Baccano! (TV) Excellent What a wild ride! This show bounces all over the place in a frenetic dance of violence and intrigue. The story is revealed piecemeal, with snatches of plot tossed out bit by bit throughout constant time line changes. If you can keep up with the crazy pace this anime is SO worth it.
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) Excellent Beck may be the best slice of life style anime I've seen to date. I loved how the pacing seemed languid, but not the least bit dull. The atmosphere is so well crafted that you can almost feel yourself inserted into the story along with Koyuki. Nothing is rushed and, though there are certaily some dramatic elements, they are so naturally presented as to feel like real time events. The music is also surprisingly good. The live shows were so realistic that I couldn't help flashing back to my club days. It'll make you want to go out and join a band.
Black Butler (TV) Very good
Black Butler II (TV) Good
Black Butler II (OAV)
Black Cat (TV) Not really good This was decent until the end, which really downgraded my opinion of the series. Earlier on, it was enjoyable enough, despite the total personality turn around of the main character and weird time jump in ep 8. That seemed like nothing more than laziness by the writers, who didn't feel like putting a modicum of thought into a workable transition. Still, I stuck with it til the end out of sheer spite. At around episode 16 or so I noticed a sudden drop in animation quality. Where they once at least bothered to animate mouths moving, they began to show stills with voice overlays, sometimes for an aggravating several seconds. That really stood out as being sloppy. The climax was sadly anti-climactic. They go from fighting a vicious battle to - "It's over now, all better!" without ever showing the actual end of the fight. It came across as disjointed and rushed. Can't say I'd recommend this one unless you've totally run out of shows to watch and are looking for something mind numbing to pass the time.

D.Gray-man (TV) Very good I loved D Gray Man. Not everyone will. For a shonen action show it fits the genre well. It doesn't ramble as much as Naruto or Bleach (having only 103 episodes) and has pretty good character interaction for the kind of show it is. I like how it blends humor and the details of daily life into the action so that you're not subjected to just one fight scene after another. That gets boring pretty quickly. The characters may be pretty generic, amounting to typical stereotypes, but they managed to be charming nonetheless. I found myself rooting for them.

Elfen Lied (TV) Decent I didn't think this one quite lived up to the hype. It is notable for it's over the top gore and sexuality, though I got so used to the nudity after a while that it ceased to register. The story was interesting enough, but nothing exceptional. Fans of moe would certainly love all the nubile young bodies, but that SO doesn't appeal to me at all. Worth watching once, but not a show I'd ever return to.

Kurenai (TV) Excellent I may feel like changing this rating later but right now, having just finished it, I'm feeling a bit let down. It's not that I thought the ending was bad, to the contrary, I liked the way it was resolved. It just seemed too short, as if this could have been much better as a 26 episode series. There was so much backstory that could have been delved into with these characters. I'm dissapointed not to have gotten to know them better.
Kurozuka (TV) Decent Interesting premise. The story started to drag a bit but I did like the dark atmosphere and the ending was enjoyable for it's twist. I'm a sucker for dark apocalyptic stories, but if you don't particularly like that kind of thing you probably won't find much of interest here. Even though it's in one of my favorite genres I'm glad it ended with only 12 episodes. Any longer and I would have dropped it.
Last Exile (TV) Very good
Living for the Day After Tomorrow (TV) Decent
Loveless (TV) Decent
Lovely Complex (TV) Very good
Lunar Legend Tsukihime (TV) Decent
Macross Frontier (TV) Decent When I was watching this I couldn't wait for the next episode. Looking back, I'm not sure why. The story, in typical Macross fashion, I guess, was founded on a concept that was hard for me to swallow. The animation was decent and I liked the characters, though they weren't particularly deep. The ending left me feeling a bit kind of let down. Something about it captured my attention though so I can't say it wasn't worth it.
Mardock Scramble: The First Compression (movie)
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Excellent
Mermaid Forest (TV) So-so
Midori Days (TV) Decent
Mononoke (TV) Masterpiece I tend to be pretty stingy with my "masterpiece" rating but I'd give it up to Mononoke on the basis of beauty alone, though the stories are pretty terrific too. This show is visually dazzling and very clever with it's use of traditional Kabuki theater techniques. The stories are all very suspenseful and manage to be creepier than most horrors out there without ever needing to resort to common gore. The music is fantastic as well.
Monster (TV) Excellent Monster is one of the best psychological mysteries that I've ever seen, anime or live action. The length of this series requires some commitment, but it's well worth it. If you're any kind of anime fan, this is one you should at least check out.
MoonPhase (TV) So-so
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) Very good
Mushi-Shi (TV) Excellent
NANA (TV) Very good This soap opera style story may not fit everyone's idea of excellent but it totally delivers for it's intended genre. Heartbreak, angst, and passion, love triangles galore and characters so beautiful and cool that it's a damn shame they could never really exist are what it's all about in Nana. I'd say this is my favorite guilty pleasure, but it's so freakin good that I don't feel the least bit guilty.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous (TV)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV)
Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective (TV) Decent
Nodame Cantabile (TV) Very good
Otogi Zoshi (TV) Good The first season of this show set in 972 A.D was really very good. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The second season took place in the present with the characters reincarnations, an interesting concept that didn't play out as well as it could have. It was like watching a totally separate show, but not one I'd rate very high. I'd recommend watching the first season and maybe passing on the second.
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Very good For some reason I'm not drawn to many comedies, something I should probably change. Ouran High School Host Club is one that I really enjoyed. Unlike more ambitious animes out there, it never aspires to be anything other than a lighthearted good time. Remaining faithful to its tongue and cheek premise till the end, it skewers shoujo conventions without resorting to being snide. Lots of folks seem disappointed by the ending but I thought it resolved rather nicely. After watching hundreds of hours of anime, I’ve become accustomed to the seemingly common anime convention of denying the audience closure. That being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing another season of this one.

Planetes (TV) Excellent This series was shockingly good. It took me a while to get around to it because the premise just didn't grab me, but I'm so glad that I did now. At first, the series concentrates on character development, building up later on to a serious web of political intrigue and some rather impressive action sequences. The main characters here have no super powers. They haven't woken up to find they are prophesied magical beings. They are everyday grunts in a giant cog of a corporation, who find that they are caught in the middle of conflicts caused by higher ups that are completely beyond their control. Sounds realistic, huh? There is a very "real" feel to this show. The true jewels in the crown of this show are the underlying philosophical themes as each character struggles to find meaning in his or her life. They manage to explore this with maturity and complexity, not relying on the tired platitudes we usually see. I've had some of those very same conversations with myself. The animation is top notch. I especially like that they don't make the classic misstep of giving sound to events happening in the vacuum of outer space. Sci-fi shows always do this and it drives me nuts. Besides, its far more powerful to portray the space scenes as graceful and silent. Planetes is a rare find that truly has it all, drama, humor, suspense, romance, tragedy, despair, heroism (the real kind), and finally optimism. Watch it! Now!

Psychic Detective Yakumo (TV) So-so
Rave Master (TV) So-so
Red Garden (TV) Good When I first started watching this (on the recommendation of a friend) I thought, "what is this abysmal swill." There were these weird musical segments where the characters, who were normally played as straight up drama types, would suddenly burst into song. I can't adequately describe how disturbing this was. It was really oddly out of place. Eventually, they simply dropped this transgression with no word of explanation, as if we should just pretend it never happened. Fair enough. Perhaps it's better that way. Anyway, the series did get considerably better and proved entertaining enough for me to want to see the OVA, though I couldn't find it in English.
Rumbling Hearts (TV) Decent
Rurouni Kenshin (TV 1996) Good Fans of Trust and Betrayal will not find it's television counterpart in this series. It's a good enough shounen type action show, and certainly isn't offensive in any way, but it's nowhere near the quality of the movie. So watch it on it's own merit but try not to go into it with overly high expectations.
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection (OAV) Good
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Masterpiece Just...God Damned Brilliant! That's all I can say.
S.A (TV) Good This is not a deep show but it was fun for an escape.

Saiyuki (TV) Good
Saiyuki Reload: Burial (OAV) Good

Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent
Samurai Deeper Kyo (TV) Decent
Speed Grapher (TV) Very good Speed Grapher is a terrific show for grown ups who don't need every turn of the plot to be driven into our heads with a mallet. The writers allow you to ponder and appreciate the complexity of the characters, who are mostly broken and warped by either cruelty or greed. There is a world of sex and violence here so be forewarned. The sexual content isn't intended to be titilating, but serves more as a backdrop for the human potential for depravity, and it gets seriously depraved. Somehow, despite the shock value, or maybe because of it, the driving issue of humanity's ability to be truly monsterous when given free reign makes it through very clearly.

Sword of the Stranger (movie) Very good In the spirit of all the classic stories of a brooding samurai master taking a young apprentice under his wing. Good guys v/s bad guys, male bonding, epic sword fights, etc... This movie is very satisfying, easy to digest.
Texhnolyze (TV) Good
Trinity Blood (TV) Good
True Tears (TV) Weak This show might not suck, but it was so utterly forgettable that I can't remember if it did or not.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie) Good
Vampire Knight (TV) Very good The character designs were great for this show. It's very pretty and sultry with it's sexy vampires. If a second season comes out I'd watch that religiously as well. I can't rate it much higher than "good" or maybe "very good" because it just isn't excellent material. For what it is, a romantic shoujo series, it's terrific. There are lots of bishies, drama and angst. However, in 13 short episodes you just don't have time to get the feel of the story, which IS a good one. I'd hope people who liked this series would check out the manga, where they really can enjoy the characters with some degree of depth.
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Good
(The) Wallflower (TV) Good
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Excellent Wow, this one hit a little close to home. You may see your own reflection in this show, but hopefully only to a small degree. For many anime fans this will be akin to poking fun at themselves, but it is certainly an insightful (and kind) portrayal of a classic Hikikomori. This is a story of broken people struggling to connect to other damaged people. Maybe it's because the characters are far from perfect that it draws you in and makes you care.
Wolf's Rain (TV) Decent
Zombie-Loan (TV) Decent
