5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) Decent It was beautiful, and strongly filled with emotion. It was also boring as shit and nothing happened except for a bunch of relatively flat (or at least mild) characters looking sad.
Aeon Flux (U.S. TV) Very good
Ajin (TV) Good Fun, and fairly clever combat. At first the 3d bothered me, but I got over it quickly. It was a bit too purely dark and edgy for my tastes, but I did appreciate the interesting take on the protagonist being a clever sociopath. It suffers greatly on three major points: (1) the portrayal of everyone as selfish assholes comes off as a bit unbelievable (2) the fact that it does not even try to have a season ending, leaving things kinda hanging, and (3) there isn't a good character to root for, so you kinda end up not giving a shit about anyone.
Akira (movie) Weak It hasn't aged all that well. Very slow, very meh.
Aldnoah.Zero (TV) Very good
Alien Nine (special) Decent
Allison & Lillia (TV) Decent Watched it all, but it was barely interesting enough the whole time to keep going. It had too many cheap storytelling tricks, deus ex machina, and was just incredibly predictable beginning to end. Additionally, there ware too many moments when my sense of disbelief was broken by something over the top, or some "coincidence" happening yet again just because the story demanded it. On the other hand, the characters were pretty compelling, and it had a LOT of touching momentsin spite of it all.
Amagi Brilliant Park (TV) Decent Pretty anime with a neat silly premise, centered around the themes of management. Fairly forgettable though. Sylphy best girl.
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Excellent

Appleseed: Ex Machina (movie) Weak
Attack on Titan (TV) Good
Baby Blue (movie) Weak
Baccano! (TV) Masterpiece The premise (Alchemists, 1920's gangsters, immortality, and more) is great, but the execution is done bravely and flawlessly. Plots occur in 4 different time periods and like 20 characters at the same time, and somehow fit togeather perfectly, and with so much pizazz, it is hard to see how this can be surpassed.

Black Rock Shooter (TV) Weak
Blood Blockade Battlefront (TV) Good Fantastically creative art, incredible world building, and a solid dub, The characters are a little weak, but not terrible. The themes were interesting, but a bit too scattered, and they missed a lot of potential that they could have achieved if they really focused on them better: the the problems and growth created by culture mixing or the imperfection of all things would have been great if they gave them the time they deserved. Unfortunately they flubbed the ending; they tried to make it more serious at the end, but had to suddenly jam in a bunch of character development that felt out of character and forced for the show.
Blue Drop (TV) Good
Blue Exorcist (TV) Excellent
(The) Boy and The Beast (movie) Good
C – Control – The Money and Soul of Possibility (TV) Excellent It was a bit random and overly artsy, but the message was interesting, thought provoking, and very relevant to the modern day.

Ergo Proxy (TV) Decent This totally seemed like the kind of thing I would like... the theme and art were heartbreaking, thoughtful, innovative, and beautiful... somehow, though, if utterly failed to deliver... the plot just sort of... stopped... right near the beginning, and it became utterly fragmented and psychological, with answers coming once every way-to-many episodes and the rest just basically filler. As for characters; they were incredibly designed, and poorly executed, and then just killed haphazardly toward the end. Conclusion: could have been the best ever, but it was simply a disappointing "meh".
Escaflowne: The Movie Awful
Eureka Seven (TV) Excellent
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) Weak At least the art was kinda nice and the pacing wasn't awful.
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) Not really good Wow I almost felt something like entertainment at times. A true highpoint of the series.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (movie) Awful AAaaaaand back to retarded jerking off to symbolism. Fuck.
Excel Saga (TV) Good
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya (TV) Not really good
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (US CG movie) Bad
First Squad - The Moment Of Truth (OAV) Excellent This was a very very strange anime, but the uniqueness and bravery of the producers to do something like this shone through, and while there was some very canned dialog at times, the overall effect was powerful, thematic, and emotionally compelling.
FLCL (OAV) Very good
Flip Flappers (TV) Excellent
Flying Witch (TV) Very good
From the New World (TV) Masterpiece
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Good
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Excellent I mean, its obviously going to have an amazing plot/characters/themes; the source material is a timeless classic for very good reasons. It does show age in its views towards gender roles, but it only occasionally grated me. I also was annoyed by pacing at times, with it either going too slow, or glossing over parts that could have been more detailed, but it filled out its 2 cour timeslot better then I was expecting. What I wasn't expecting was the visuals. Wow. I had seen some before, and they are grating for a little bit, until you get used to not focusing on the clothing patterns (it messes really hard with the sense of motion when characters move while the patterns stay still). But after a while, I grew to love it, and I think the experiment payed off. The style allowed the setting to flourish, with beautiful patterned walls, stylish outfits, and expressive scenery in general. Every frame is beautiful. The weak point was the whole... sci-fi thing. I don't get why it was needed. "Its an anime, so its gotta have mechs" or something? The whole plot and setting make perfect sense if it is set in the past in France; if I think about it as in the future, tons of questions come up about why certain technologies don't exist, why medical science is so bad, how the world came to be, etc. At the same time, it adds absolutely nothing that just a slightly abstract or "artistic license" setting wouldn't accomplish better. Its not enough to break it for me because I can just pretend its the original setting, but I could see it being aggravating for newcomers to this story.
(The) Garden of Sinners (movie series) Masterpiece This might be the first 10 I give to a series with a somewhat poor ending, but I can do nothing else. This is a beautiful masterpiece with perfect composition. Possibly the longest true "art anime" I have ever seen.

(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Masterpiece
Girlish Number (TV) Very good For someone with a dark and cynical soul, this anime truly spoke to me. Whether it was ego filled characters engaging in bold unsubstantiated boasting or cute girls casually slinging the harshest insults, I was constantly entertained and frequently laughing. Who knew that all it took to make a drama/comedy I enjoyed was to make everyone irredeemable assholes? Unfortunately, instead of doubling down, the ending had to try and be "optimistic and uplifting" or some shit, which really spoiled some of the fun, but my overall impression was still rather positive.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Decent
Guin Saga (TV) Bad
Gurren Lagann (TV) Masterpiece
Haibane Renmei (TV) Excellent
Hanamonogatari (TV) Not really good I really hated the girl of this arc, it was drawn out, I wasn't fond of the themes, and it all just fit together much more jankey then the rest of this show. The only good and memorable episode was ep 2, which had nothing to do with the main plot and was just good cause Kaiki.
Happy Machine (movie) Decent
Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto (TV) Good
Hellsing (TV) So-so
Hellsing Ultimate (OAV) So-so
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Excellent
Humanity Has Declined (TV) Masterpiece
I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying (TV) Masterpiece It breaks every norm of romance anime by having marriage and (off-screen) sex in the first episode. It then proceeds to fully flesh out a diverse cast of flawed and human characters and addressing difficult and unique topics, while providing high quality humor, tons of cute moments, and progressing a central story. Did I mention all the episodes are just 3 min long?
I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying: 2nd Thread (TV 2) Excellent
Inferno Cop (ONA) Not really good I mean, they got the bang for their buck in terms of quality, but it's by being super cheap.

Little Witch Academia (movie) Good
Log Horizon (TV) Very good This was 9, pushing 10 for most of the series. The characters felt real, the setting was compelling, and I was giddy watching all the various plot lines unfold. Then for some retarded reason they made the last arc a fucking festival where nothing happened with some random exposition about some new villain at the end. It didn't entirely ruin the show or anything (since I know there is more) but it did put a damper on the whole thing.
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! (TV) Not really good Meh. It is surprising what a dub and good pacing will allow me to watch. It really suffers from all the pandering bullshit genera trappings of a harem anime. It had a chance to be good, early on, but it took too long to get there. The resolution was obvious by the halfway mark, and it just crawled the rest of the way.
Lovely Complex (TV) Excellent
Madlax (TV) So-so I rewatched it 9 years later, this having been one of the earlier anime I saw, and... it doesn't hold up. However, I can see what the earlier me saw in it... it is a beautiful tone piece, with strong themes of escapism and disassociation, both of which continue to be relevant to me on a personal level to this day. That said, most of the other elements are poor, and the way it draaaaaaaags out is painful. The content, ideas, and overall feel would do well as maybe short movie or something. It feels like a music video dragged out over a 2 cour series. I get that it helps establish that tone, but the extent of it is just offensive.

Mushi-Shi (TV) Masterpiece
My Hero Academia (TV) So-so Below average for a shonen, and painfully unfinished, though I found myself not caring where it goes from here anyways. Only thing that got me through the whole thing was Bones visual coolness. Maybe if there weren't a million hero universes already out there I might care, but this one is particularly uninspired. Compare for example to Worm; this doesn't hold up even slightly.
My Little Monster (TV) Excellent Exceptional for a shojo style romance for its fast pace, believable characters, and drama based on real internal and external conflicts that arise related to romance (and friendship). It also had a lot of dramatic twists, which had me "fufufu"ing out loud in glee. The thing that made this resonate so strongly though was the main character dynamic, which reflected powerfully some of my past experiences. I am a bit spacey and lazy, I try to be earnest and open, and academics always came fairly easily without much studying. I have had more then one ex girlfriend that was the hardworking, hyper organized, straight A student. The male/female dynamic explored in this show, and its various idiosyncrasies, felt very meaningful to me personally.
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Good A very high quality children's movie, but not really meant at all for any audience above 8.
NANA (TV) Excellent
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Very good
Nekomonogatari (Black) (TV) Very good
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Awful
Nisemonogatari (TV) Very good It kinda goes all over the place with plot and characters, and calling the fanservice "a bit heavy" would be understating it. Still, even as possibly the worst chapter of the Monogatari franchise, it is pretty damn solid.
Noein - to your other self (TV) Masterpiece
Noir (TV) Decent
Noragami (TV) Very good
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Masterpiece The saddest Anime ever, yet somehow, the protagonist remains so incredibly optimistic, it makes for one of the most good and continuously heartbreaking stories ever told. Also... cure for emos.

ReLIFE (TV) So-so There were some clever jokes and dramatic writing, enough to keep me going. My favorite character was autistic girl. There were some weaknesses in animation at times that bothered me. The whole premise of creeping on other peoples business was... creepy, and it made a lot of the emotional beats fall flat for me. Finally, the writing had a strange habit of... repeating obvious emotional information, like it thinks the audience is a little bit autistic itself, and feels a bit patronizing tbh. Passable ending, though I am a bit annoyed how basically nothing was explained or resolved.
RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne (TV) Not really good
Romeo × Juliet (TV) Very good
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Good
Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent
School-Live! (TV) Excellent I mean, I get bored in all the moe-slice-of-life content, but the hardcore tension of the setting more then makes up for it.
Scrapped Princess (TV) Excellent
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Excellent
(The) Seven Deadly Sins (TV) Very good Top tier for a shounen anime. There was a surprisingly dense political, plot, and personal narrative that was revealed naturally and with good pacing. The world was a bit on the generic fantasy side, but with enough careful details to make it feel somewhat unique. Most major story beats were very predictable, and the unclear and variable power levels and effective immortality of all the characters made the stakes a bit lower in most of the fights. The ending wasn't ideal (a LOT of plot threads left dangling) but it was a real ending, so I guess its fine. Overall, simple with pretty good execution, and near the higher end of what I was expecting to get out of it.
Shanghai Dragon (movie) Good
Shiki (TV) Very good One of the better haunting/horror/dark anime I have seen. It has a thrilling plot, and surprisingly solid characters. It sticks with you in that way that disturbing things sometimes can. The major flaws I found were: - It took a while to get to the meat of it. The first half isn't bad, but it isn't particularly excellent, and many of the characters weren't as important to the main plot threads as their nameplates made out. They were just introduced to murder them to prove the series was dark and I guess fill time between important plot or character developments. - "No time to explain" syndrome. There were plenty of moments when a bit more communication and evidence providing would have helped, and characters just kinda preemptively gave up for plot convenience, because if everyone got what was going on earlier, the plot would die.
Shirobako (TV) Excellent A pretty decent story with good characters and powerful, optimistic moments, even without the industry angle. A 100% must watch for anyone interested in anime production, even if it is a bit too... idealized.
Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū (TV) Excellent
Silver Spoon (TV) Good It is a slice of life (not my thing) about farming (even more boring), yet the humor, pacing, and characters were strong enough that I finished it and want to watch the second season. Thats basically the highest praise.
Silver Spoon (TV 2) Good
Simoun (TV) Good
Skip Beat! (TV) Excellent
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Not really good
Soul Eater Not! (TV) Bad
Space Patrol Luluco (TV) Excellent

Spirited Away (movie) Excellent
Steamboy (movie) Very good
Steins;Gate (TV) Masterpiece
Summer Wars (movie) Masterpiece
Sword of the Stranger (movie) Good
Tekkonkinkreet (movie) Very good
Terror in Resonance (TV) Weak It was a bit too slow, and not only did they always pick some obvious cliche to go with, but most of the time, they picked the worse option. The ending had some feels, but it was painful to get that far. Also, token girl was utterly useless, but the whole story felt a bit... weak. Its a shame, the message and themes they were going for were really interesting, and had some good potential. Maybe just a movie about the cop himself or something would have allowed the same plot to work better.
Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono (TV) Decent Its very creative to make a show that is just improv, and it really highlights the difference between scripted and unscripted dialog. Also, the structure makes for good comedic moments, and it wasn't too long. However, its clear that it does not hold up to something like Who's Line is it Anyways, because the actresses aren't quite as clever or quick on their feet, and so it falls flat fairly often. Also, the medium of anime does not add much, at least not in this form, though the simple pictures of the ideas in the early episodes helped the format quite a bit.
Time of Eve (ONA) Masterpiece
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (TV) Very good The first half is a bit weak plot wise. Basically, they are just trying to survive, and Mari is somehow the only decent human being, with everyone else being total selfish assholes. The kids constantly do retarded things just to add tension. The second half is "Feels: The Anime". Its fairly well done, with a lot more empathetic moments, though it feels a bit like cheap shots sometimes, and stretches out a bit too much. I don't think the disaster genera is right for me, but it still does a good job on the emotional side. Overall, a good show with a few smaller flaws. Oh, and Kusakabe Mari is my waifu as of the time of this writing.
Tonkatsu DJ Agetarō (TV) Decent Only in anime...
Toradora! (TV) Good Well, it did better then most high school romance shows, which is saying something. The ending wasn't something that appealed to me exactly, and felt forced and rushed, but overall, the show had good pacing in plot and character development. Really, I was surprised it never felt like it stalled out too badly for most the middle section, as I was expecting.
Toward the Terra (TV) Masterpiece
Trigun (TV) Good
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (movie) Decent
True Tears (TV) Weak
Tsukimonogatari (TV) Good
Tweeny Witches (TV) Good
Un-Go (TV) Very good
Unlimited Psychic Squad (TV) Good Its mysterious cool. Like, the entire point is to take itself totally seriously and have cool mysterious psychic characters do cool moves in cool fights for mysterious reasons. It doesn't really surprise, its pure cliche, and the characters are mostly melodrama props, and it has a pretty standard theme and structure. So yeah, it has holes, but it does what it sets out to do with flourish.
Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan (movie) Bad Lets see... lets take a B-rated action movie, dumb down the plot, give it great visuals... and then strip the action. Seriously, the action scenes are like a total of 10 min and utterly stupid, the characters are utterly flat, and the story is utterly uninspiring.
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Excellent
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Not really good
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Decent
When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace (TV) Good List of deconstructions off the top of my head: - Superpower show where the superpowers are meaningless, and are obviously an extraneous plot element at all times. - Background of magic and secret wars and whatnot are explained, but basically nothing comes of it and it stays in the background of what is fundamentally a normal harem/romance/comedy. - Protagonist is a guy who retardedly acts like a cliche protagonist and is made fun of for it. - Protagonist - Character literally referring to himself as the reader, who tries to mess with the group dynamic by coaching one of the girls on "how to win the hearts of the readers and be best girl". - Reader character also works to ensure a magic battle ending "so it wouldn't be boring" by contracting a random person from the magic sideplot characters. - Random dating sequence at the start with who confesses her love and hints at yandere, but then acts reasonably when it is explained it wasn't requited and backs off for good. Plus, like, trigger is just great. Tons of details, tons of references to their previous works, all fun, Under the hood it is just a cheesy wish fulfillment harem story, and I almost dropped it a few times, because that core engagement was lacking for me. But still, TRIGGER seems to have mastered this strange art of both embracing the genera, while at the same time commenting on it and deconstructing it. Its just... disgustingly clever, but I can't help but be amused by it every time nonetheless.
