriously and plays up the goofiness for good effect every now and then. Worth a look.
