Fiction Alchemist's Anime

take a look at Fiction Alchemist's Manga

FIRST: I will not include non-anime on my list (IE: not-anime-but-related). I enjoy western animation, but my ANN list is Japanese cartoons only.

SECOND: My comments, should I choose to write them, may contain minor spoilers. Nothing major, but you have been warned.

No. 3: This is the third strongest of the notes on this list!

FOURTH: I rate anime in any way I desire, depending on how well I liked it, and with little room for objectivity. I change the rating for any anime whenever I desire because my opinion shifts over time.

FIFTH: Fiction Alchemist is my only account.

Astro Boy (TV 3/2003) Bad Looks good most of the time. Pretty interesting when talking about robot sociology and dealing with prejudice against robots. The last six episodes are great, too. Finally handles Tenma well in animation. Unfortunately, many of the episodes are unimportant, irrelevant, and just plain boring. I'd much rather have had a more accurate manga adaptation.

Baccano! (TV) Very good
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts (TV) Worst ever Although funny at times early on (such as the random searching during the treasure hunt), it quickly begins a downward spiral from which it never recovers. It hits its low point in episode 9 when Akihisa's annoying sister is introduced. The "humor" is bafflingly juvenile and repetitive, especially with the worthless perverted camera character and the stupid jokes about (usually bouncing for no reason at all) breasts. Regardless of whether they are flat in the chest, all of the female characters are flat in personality. Other than thinking about the size of their boobs, their personalities consist of getting angry and entrapping (and usually hurting) males they have crushes on. Raging homophobia on display, but that's not surprising for a crappy school "comedy" anyway. The show attempts (and fails big time) to recover in the last three episodes,

Berserk (TV) Very good Might have gone higher, but there existed certain things I had reservations about. The writer is FAR too caught up in rape and I certainly would prefer to do without that (though it seems downplayed in the anime as compared to the manga). The genre shift was abrupt and unwelcome. The abrupt ending hurt due to a sequel never coming. Some things are made better by the manga (the continuation makes the sudden ending and genre shift better, more female characters are added), balanced by some things that are made worse by the manga (the fixation on sexual violence, and especially the unfortunate changes in one female character).

Blood-C (TV) Worst ever Saya is good at acting cute and killing monsters, but she is TOTAL CRAP at being a hero. She can talk about protecting all she wants to, but she'll let everyone die in front of her so the show can look "COOL AND VIOLENT". Early signs of pretentiousness with "covenant" nonsense. First five episodes are all basically the same thing. Afterward other flaws appear and it gets more pretentious. Characters not developed or defined. They're more cannon fodder than people. Emotions are stunted. It's hard to care about anything here because the writers/directors don't seem to care about anything but blood and guts. The violence in spotlight on stage is gratuitous and ugly to the point of being too hard to watch. Like the makers are guro fetishists. The nihilistic misanthropy is too much. Plot doesn't move anywhere unless "people dying" counts (it doesn't). It only spins the same boring hinting and foreshadowing. The stupid and vile ending episode was the perfect cap on crap mountain. When not accounting for length, this is the worst anime I've seen.

Clannad (movie) Not really good Do NOT watch this before Clannad and Clannad After Story. You'll regret it. This was interesting to see afterward for an alternate take on the story, but don't go out of your way for it.
Clannad (TV) Decent Gorgeous music, especially "Ana" by Lia. Makes me want to get a Clannad soundtrack. The show itself is odd. It follows a lot of clichés and is hit or miss with its comedy. It's very obvious Nagisa is the centerpiece gal, so it feels disjointed when focusing on Fuuko and Kotomi, but their arcs are still enjoyable, even if they feel a little long. Nagisa's arc I felt the least interested in (Nagisa is a doormat with little personality), though it's better after seeing After Story. Still good enough overall. Be sure to see the Tomoyo arc episode, as it's somehow the best episode of the first series.
Clannad After Story (TV) Good Minor spoiler alert here, okay? First 8 episodes are largely a waste. though the baseball episode is fun. It gets better afterward, but Nagisa is still a flat doormat of a character and drags this down until episodes 16-21, which are amazing. I felt let down by the "true ending" episode 22. There were many ways they could have gone (even if they had to deviate from the game). I don't want everything done in episodes 17-20 to be for nothing, as those were the best episodes in the series. If they were going to do things like that, then they would have been better off ending the show at episode 18 or 19. It doesn't change the show being among the most emotionally powerful anime I've seen in those episodes (though characters were prone to stupidity). Even with the unsatisfying ending in mind, I enjoyed what I got more than I do most things. Be sure to see the Kyou/Ryou arc episode. It's about as good as the Tomoyo arc episode, but obviously isn't a big standout here like it would have been if it were a part of the first series instead.

Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (TV) Weak Lacks about everything good the first DtB had. Coherence, for example. It's abandonment of the semi-episodic format was not a good move. It doesn't seem to care about anything and certainly doesn't care for what DtB had done before it. It does seem to think a lot of itself, though. The one redeeming feature this possesses is Suou and her relation to Hei. None of this matters in the end, because nothing in the whole show matters in the end. That ending was a bag of shit. Complain about the first DtB's ending if you want, but at least it wasn't the same bag of shit this one's ending was. I wasted my time watching.

Fate/stay night (TV) Weak I liked Fate/Zero, so I thought I might like this. I was mistaken. Fate/Zero gave no indication that it was a prequel to an eroge harem visual novel. The real knife in the spine is Shirou, an unlikable, smug, condescending, sexist, selfish, brainless, and over-controlling douche who is still allowed to constantly steal all of the glory and focus from characters he has no business out-powering (including Saber!). Predictably, right from the start, the warrior woman (and every other female character) is set to fall head over heels for the douche and be all blushy and defenseless around him. This could not be made up for even by the clever premise, which had potential and is the only high point. Any other positives were actually all entirely Fate/Zero's doing. The ending wasn't bad, though.
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (movie) Not really good Shirou is still the main character, but he's not nearly as annoying. Despite serious rushing issues, this was better paced than the series. Some characters get shafted and the servants and holy grail war are downplayed in importance. Perhaps that was the movie's doing because of a short running time.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (OAV) Worst ever I was skeptical behind the idea of a new Higurashi show. The original story is a favorite of mine, and I was aware this OAV was not an adaptation of any of the newer video game arcs from the later years. However, as I'm actually one of those somewhat odd fans of the Rei OAV, it was natural I'd want to see this. Tenth anniversary celebration? Not for Higurashi's fans. All the old fans get is insulted. In short, they sold Higurashi's integrity. In length: During the first episode, I don't think I've ever been as angry when watching anime. I gnashed my teeth and complained the entire time. This is unfunny, stupid, boring, and degrading trash serving only as lolicon moe fan-service. It doesn't resemble the source material at all. The characters are out of character constantly and there are no horror elements at all. The OP and ED are shocking views into the real motives of this OAV. The second episode was better, but that's like saying it's better to be urinated on than defecated on. Unfunny and cliche crap masquerading as one of my favorite shows. Fortunately, the third episode, while still boring and stupid, at least doesn't make one want to rip out their own throats. The only saving swing is the fourth episode, which is actually okay and better written, if a bit contradictory to the story of Higurashi anyway. It isn't enough to come close to prying this wretched excuse for an OAV from the dung heap.

Kanon (TV 1/2002) Weak In short: Watch the 24 episode KyoAni version from 2006 instead. In long: This 2002 Toei version is a mangled and inferior adaptation. Much of the story was edited out, executed poorly, or changed for the worse. Big loss of both drama and comedy. Ugly character designs (especially Yuuichi. UGH) and inferior animation to the KyoAni version. Characters less interesting than in the KyoAni version (especially, again, Yuuichi, who in the Toei version has a bland and generic personality). Bizarre pacing that puts most of the arc ends in a row. Worse music that doesn't even make good (or often ANY) use of the game songs. Things that are supposed to be dramatic or sad actually end up funny sometimes instead. If you choose to see this, do it as a curiosity only, and do NOT see it before the vastly superior 2006 KyoAni version of the story. You'll regret if you do.
Kanon (TV 2/2006) Masterpiece This is without a doubt the best of the anime based on Key visual novels. Perfect length, perfect characters, perfect pacing, satisfying ending, best humor, best theme, and best OP and ED. Clannad has the better music by a margin, but the late 90s PC music of Kanon is charming.

Macross 7 (TV) Bad Almost no resemblance to the first Macross show. Macross 7 goes with a "music is magic!" approach, with people having their "spiritia" sucked out and the POWER OF MUSIC being able to restore them. The first Macross kept this stuff all psychological with no magic. Unfortunately, Macross 7 also lacks the sense of importance and urgency the first Macross possessed. It is commonly boring due to many filler-like episodes. The villains have little character other than Gigil, and unlike the first Macross, the villains aren't intimidating at all (and some, like Gavil, are very annoying). There is an uncomfortable amount of pedophile-vision on Mylene. On the bright side, most of the hero characters are likable (Gamlin is my favorite), though they undergo little development. The show is repetitive and FAR too long for its own good. At 26 episodes, it probably would have been MUCH better. Fortunately, the songs are great. The series improves substantially around episode 42 or so as well. I think one would best skip this show and get the soundtrack (unless one is REALLY into mecha shows/wants to see all things Macross). Macross song rank: "My Soul for You" = #4
Macross 7 Encore (OAV) Bad Which One Do You Love?: Milia is such a terrible parent. She's also a dumb-ass. Worst episode of the lot by far. / On Stage: Not particularly good, but probably should have been in the regular show lineup. / Fleet of the Strongest Women: Best of the lot, easily, and almost enough to raise my score. Also a good chance to hear Mylene's "real" singing voice! Did they really have to (and so blatantly) panty-shot the poor flower girl, though?

Mahoraba ~Heartful days~ (TV) Awful Would be significantly better without its gimmick: Kozue's annoying "transformations". Cousin screwing fetish is another drawback for me. Male lead is another bland male protagonist with little discernible personality. Show tries way too hard to be cute (especially with Kozue and her umeboshi), but generally fails at it. Some characters are downright annoying. Best episodes don't directly revolve around either lead.

MÄR (TV) Awful Many of the characters have decent back-stories. Everything goes okay for a short while, but then crashes when the War Game begins. It's a fake shounen tournament and it sucks the life out of the show with nothing but sadly terrible fights. Before and after the War Game's end, the plot is bad, the filler is bad, the animation is bad, and the fan-service is pathetic. In the closing episodes (around episode 90), every event becomes an anticlimactic rushing hack-job. Most of the way through, this show is shounen at its most generic and uninspired. Near the end, it becomes worse than that.

Wish they wouldn't include cheesecake mass breast bouncing (actually more like wild thrashing. Seriously) during big fight scenes. It's pathetic. Nearly ever female pilot is only there to be cannon fodder (or does little of note in a fight while piloting a comically pink Gundam), but that's typical for Gundam from what I've seen. It's clear at this point that I am no TV Gundam fan.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (TV) Weak 9th Gundam seen. The new Lacus (NOT Meer) songs are great. Lacus herself is still great and the best. The show doesn't know what it wants to be most of the time. Trashes Cagalli's character for most of it, sadly (and somehow she's always "wrong" while grunting stupidly and wide-eyed). Shinn is an awful and annoying protagonist (but the series does an okay job of reacting to that amid its many knee-jerk plot shifts). Neo is a cheap knockoff and an unlikable and terrible person (and the show reacts badly to that). Meer comes across as excessively pandering to the worst (and she gets an episode pointlessly devoted to her near the end). Main villain is very easy to hate (even if his "master plan" comes out of nowhere and is guessed by a character toward the end). Ending is predictable and just sort of there.
Mobile Suit Gundam UC (OAV) Good 12th Gundam seen.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) Bad 8th Gundam seen.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie) Bad 11th Gundam seen. Any good that could have come from Amuro and Char's last encounter is spoiled by everything else. Char is just evil now with no real explanation for it. Mostly nothing happens over the course of two hours. Quess and Hathaway are the most annoying and obnoxious characters in Gundam history. The movie focuses on Quess far too much and she's a vile Mary Sue. Hathaway doesn't appear as much but is an awful turd when he does. A drag to sit through.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV) Good 6th Gundam seen.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV) So-so 3rd Gundam seen. I'd always heard this is the pinnacle of Gundam. If that's true, then I'm disappointed there's nowhere to go but down. I was glad to see this show had so many female pilots, but unfortunately they were prone to becoming "women in refrigerators". One female pilot was also prone to babbling about wanting to be "treated like a woman", or desiring to "live as a woman". One character also switches sides for no real reason (I know the real reason, so don't bother telling me). I was impressed the show is essentially constant mecha fights with no recaps, but I found myself at times wishing they would slow down and relax. The two mascot kids were annoying and unlikable. The last two episodes were very good.

My Bride is a Mermaid (TV) So-so Episodes 17 and 18 are terrible. I blame Shiranui.
My Little Monster (TV) Not really good First problem: I felt the show was going around in circles. "I love you, but you don't love me, but I'll wait for you to love me" to "I don't love you, but you love me, but you'll wait for me to love you". Infinity. Second BIG problem: I dislike Haru. I wanted Shizuku to dump him and go with the other guy, but then Haru would probably murder everyone.

No. 6 (TV) Decent I liked most of this series and appreciated the tasteful shounen-ai. The last episode is an utter disaster, though. I was unable to rate this for a while as a result. Still good enough, though I believe the ending is the most important part of a story.

Noir (TV) Awful A boring and pretentious wreck. I liked episodes 11 and 12, as Chloe is somewhat interesting, unlike the boring and unlikable leads. Episodes without Chloe are a chore. Terrible ending.
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Worst ever The most overrated anime I've seen. A large portion of my dislike has to do with the cold misogyny (tending to be directed at Sara), which I won't go into here because I don't want to overly fill the comment section. I also wasn't too impressed by about anything this did. This anime will be the point where my opinion is most likely to diverge from the opinion of others. I don't care.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion Decent Its sin is presuming to usurp the perfect ending the series had. It falls short of this (admittedly impossible) task. The series is better off without this movie in its canon. The movie somewhat contradicts the series in a plothole kind of way. Yet in its own right, this is a pretty good movie anyway. Slimy but satisfying. AMV match: "Dark Side of Me" or "2's My Favorite 1", both by Coheed and Cambria.
Push (movie) Decent
R.O.D -The TV- Good
RahXephon (TV) Decent
Ranma ½ (TV) Awful Has many problems: Offensive, stupid, overly long, and repetitive. These traits are most on display in the show's filler episodes, which make up 47% of the series. STILL sometimes funny, somehow. But of course, Takahashi's rampant sexism and cowardly clinging to status quo are enough to drag this through the dirt constantly after season 1, even without filler.

Running Man (movie) Bad
Rurouni Kenshin (TV) Not really good The actual manga material is great. However, it has 42 filler episodes (44% of the show) that are boring, stupid, or both (and 33 of them make up the latter portion of the series). It also does not adapt the manga's final arc. A shame.
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection (OAV) Decent
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Excellent
S-CRY-ed (TV) Not really good It grabs potentially good characters and starts stirring an eventual big conflict. Halfway through, it introduces an uninteresting villain and the story switches to, "He's evil and we have to stop him!" Some points would have been emotional if the characters had been better developed. I had trouble seeing Kazuma as the main character. It felt like Ryuhou had taken the spotlight in every episode of the second half.

Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Decent After eight years, I finally see this. It's a gorgeous series with a great moodiness to it I really like, and it has one of the best OPs I've ever seen or heard. Although it can be intriguing at times and the concept is good, it's also a pretentious cryptogram that makes almost no sense and is twice as long as it should be. The plot is almost non-existent until the last four episodes. Before then, the show wanders around doing things that amount to nothing (really slowly), starting subplots it never finishes, and building a world it isn't going to use. The characters are cold and usually unfeeling; the only emotions they seem to feel are loneliness and confusion (much like the viewer, I suppose). Somehow, Lain is a likable sort anyway, to the series' credit. All of the talk of existentialism and purpose is pretty interesting, as is the look on how computers and the way they separate us from "reality", but nothing that couldn't have been managed as well in a saner, shorter, and more sensible manner. It's ultimately a quirky fragment of its time, and I accept it as a classic. I liked it, though I wanted to like it more.

Shiki (TV) Bad The show was only any good at the start when the vampires were eating people. Then it became very bad. Needed another couple of episodes for the end. Also, Sunako is a whiny, spoiled, and annoying villain and I would hope the show wasn't expecting me to sympathize with her as if she were the hero/victim, but I think it was.

Strawberry Eggs (TV) Worst ever Acts like it has profound things to say about gender, but it reinforces smelly old stereotypes and sexist gender roles far more often than it dispels them. Generic and unfunny pedo-vision high-school claptrap with bad animation. Blatantly homophobic (and no, the series never fixes this, in case you want to try arguing that), citing homosexuality as "abnormal" and "twisted", but acts like (grown) men peeping on, stalking, and wanting to screw the teen girls is simply a pervy thing to do (the misogyny is amazingly not hidden that well). The landlady is the only entertaining character (they SO want you to believe Fuuko WHO EVERYONE LOVES is amazing and cute while they're jamming her down your throat, but she's merely a sucky Mary Sue, trust me). Shows like this are why some people have negative views on anime.
Strawberry Marshmallow (TV) Good
Strawberry Panic! (TV) Weak This becomes better starting with episode 18. Too bad it takes that long. I won't score something well when it's boring/stupid/annoying/offensive for 17 episodes. At least it has the guts to do REAL girl/girl romances instead of only teasing.

Trigun (TV) Masterpiece This is the show that got me into anime in the first place. It inspired me in my life and my writing. Without it, I don't know who I'd be today.
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (movie) Decent If you want to know why I rated it this much lower than the series: This movie lacks the Trigun magic. It lacks Trigun's heart. It's a fun watch anyway (and it looks good), but I'm still greatly hoping for a new series based 100% on the Trigun manga.
Trinity Blood (TV) Bad This show is a bad knock-off of Trigun. Even its title suggests this. I wouldn't mind this if the show was better. Also, Seth is a terrible Mary Sue.

Utawarerumono (TV) Weak Well, a lot of the female characters have the most common superpower. Sheesh. Anyway, the show was made up heavily of war episodes, and I'm not fond of war anime, but it was done okay. Shame the show feels so slow and disjointed, though. Strangely, this show also feels like multiple different types of shows smashed together. In the last four or so episodes, the show gets down-right bizarre with how different it has become from its more humble beginning.

Yakitate!! Japan (TV) Bad It's funny (though sometimes stupid and too reliant on terrible puns), educational (if sometimes ridiculous and science-fictional), and has a unique concept. However, it is still pretty basic shounen that refuses to take risks. For creativity, it doesn't do much outside of the overall concept, consisting almost entirely of bread-baking tournaments for sixty-nine episodes. Characters (minus the boring and personality-lacking main protagonist) seem like they could be interesting, but little is done with them. Kawachi is fairly interesting, but becomes a complete joke character in the final arc. The best character is ultimately Pierrot (who is surprisingly deep), but he's only around for the Monaco Cup (the best arc). The final arc is uninspired with a lackluster ending. Another problem is there is no intensity. It never makes you think Azuma could ever lose (except for the rare cases where you, the viewer, are the only one who will KNOW he will lose, and even then it will be a minor setback). Any major victories or losses are also swept away as only another event, not important at all. The show is also really predictable. As I mentioned earlier, it refuses to take risks, so it's obvious what the outcomes to the fights will be. Even worse, I found a pattern halfway through the show. If the second bread is tasted by the judge, it will always win with the exception of a rare draw. The first bread tasted only ever wins when the second bread isn't eaten at all. Oh, and hurray for KIDDO.
