| Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil (TV) | Weak | I can't figure out what it is exactly (jawline? eyes?), but the faces (mostly the female ones) look just a little weird. This anime is also heavy on the CGI, which makes the characters and the few things that are hand-drawn kinda stand out. So far it looks interesting, although it's obvious they'll have to focus more on the magic stuff than on the lawyer business to make for a fun story. Ah, I see. The weird faces and the ecchiness are both explained by the director being the same guy who directed Kite and Mezzo. Let's hope the story at least stays okay. Wow, eps.7 and 8 are really stretching believability too thin. And another wow, ep.11's animation is super bad. Several scenes are nearly all stills, and a few others have really bad art. I suppose they have fixed that for the BD version, but I don't feel like downloading that for just two eps. Hmm, the last ep. is also not quite up to par art- and animationwise. In the end the plot is sort of resolved in an unsatisfying way, and a whole bunch of details are hinted to be resolved, but left just vague enough to serve as sequel hooks. This anime had some potential, but it got buried trying to include everything and the kitchen sink, with bad plotting as well. |
| Wolf Children (movie) | Very good | A nice feelgood movie. It's actually almost two hours long, but it feels shorter. The setting is very Ghibli Hills (after the beginning at least). The credits said "English reversioning", so now I'm worried I missed some Japanese details. The subtitles didn't match in some places at least. |

| xxxHOLiC (TV) | Good | Kinda fun, but there wasn't much character development in the series. The art style is quite unique among anime. It reminded me a little of some old Max Fleischer cartoons, especially the exaggerated long limbs and wild gestures while face-faulting. Like I said though, the stories (episodes are mostly stand-alone) are interesting, but there's very little in the way of character development. We never learn any background on anyone besides Watanuki, and their relationships at the end of the series is pretty much the same as it was at episode 2 or so. There's a second season now, but I'm not sure I care to watch it right away. |
| Yamibo - Darkness, the Hat, and the Travelers of the Books (TV) | Not really good | Hmm. Why wasn't this on the to-watch list yet? I know the ending will be sad, but it's still yuri. Hmm, the first ep. is kinda confusing, introducing so many characters without much explanation. And yet more are introduced in ep.2 (which btw is very icky with three instances of sexual assault; I hope this isn't what the rest of the anime is like). This anime is in very anachronic order, which makes it hard to figure out what's going on. Many characters having similar faces doesn't help to keep things clear either. Well, the ending was indeed sad (and two eps. long), but the whole story was so weird and convoluted that it's like meh, whatever. |
| Yes! Precure 5 (TV) | Good | Arienai quit subbing after 20 eps. Eggplant did 21 to 24. And then finally PCSS subbed the rest of the series. And now I'm watching a PreCure anime again after a very long time ^_^ Is it me, or does the plot toss more idiot balls around this season? The merchandise placement is also pretty blatant. We haven't seen the Cures use any of their old attacks since even before they got those silly trinkets. And finished. This PreCure series was my least liked so far. Having five main characters means they're crowding each other out of the spotlight. Each of them gets rather limited development compared to the earlier series. Five transformations or attacks also means less time per episode for the story. The character I liked least was definitely Milk. She's as annoyingly voiced as Coco and Nuts, but is an unnecessary addition to the cast and is basically a walking talking idiot ball as her antics get the group into trouble many many times. |
| Yes! Precure 5 GoGo! (TV) | Decent | Yay, back to PreCure! ^_^ The first ep.'s animation quality is remarkable. And of course a new McGuffin and new transformation trinkets. And a new mascot. The OP/eyecatch/ED show also a new team member. This anime is getting crowded. Scorp's voice is Neuro from Nougami Tantei Neuro, which makes him sound sophisticated and a worthy opponent. I wonder if he'll be the leader of the bad guys or just the first minion. Probably the latter, considering that he's already shown in action here. Pity, he'd have subverted the tradition nicely. Hmm, is it me, or is this season a little heavy on the toy promotion and melodrama? And then there's Milk again. I wish they'd written her out of the anime after last season. This really is the worst season so far. They just had some comedian guest-star in ep.17 just to get some passing ratings. This may be the worst PreCure season so far, but Anacondy is the coolest villain. Okay, maybe after Kaoru&Michiru from Splash☆Star, but definitely in the top 2. And finished. Even the end was so-so. Spectacular, as expected, but not completely satisfying. Also Anacondy didn't come back. Hopefully Fresh Precure will be better than Precure 5. |
| Yes! Precure 5 GoGo! Okashi no Kuni no Happy Birthday (movie) | Not really good | Did they have these toys for the movie in seasons before PreCure 5 too? I'm not sure. The art is sometimes a little so-so, but the animation is mostly pretty good. No secondary powerups yet; I guess they'll save those for the final fight of the movie. Oh? Dream gets a new transformation even. Is that a preview of the season's final powerup? Pretty meh though that it's just Dream again. The rest stayed off-screen during that fight. As expected of such a movie, the plot is very flimsy, and the acting even more melodramatic than in the series. Very heavy toy advertising too. |
| Yes! Precure 5: Kagami no Kuni no Miracle Daibōken! (movie) | Decent | And here we have even more blatant product placement, with a trinket especially for the movie. With audience participation during the final battle. *rolleyes* Ah well. The Dark Cures were interesting. They reminded me of Michiru and Kaoru from Pretty Cure Splash☆Star. They didn't last very long though. The problem with PreCure 5 is that there are too many characters to have all of them get their proper screen time/story. |

| Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (OAV) | Very good | Said to be a lot like Aria, so it must be pretty awesome :) As expected, it is indeed very relaxing and quiet and pretty. It's a little more melancholy than Aria though, especially the first OVA. Just watched the DVDs again. I don't recall the male gaze being this noticeable. It's not fanservice bad, but the camera definitely finds every occasion to pan over Alpha's body. |

| Yozakura Quartet (TV) | Very good | Oh, this anime has a very interesting setting. A town full of youkai. Not sure why they call the main characters a quartet though, as there are now six of them it seems. Kotoha's fascination with WW2-era German weaponry is a bit freaky, but otherwise her kotodama power is very cool. Overall, this anime was very much worth seeing. There's a surprising lot of action, and although it could've been better, the character depth isn't bad either. I wish this series was longer and showed more of the town's daily life. Rewatching this after watching the second TV series and OVAs. This series is really different in a lot of details. The character designs are all slightly off, the backstory of the sakura trees is different, Hime being a dragon and Enjin being the enemy are both known from the start. And the overall plot is quite different as well. The only things this version has going for it are that there's no ecchi stuff (Yuuhi ogling some women from a distance is the worst it gets; no pantyshots, no groping), and that the story has an ending. | Yozakura Quartet ~Hana no Uta~ (TV) | Good | Well, I think I've figured out how it goes. The first TV series covered up to the end of the Ibara Michi arc (or technically the Dogwood arc too), but in order to make a rounded story, added some details that in the manga weren't revealed until the end of that arc to earlier eps., plus changed the ending. So it's not exactly faithful to the original story. The second TV series follows the manga faithfully, but tries to cover the actionful Ibara Michi and Hana No Uta arcs both in detail (4 eps. each), leaving only 5 eps. for the introduction and connecting details. As a result it goes through the introduction so quickly and leaves out so many minor details that it'd be super hard to understand if you haven't already read the manga (or watched the first TV series, which had 8 eps. to cover the same ground). Plus, the second TV series outright obliges you to watch the Hoshi No Umi OVA in between eps.8 and 9 because it skips over that arc completely, but refers to it afterwards. The Tsuki Ni Naku OVA is an arc that takes place after all that's covered by the second TV series, and seems to be fairly stand-alone, so it can safely be watched last. This series is a lot more ecchi than I remember the first one being. Pantyshots everywhere, plus a lot of casual groping. Ah, the Hana No Uta arc wasn't completely action-packed, there was also a lot of talking. It's a bit similar to the Hoshi No Umi OVA in that it mainly shows one of the demon hunters joining the town, although this has also more side stuff. The main conflict remains unresolved of course, as expected with the manga still going. All in all, aside from the first 7 eps. or so covering the same things the first TV series had 12 eps. for and as a result being super rushed, this was a pretty good anime. Would get a higher rating if they'd toned down the ecchi stuff. See comments on the manga for more info on how the various anime relate to eachother and the manga. |
| Yozakura Quartet ~Hoshi no Umi~ (OAV) | Very good | See overview for the Hana No Uta series. This OVA goes between eps.8 and 9. I think that early scene with Akina and Juri holding hands was referenced earlier in the TV series. And at the same time this OVA seems to assume you've watched the first TV series before (or read the manga), because Rin gets very little introduction. On one hand this OVA fits into the manga/second TV series story, but on the other hand the art is not quite as good, like the first TV series. Ah well, it's a nice story which stands on its own fairly well, even if it is part of a larger storyline. |
| Yozakura Quartet ~Tsuki ni Naku~ (OAV) | Good | Another story of one of Enjin's helpers attacking and eventually joining the town. This one's also a lower deck story; Hime and the regular gang are on vacation, so it's Shidou, Mina&Kana, Juri&Lila, and the police. Fairly stand-alone, like the Hoshi No Umi arc. I guess that's why they made these two into OVAs first. It's a decent story, although the villain here doesn't get much depth. The art/animation is also a bit meh. And of course there's still the pantyshots and groping. Now I wonder if the first TV series was that bad and I just forgot about it. |
| Yuki Yuna Is a Hero (TV) | So-so | Magical girls, one of whom is disabled. Sounds interesting :) But I'm also a bit worried how they'll treat Tougou. Hope it's not a magical cure thing. I mean, of course that'd be nice for Tougou herself, but it's also not realistic, plus it avoids the being disabled issue. This looks like a post-Madoka magical girl anime. Hope they don't overdo the dark&edgy thing :/ So far it does have the empty-feeling world. Tougou got to transform as well, so that's nice (with the being disabled thing sidestepped by giving her artifical legs and making her a sniper). Ep.3 suddenly introduces a new character. Loud and a bit abrasive. I was wondering if Fuu or Itsuki would be sacrificed to get serious, but it looks like Karin will be it. Oh? Everyone survives. The first wham is that they lose some senses/voice. The second wham doesn't come until ep.8 when they learn that it'll keep happening. Yuuna goes Madoka as expected, claiming that they'll figure out a way to fix things. And Tougou is hinted to have a past with the ex-hero senpai. Well, as expected from there it gets really sad and ;_;, but then the ending is weird. Suddenly they decide that they're still fighting for the original good side, defeat the monster, and then without explanation, everyone gets better. So basically it's like a complete reset (or even more in Tougou's case) to the beginning. So, is it just a really big sequel hook, or, what is up with this? I don't get it. |

| Yumedamaya Kidan (special) | Good | That was fun. You can predict the ending from very early on, but it's a fun ride nonetheless. Made by lesser known animators, this short movie has a style quite different from today's standards. |
| Yurikuma Arashi (TV) | So-so | Well, Friedman listed it as her #1 yuri anime of 2015, so I guess I'll have to watch it. It's not good, just one of those must-have-seen anime :/ Same director as Utena and Mawaru Penguindrum, so I expect it won't make much sense at all. The first ep. doesn't disappoint in that regard. It's hard to keep track of who is who though. Some of the names and faces are too similar >_< If this is one of those "it's symbolic" anime, I wonder what it's meant to say that the only male characters seen so far are the Severance judges. "Yuri is only allowed if approved by men"? That's one bad message. Well, even with those explanations on ANN I don't really get all the supposedly deep stuff. Seems to me that this anime just has a super complicated and hard to understand way of saying that things are as they are, but doesn't really condemn things being that way, or even really comment on it much. For all the overly obvious yuri imagery, there are still a whole load of characters who end up dead or otherwise unhappy, and the main couple only gets to be together by escaping to some other dimension. The 'real' world remains as it is, and no comment is made on whether these things are good or bad. My conclusion is that it's yet another Ikuhara anime that pretends to be deep but ultimately doesn't really have much substance, and on the way is so convoluted that even if it did have substance it'd be impossible to follow, so the whole thing is just a waste of effort. A pretty waste of effort surely, but that doesn't make it good. |
| Yurumates (OAV) | So-so | +sequel. Saw this included in a list of slice-of-life anime. Adapted to anime twice? Hmm, it looks like this is also a series of 13 short segments, just collected into one video. I hope the other version includes different parts. Well, that was.. slightly meh. The gags aren't all that funny, and the animation is also pretty simple. It's not bad, just not very interesting. |

Hmm, ep.1 at least is exactly the same as the first segment in the other version. Maybe it's just the intro, right? Yes, the rest is new material. With the short eps. things don't get too long-winded at least. The gags are still a bit meh. Looks like S2 is a direct continuation (if you can call stand-alone eps. that) because there's a preview at the end of the last ep. |
| Yurumates3Dei Plus (TV) | So-so | And more of the same silliness. Plus 2 OVA eps., also the same. Yurumates is more my pace than things like Teikyuu, but I can't say it's very interesting. |
| Yuruyuri (OAV 2019) | So-so | One final ep. (it's 30min. long, but the extra time is mostly taken up by the ending credits having to fit all the crowdfunders in). Most of the running gags/stereotypes appear of course. The art felt a little off now and then, but I guess that's to be expected if the artists had to draw one single ep. years after the franchise ended. The cavewomen bit was okayish, though not outstanding. The party was kinda meh really. The Akari HBD thing at the end was nice, but not enough to carry the whole thing. Overall, don't bother unless you're desperate for more Yuruyuri. |
| Yuruyuri - Happy Go Lily (TV) | So-so | It's sort-of a parody of yuri in anime, and sort-of actual yuri in anime. As a parody it's so-so, as a regular slice of life anime it's okayish, but it gets dragged down by Chitose's constant nosebleeds and other yuri parody stuff. It's fun when it tones down the yuri and tries to be slice of life, but that doesn't happen often enough. All together it's worth watching once for yuri fans, but no more than that. |
| Yuruyuri - Happy Go Lily (TV2) | Good | This anime gets a lot better once it drops the nosebleeds and other over the top stuff. This season was actually quite okay. There's hardly any plot or even consecutive scenes (except for the second to last ep.), but that's okay too. |
| Yuruyuri Nachu Yachumi! (OAV) | Decent | Clearly a movie for fans, as every one of the characters gets their screentime to show their particular quirks (except for Akarin's disappearing act, although it does get mentioned). Otherwise there's not all that much plot, but that's expected for a slice-of-life anime. And the backgrounds are pretty, so overall it's enjoyable. |
| Yuruyuri Nachu Yachumi!+ (TV) | Decent | Ep.1 seems to very much cash in on the movie, what with all the photos. Some of it is new, of course, but it still feels a bit low cost and fan pandering. Ep.2 was fairly normal with only a few references to Nachuyachumi. Someone had just been playing Animal Crossing though. A good part of the ep. was the characters (all eight) playing it together. Overall, okayish. |
| Yuruyuri San Hai! (TV 3) | Good | I feel like this season is gentler than the previous ones. There are still some running gags, but they don't get as much emphasis, and all the characters get some cute/sweet spotlights. A very good addition to the series. Watched this a 2nd time to get back into it before the 10th anniv. OVA. It's okayish. The gags are hit or miss, but at least there's some hits. And the more gentle parts are nice. I can't really recommend the franchise as a whole though. Chinatsu and Ikeda have some nice moments now and then, but mostly they're creepy stereotypes. As is Akari's sister. |
| Yuyushiki (TV) | Very good | This was pretty great :) The jokes are a little too weird/random at times, but Yuzuko and Yukari hitting on Yui and Yui getting flustered is just adorable ^_^ They really didn't shun the innuendo here. I think I'll buy this when it comes out translated. |
| Zeiram (live-action movie) | Weak | Both the acting and special effects are pretty bad. The fight scenes look rather fake too. Toward the end there are a lot of really long shots of the main characters basically just posing for the camera. I suppose for a lowish-budget movie it's the best they could do, but if this is what tokusatsu is generally like I'll stick with anime. |
| Zeiram 2 (live-action movie) | Weak | The special effects are a lot better this time, but the acting is pretty bad still. Also at the end there was again the focus on the main characters acting exhausted. Is that a thing or something? Anyway, while this movie was a bit better in relating to what I think is the original background story, it's still very very far from the anime's awesomeness. |
| Zetsumetsu Kigu Shōjo Amazing Twins (OAV) | Decent | Not sure if this is good, but it's by Satou Jun and is only 2 eps., so might as well check it out. Cute, as expected of something by Satou. Intriguing setup, but that'll probably not go very far in just two eps. Well, it ended happily at least. Satou is good at feel-good and slice-of-life, but he does have a penchant for moe with some fanservice. It could be worse, but it'd be better if he didn't. Anyway, this was enjoyable. I wish it were longer. |

| Zettai Shonen (TV) | Not really good | I hope things get more exciting soon. The first ep. wasn't very interesting until the end. Hmm, it did get quite intriguing. Slow-paced, but very intriguing. And now the preview for ep.13 looks even stranger.. I know that slow pans over still frames are a common limited animation technique, but this anime is taking it to extremes. It feels like 90% of it consists of people talking while the camera pans over random, still scenery. And the things they talk about aren't that interesting either. Well, they would be, if they moved a little faster. Five episodes of waffling about what to say is too much even for me. I hope the ending will at least have a little more action, but it's only a small hope, considering that most of the characters from the first half of the series were left behind without much resolution. Okay, so the ending did wrap things up, sort of. That still doesn't excuse taking this long to tell a very simple story. |
| Zombie Land Saga (TV) | Very good | Kinda like SB69, except undead, according to Tricky's source. Update: Lily is trans. Well, the first ep. was quite hilarious. I wonder what's going to happen next. Hey, that was a really cool anime. It started with zombie stuff, then awkward idol beginnings, then some character focused eps., and finally drama around Sakura. Yuugiri and Tae didn't get focus eps., we only got a quick glimpse of Koutarou's circumstances, and there's the unresolved plot of the reporter slowly catching on to the zombie thing, including the stinger. Really looking forward to the second season now. |
| Zombie Land Saga Revenge (TV) | Very good | While it's not as awesome as some parts of S1, overall it's really good again. Looks like we're finally getting some background on Yuugiri, and maybe even the reporter finding out they're zombies plot will get somewhere. Nothing on Tae yet though. Ep.6 had a random newcomer join Franchouchou for one ep., which wasn't really great. Might've been better if it had been built up more or had more consequences. Yuugiri's double ep. backstory nicely also gave some background (not a whole lot though) on the "save Saga" thing and the old barkeeper guy that didn't make much sense to be there back in S1. He seem to be some kindof personification of Saga itself. After that the buildup to and finale are appropriate. I'd expected more drama from the reporter discovering their identities though. This anime is set in 2020; you'd expect more people to make the connection than just one old reporter. The stinger is weirdly random. As I guess is fitting for this anime, but it makes you wonder if there'll be an S3. S2's stories and finale properly conclude all the story threads, so I'm not sure there's much left to tell for an S3. The only maybe not quite finished story thread could be the old Saga guy's rants about a coming catastrophe. The storm+flood appeared to fit that too, but this hints that there's more. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. |
