Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino (TV) Good Rumored to be not as good as the first season?
Oh, that's a bit of a change in art style and character designs. There seems to be more of an ongoing story this time, although the bad guys get a lot of screentime.
The ending was appropriately climactic, and the bad guys were defeated, so that's good. Overall, this season was unexpectedly deep. I'd say it was at least as good as the first, maybe better. Someone really spent a lot of time studying Italy to make it look and feel accurate.
Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino (OAV) Decent Two more eps. for Il Teatrino. The first is somewhat actionful, although nothing deep, the second just slice-of-life.
Gunsmith Cats (OAV) Decent This looks and sounds very American. With the old (1996) art style, it almost looks like an American cartoon. The gun fights and bombs are rather over the top, which kinda spoils the suspense.
.hack//Intermezzo (OAV) Very good A nice single-ep. side-story from Mimiru's past. Too bad it's not included with .hack//SIGN.
.hack//Legend of the Twilight (TV) So-so Interesting only because it's also in the .hack universe, but otherwise not very good.
.hack//Roots (TV) Good I'm not too fond of steampunk settings, but fortunately it doesn't focus on that much. The story is a little confusing at times, and the ending is rather meh. Probably because it's just a setup for some video games.
.hack//SIGN (TV) Excellent Very good story, characters and soundtrack.
Haibane Renmei (TV) Very good Ooh, it's pretty :) And very slice-of-life too. Another Aria is probably too much to hope for, but maybe this'll be close.
Well, for its length it was very good, and beautiful. I'd like it to have lasted longer though.
Haiyore! Nyaruko-san F (OAV) Not really good And one last bonus ep. This one goes full on the Nyaruko×Mahiro route, basically sidelining Kuuko and Hasuta. Fulfilling for the N×M fans, but not much content otherwise. Atoko appears again for the first time since the ONAs, but she doesn't really get to interact with the others.
Haiyoru! Nyaruani (ONA) Not really good Interested in this Lovecraft stuff. Seems to have two TV followups? Oh, according to AniDB the "remember my mr. Lovecraft" one is an alternate retelling of this, while the "Nyaruko" one is the sequel. Well, let's watch all of them then.
Hmm, seems this version at least is only a bunch of short flash animations advertising the manga. 1m40s of which ~35s ED/credits, except for ep.8, which is 6m25s long. Interesting to see a shantak as mascot/pet. In the last two eps. Cthuko (Cthugha, not Cthulhu) shows up. Images of Lovecraft are often used as decorations on things, and twice Derleth's image is used. I guess it's that corner of the mythos..
Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Mr. Lovecraft (TV) Weak List in the ANNcyclopedia as an alt. retelling of the first OVA, I can kinda see it's like that. Where the first was some quick bonus videos to promote the manga, this is more like a promo for the anime version. It's 4m long, with 10s "watch in a well-lit room", 1m30s ED, and 30s preview. That's more bank animation than actual content. In addition to Nyaruko (Nyarlathotep) and Kuuko (Cthugha), we now also get Atoko (Atlach-nacha) and one more girl. The shantak pet is still there too. Hmm, the other girl seems to be another incarnation of Nyarlathotep? Called Nyarue ("Nyarle"), but I can't find any Outer God or Great Old One with a similar name. I think the first OVA mentioned a race of aliens called Nyarlathoteps, so maybe that's how it goes in this franchise.
Well, these two OVA's were kind of a waste of time really. No story, and the jokes were barely there.
Hakumei and Mikochi (TV) Excellent I should watch this slowly, but I probably won't >_< It really is as pretty as the previews showed, and sticks very closely to the manga. Mikochi&Hakumei are such a cute couple ^_^
At first it does, but later on there are a few stories (6b, 7a, 7b, 8) that I don't recall from the manga. Some feel a little different too, so I wonder if they're anime-only additions.
Huh, turns out those were all in the manga after all, I just didn't remember. One is even from after I finished reading all there was at the time. I guess they adapted that pretty close to the broadcast date. Anyways, yeah, it still sticks very close to the manga. Like, just about every word and panel is the same. They did skip quite a bit though, even some quite interesting stories.
And then it turns out some of the quite interesting ones are there, just in different order; probably to balance the anime a bit. See HakuMiko @ Wikipedia JP for details on which ep. adapts which ch.
Anyways, the anime is just as lovely as the manga, except animated so even better ^_^
Hanayamata (TV) Good Listed on TVTropes as iyashikei? Seems there's no end to the obscure pastimes that get turned into cute-girls-looking-cute anime. The character designs look slightly different from today's standard, mostly the eyes (like everyone's wearing heavy eyeliner). Hana comes across as a real manic pixie dream girl in the first ep. I wonder if they'll tone that down later on.
It starts pretty random and hectic. By ep.3 they still don't have the whole club together. At this rate there'll be very little time to actually practice dancing. Well, by ep.5 they finally have 4 members (#5 hasn't joined yet) and a club. Of the yosakoi festival they go to see only a few shots are shown. At this rate this is going to be an anime about yosakoi that doesn't actually have any yosakoi. It's all just stills. I guess the budget didn't allow for actual dancing outside the OP&ED. By ep.10 member #5 finally joins, somewhat out of the blue.
So basically this anime is about the yosakoi club preparing for their first real performance (incl. one not quite successful minor one). We don't get to see a lot of practice, although there's a little more toward the end. There's many moments of drama that often feel a bit exaggerated. Overall it's nice, but the writing could be better.
HappinessCharge PreCure! (TV) Decent Is it me, or do characters look slightly off-model all the time in this season? It's not just the art style.
Interesting to see the first season where there are publicly known Cures all over the world. Not so sure I like this Blue guy though. Hime has a strong Erika vibe, but seems a little unstable emotionally, flipping between emotions from one sentence to the next. Doremi seem to be a little more liberal with their translations this season. The transformations looked a little meh. Oh, and the ED goes pretty deep into Uncanny Valley.
3 eps. in, I feel like this season's trying a little too hard to imitate HeartCatch. And now we have Seiji as well. Both him and Blue are already criticizing Megumi and Hime. Sad how guys always end up doing that.
Ep.13 was weird, with Lovely and Fortune fighting together without the rest of the team. So far the "Cures all over the world" thing hasn't made much of a difference in the story. And what's up with that Blue guy suddenly hugging Lovely at the end? :/ More romcom antics in ep.25 it seems. I wish they'd just kick Blue and Seiji out of this anime. Ehh, the romantic drama between Hime and Seiji is ended with "oops, mistake"? Bleh.
Ep.28 was fun though, with the Hawaiian PreCure team. Aw, we only got to see Cure Tender in one battle, without the rest of the team. Would've been nice if they'd at least let the Hikawa sisters fight together once :(
Oh, we get another double ending. Ep.43 finishes off the big bad and reunites Mirage and Blue, then we finally get to the big bad behind the big bad who until now had only been hinted at. Feels like too little too late, but there's another 6 eps. to fill. Not so great plotting there.
Well, that was that. The drawn out ending was bleh. Seiji got promoted from barely above victim of the week to suddenly super strong, but because it happened without any buildup it felt completely arbitrary. Then we finally got to Red whose name we didn't even know until ep.46, and who remained without proper motivation until the very last ep. Way to make me not care about whatever he's doing. And the explanation at the end wasn't even very good. Oh, and for the final battle the rest of the team besides Lovely get turned into ye olde mirror victims. People criticize DokiDoki PreCure for being too much about Mana, but this is the first season that sidelined 3/4 of the team in the final battle. Again bleh.
Yah, all in all this was one of the weakest PreCure seasons of all.
Happy Happy Clover (TV) Decent Cute bunnies, recommended by Maveryn. Well, the plotting seems a little childish, but I suppose that's to be expected.
Yah, it's nice and cute, but a little too childish for my taste. Could be a success with little kids though.
Happy Machine (movie) So-so Part of Genius Party. Another one with a picture book-like style. A bit melancholy and surreal.
Happy Seven (TV) Good Wow, it looks like they tried to cram three different anime into one. Mysterious past and asteroid; sentai fighting monsters from opposing group; good luck school club. I don't think all that will fit successfully in a mere 13 eps.
Hmm, it actually turned out to be quite decent after all. Not great, but definitely worth watching.
Happy-Go-Lucky Days (movie) Not really good Hadn't heard about this at all, but apparently it's yuri? It's been subbed alreay too, though by Commie.
Seems it's four short slice-of-life vignettes. The first is two ex-girlfriends of the same girl meeting at her wedding, then hooking up. The second is a teacher at a boys' highschool wanting to hang out with the boys. One boy told him he loved him, but nothing came of that. I dunno, this one gives off a bit of a creepy vibe even if nothing bad is shown or said. Part three is also kinda weird, about an older girl teasing a younger boy. Nothing really happens, but it's still uncomfortable. The last part continues that same story a while later when the girlfriend thinks about doing it with this boy.
The overall theme seems to be mostly love, though it definitely includes sex (implied or actual) in parts 1, 3 and 4. The first part is okay, the others aren't much fun.
Ah, so it's based on another Shimura Takako manga (of Aoi Hana and Wandering Son). That explains the art style, the slow pace and the slightly melancholic feel of the stories.
Haré+Guu (TV) Very good This is totally wacky random weirdness. Usually at least funny, sometimes hilarious.
It is great fun, but it still bothers me a little how this anime evokes the old tropics=lazy, carefree people stereotype. And then there's the matter of Weda's pregnancy at age 14..
Haré+Guu Deluxe (OAV) Decent See Hare+Guu. More fun in the jungle. It's an OVA, so they take things a little further than in the TV series, but luckily not too far.
Hmm, several of the eps. in this OVA were actually not as good as the series. Too many extreme face-faults.
Harmonie (movie) Good Short, but kinda cute. I'd like to see more from either part of the story.
It's really interesting to compare Yoshiura's works and find common elements in them.
I wish more of his stories were told from the female MCs' perspectives though.
Hayate the Combat Butler (TV) So-so Lol. It certainly doesn't hesitate to spell out the random plot elements it uses.
There are lots and lots of jokes, only some of which are actually funny. The characters are all very thin, and there's hardly any story. I've heard season two is better, so I think I'll finish this anyway, but I don't think I'll rewatch it.
Hayate the Combat Butler!! (OAV) Not really good Beach/fanservice episode..
Hayate the Combat Butler!! (TV) Decent Nicer art, and a better story to jokes ratio this season.
The jokes that are there are a little flat though, and the tiny amount of character development doesn't go anywhere either. All in all this isn't such a great anime as I expected.
Healin' Good Precure (TV) Good I don't think this season is going to beat last year's in excitement. It's nice enough, just kinda tame. I think I'll postpone the rest of the season until later so I can watch the movie after ep.6.
Well, that after some hiatus it still seemed Toei wanted to go for a full season, but it looks like ep.44 is the ending. The storyline about Daruizen assaulting Nodoka was resolved nicely (not letting him get his way, then properly telling him off), Guaiwaru had some unexpected depth that didn't come to much in the end (or he was set up to begin with, could be), Shindoine could've done with some better resolution if not redemption. The final battle was nicely animated, but felt a little rushed. I didn't like the whole town finding out the Cures identities and then pretending they didn't. That detail could've been left out entirely without any problem and without making the girls look silly. Looks like ep.45 is going to be the last ep. of this season? No hint of the by now usual baton handover crossover in the preview though. Oh, it was a crossover after all. Hmm, this last ep. got a bit heavy on the preaching. Like Andrea said, it's a bit strange they didn't fit such a visit to the Healing Garden earlier in the season, but I suppose that's because of the ~2mo covid delay. Well, things still worked out okay.
Heartcatch Precure! (TV) Excellent Couldn't resist starting another PreCure series ^_^;
Interesting change of style. And interesting that Tsubomi is shy instead of outgoing. So far the first or primary Cure has always been someone outgoing. She'll probably lose that trait sooner or later though. Oh, it took only one ep. to lose her glasses and shyness. That was very quick :/
And then in ep.23 Itsuki becomes PreCure #3, changing completely from boyish to girly. Not just the standard frilly outfit and high heels, but her hair goes from short to super long too, and she even switches from 'boku' to 'watashi' suddenly. Really, I love magical girl anime, and understand why they're important, but why do they all have to conform to the girly stereotype? Couldn't Tsubomi be a Cure without changing from shy flower-loving wallflower to gregarious fashionista? Couldn't Itsuki be a Cure without changing from handsome and reserved tomboy (hate that word, but can't think of a better one atm) to cute princess? Nothing wrong with girly, mind you, not at all, but it'd be nice to see a little more diversity.
The ending was okay, but could've been better balanced. Yuri's father's reveal felt a bit awkwardly timed (and a little contrived to begin with), Kumo/Cobra were disposed of very quickly, Dark PreCure could've had a more satisfying end, the final battle was first drawn out too long (from ep.48 into 49), then abruptly over, and although longer epilogues are usually better, this one was too much talk.
Well, that was HeartCatch PreCure. Highlights were the mixing up of characters, the more complex plot, more precure history/continuity with Cure Flower, Erika's behavior in general, a lack of obnoxiousness in the fairies. There's plenty to like really. I think it comes pretty close to being the best series so far, but there's just a few details that hold it back. So Splash Star is still first for me.
Heartcatch Precure! Hana no Miyako de Fashion Show…Desu ka!? (movie) Very good Too bad Doremi don't translate signs and such. The movie's opening has tons of them.
The first half of the movie had really awesome backgrounds and 3D. The 2D foreground contrasted a little too much at times though. The second half toned down the visual exuberance a bit, but was still pretty good.
Interesting to see this season's movie not taking place in a separate world (although I suppose Paris could count a bit as that). In any case it's much more connected to the series than usual. I was thinking they'd finally ditched the silly miracle lights, but at the last moment they made a sudden appearance. It was thankfully short though.
Story-wise this kinda falls apart. The various parts could make sense individually and together, but there's just not enough time to connect them properly.
All in all, the visual fun is definitely worth watching, but the rest is, well, I suppose no worse than other PreCure movies.
Oh, one more thing. This movie goes after ep.38, not ep.37 as the air/opening dates suggest. Not too big a deal, but the movie has ep.38's new transformation/power in it at the end.
Heaven's Design Team (TV) Very good Seems it was good/funny. Also has some trans rep., though I'm not sure it's great in that respect.
Well, the first ep. was allright. What's up with the weirdly translated names though? The characters have pretty ordinary Japanese names, but the English translation turns them into Jupiter, Mars, Venus, etc. Except for Shimoda, who is still Shimoda. Weird.
Oh, forgot to conclude this ^_^; It's pretty good. I'd like to see a second season of this. They didn't show many fish (or at all?). Plants might also be interesting.
Hell Girl (TV) Very good This is an episodic anime. Each episode has its own story, and there is little ongoing plot. At least at first. Later episodes start to have a bit of a connecting plot, and only the final few episodes focus only on that. The individual stories are well-made though.
The ending is relatively happy, but it leaves some things unfinished, to be continued in the second season. The separate episodes' stories are often very unhappy though, with only a little bit of light at the end.
The art is very pretty, with only a few minor flaws (reused animation, 2D characters in otherwise 3D scenes). I especially liked the use of color, not too bright and colorful, but also not as drab as some other recent anime.
Another thing that impressed me is how this anime doesn't have a good versus evil theme. It shows some very messed up everyday villains get punished, but left me questioning the rightness of all three parties, much as the main characters do. That's something not many anime do, even though anime in general is much more balanced in that respect than western animation.
Hell Girl: Three Vessels (TV) Very good Hmm, it's been a while since I watched the first two seasons. Who is who again, and how did they get where they are now? I'm not sure, but it seems that the art is a tiny bit sloppier than I recall.
Overall, this season isn't much different from the previous two. Many different stories, but all with common elements. Be sure to keep something uplifting handy for afterwards, because the end (Yuzuki's story) is very tragic.
Hell Girl: Two Mirrors (TV) Good Hmm. The animation/art quality is a little lower this season it seems.
There is even less of an ongoing plot between episodes in this season, except for the last several episodes when some earlier occurrences are pulled together for a grander finale. The only thing new is that there is an additional recurring character, Kikuri, an annoying little girl with bug eyes.
Other than that we also get the background stories of the other main characters, Ichimoku Ren, Hone-Onna and Wan'yuudou. The episodes themselves are the same, mostly sad stories as the first season. The ending/finale is very sad as well, with only a small spark of optimism in the very last minute or so.
Hello!! KINMOZA (TV) Decent More of the same, with two new characters added to keep things fresh. The regular characters seem to have their relative quirks more emphasized too. The same thing goes for both seasons, it's sort of like Croisée meets Strawberry Marshmallow. At its best it's a lot like A-Channel, mostly it's like SM (some chars. too moe to live), with the foreigner out of water thing only occasionally brought up for flavor. Not really bad, but not good enough to be worth owning either.
Hentatsu (TV) Good Cute and very short. 13 eps., but in total about as long as one regular length ep. They're just cute convos between Irodori director Tatsuki and art director Yuuko (at least I think it was her, they mentioned it at some point; both represented as girls btw). Eps. 1 and 12 have Kemurikusa-style action, though they mention right after it in ep.1 that it doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the anime, lol. Looking forward to whatever Irodori's next project is going to be.
Hidamari Sketch (TV) Excellent This was so cute. It's indeed a lot like Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh, but on a smaller scale. It's shorter (only 12 eps.), has a smaller cast, and doesn't have as many references to other stuff. Being about art students, it does have some interesting bits of art/photography. Mostly it's just cute though. I haven't started the second season yet because it's only been half subbed yet.
Hidamari Sketch (special) Excellent See Hidamari Sketch. Two more nice episodes to the series.
Hidamari Sketch × 365 (TV) Excellent Yay, it's finally finished subbing. More cuteness! ^_^
A very nice second season, that somehow covers the same year as the first. I wonder what it would be like if you put all the episodes of Hidamari Sketch, the special, and × 365 in proper date order.
My gaydar pinged at Sae and Natsume a few times.
I hope Hidamari Sketch gets licensed quickly. I want to buy it :)
Hidamari Sketch × 365 (special) Excellent Another ep. full of cute pictures of the Hidamari girls ^_^
Hidamari Sketch × Honeycomb (TV) Excellent I think they turned up both the fanservice and the yuri a notch. It's still really cute though. I wish it was longer.
I also just realized there weren't any out of order episodes or parts this season.
Hidamari Sketch × Hoshimittsu (TV) Excellent Aw, Nazuna is even more timid than Yuno was when she came to Hidamari. I'm sure the others will help her though, and she'll get more confident, just like Yuno.
I wonder if the anime is starting to get close to where the manga is. × ☆☆☆ has parts of it set during Yuno and Miyako's first year, so the time spent in the second year isn't as long as the previous series. The art and animation are a little bit different than the previous seasons, but I can't put a finger on what it is. Maybe Shaft have gone more digital?
I find it hard to believe that everyone at Hidamari except for Nori are unfamiliar with computers. How did something like that not get noticed by the creators?
Hidamari Sketch × Hoshimittsu (special) Excellent
Hidamari Sketch × SP (special) Excellent
Hidamari Sketch: Sae & Hiro Graduation (OAV) Excellent Aww ;_; Goodbye Sae-san, Hiro-san.. I wonder if there'll be any more Hidamari Sketch or if this is the end.
Higan (OAV) Weak Part 4 of Sweat Punch, discussed here.
A single war/battle scene, only 6 min. long. Spoiler: everyone dies. I suppose the animation is okayish/appropriate? Can't say much about the art though, as it's all very dark/low res.
Himawari Too!! (TV) Good A new season, a new foe. And a mysterious one too. Could they be related to the opening all the way back of season one? I feel this season there's a little too much reliance on Hayato's obsession with food as instigation of events. More variety please.
I liked how Himawari and Hayato got a little closer in the episode before the finale. The ending was appropriately grand, although it got a little hectic. I would've liked the epilogue to be a little longer. All in all it was a fun series (both seasons together). I'm not sure I'll buy it. Maybe.
Himawari! (TV) Good My first actual ninja anime. It's cute and fun. It may not be awesome, but it's still entertaining, so maybe I'll buy it (low-priority).
Hina Logic - from Luck & Logic (TV) Decent Another one of those yuri spinoffs of male-protag anime like A Certain Scientific Railgun, Soul Eater Not and Aria The Scarlet Ammo AA. The previews of this weren't very positive though, and apparently it's also fanservicey.
Well, the fanservice is common, but not everywhere. Ep.11 was pretty bad though. Overall, this anime is nice, but not great. As slice-of-life it's okay, but doesn't go very deeply into the characters' backgrounds and stuff; as sci-fi it's kinda lacking, as the whole Logicalist and Foreigner thing isn't explained much, it just kinda hangs around in the background. So yeah, nice, but not really great.
Hinata no Aoshigure (movie) Decent After watching Rain Town I thought the pantyshots in Fumiko's Confession and Paulette's Chair might just be exceptions (they were earlier, shorter works of Ishida), but watching this it seems he hasn't changed yet. It's not as prominent, but there is one scene where Hinata "accidentally" (as if there is such a thing in fiction) keeps staring at Shigure's panties. She also gets to see his when he forgets to close his zipper, but "equal opportunity" is not an improvement IMHO. *sigh*
Anyways, the animation and art are otherwise nice. The whole story is told from Hinata's perspective, as usual with male directors it seems, and the romance thing feels kinda out of place for children who look hardly older than kindergarteners. Overall this is more like a demo of what Ishida/Colorido can do than a substantial story.
Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu (TV) Decent Andrea seemed to like it a lot. Or at least at first.
Another 4-koma slice-of-life anime with a weird premise. I guess it's watchable.
Well, that was pretty sweet. Not super exciting, just sweet, with some funny.
HOME! (movie) Decent Anime No Tane 2021
Huh, this is pretty short. Only 7½ min. instead of the usual 20~24min. Decent implied worldbuilding, though some of the visuals are kinda Star Trek-inspired. The action scene felt way exaggerated, and unnecessary. They should've used that time for more interaction between two main characters. As it is they never really talk. Wish this were longer. The ghost girl deserves more.
Hoshizora Kiseki (ONA) Decent Just one short 30min anime. It has a nice feeling, but there's a little too little background to understand everything that goes on (although you can guess of course).
