Really, what the hell was that? And did anyone think to remind Peter Cheung that he wasn't doing Aeon Flux anymore? |

All this show is—and I mean all this show is—is a bunch of girls rowing gondolas on Mars, bantering back and forth about how happy they are and how beautiful life is, while occasionally breaking for a day trip through some old town or to go to the beach for lunch. And yet, somehow this is one of the most beautiful and captivating shows I've ever seen. Why Martians rowing boats is as sweet and sentimental as it is, I have no idea, but damn does it work. If you have any kind of a heart, you are cheating yourself by missing out on this one. |

Hits all the right points from the novel with a sufficiently convoluted script and at least gets the main cast spot on. Short-haired Nagi for the win. It just...tends to look weird half the time. |

Though I was at first put off by the series's attempt to take some of the whimsy out of Matsumoto's universe by trying to "legitimize" a military based on space train platoons, I stuck with it and came out rewarded in the end. Nothing really outstanding, but completely likable regardless, with fun characters and a nice, casual, episodic pace throughout most of its run, kindly treading back over the same themes Matsumoto's preached for the past several decades now. |

Some angry kid uses angry kid superpowers on some other angry kid with angry kid superpowers, heavy metal music blares, some girl's involved—I think—and a lot of convoluted, ill-explained science fiction bullcrap runs its course in a delightfully convoluted and ill-explained fashion. Oh, and did I mention it's all rendered out in some of the stiffest and most amateur CG animation ever conceived by man? Yeah, I don't know why I watched this, either. |

What do you get when a studio takes a bunch of Photoshop textures and uses them to adapt a literary classic into a futuristic Japanese cartoon set to symphonic techno-punk music? You get one of the single best anime I've ever seen, that's what. Slick, stylish, and impressively faithful to the spirit of Dumas's original novel, it's genuinely difficult to find fault with Gankutsuou. It's simply a brilliant spin on one of the greatest stories of divine retribution ever penned, all capped off with one of the most charismatic and enigmatic leading men anime has to offer. |

It wasn't very well animated either. |

Characters don't stand around and recite each others' sentences for twenty episodes, moronic kids don't go on pseudo-incestual filler adventures, and stuff actually feels like it's getting done. Still rather slow and meticulous, but good. I'm actually impressed. |

Not bad, but given that half the series feels like you're camping out in the World of Warcraft chatroom listening to all the inane quest and "h4x" banter, it's not all that great, either. Honestly, there are more engaging ways to develop a story than having your cast sit around and gab about things for some dozen or more episodes before one of them gets the bright idea that they might wanna act on all the tough talk and get the flying testicles of doom off the introvert's back. |

When compared to its OVA counterpart, it's a complete insult to anyone's sense of aesthetic quality and half-decent storytelling, but it at least had spiffy music. |

Y'know, this movie was a real mess. Naraku dies, some epilogue crap happens, that abysmal Sango/Kohaku angle is dredged up, some new baddie appears, the creators write themselves into a corner, and then boom, Naraku magically reappears and we're back to where we started. Yeah, it's a bit much to expect movies based on 100+ episode anime to honestly further the plot, but the way this one played out just felt especially inane and pointless. Fronting that you've killed the series's main baddie isn't worth much if he just shows up again at the end for no real reason with nothing worthwhile really happening in his absence. |

So we take a moment of our time to break away from the endless cycle of futile, self-defeating Naraku pursuits and soul-scarring filler about Shippo's bad day in order to take a more in-depth look into the origins of our resident dog-eared siblings, and especially into the motivations and personal ideals of enigmatic grey-area semi-baddie Sesshoumaru. And all of this as part of a rather nifty yarn about the nastiest-looking meat sword this side of Soul Calibur. Bravo, Inu-Yasha producers, bravo. Now if only the rest of the franchise were this captivating. |

Didn't they already have an elf-eared moth monster as part of a filler arc in the series? Was it really worth revisiting? And am I the only one who felt seeing Sesshoumaru own the shit out of the main villain in the first five minutes just cheapened the rest of the film by making said mothman villain seem weak? The movie was very well animated, I'll give it that, but for the most part, it just felt like some ho-hum super long filler whose conclusion was already certain before it even began. |

A recipe for incredibly fresh and witty comedy, yes, but also a surprisingly touching story about growing up and finding joy in mundane, everyday life. Uproarious fun that'll make you think and guarantees a smile on your face at the end of every episode, there's no way you could go wrong with that. |

With another five to ten episodes to play with, this could've been the next 08th MS Team in terms of high quality Gundam sidestory anime, but it's still fine the way it is. |

I love this show, I love the unique Gainaxy spin on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Captain Nemo is hardcore awesome, and Samson is the greatest henchman ever...but holy crap, this show really should've only been done in twenty-six episodes! I mean yikes, could they have dragged that desert island arc out any longer? Still, great vintage Gainax with some nice prototypal Evangelion elements for the savvy to pick at. |

Well now, here I was expecting to pop this show in and be all-out assaulted by the usual generic harem love triangle dreck, chock full of cheap sexual sight gags and dirty overbearing fanservice, all capped off by some contrived conclusion where our resident loser winds up getting to bone multiple women without consequence forever and ever. And yet, it didn't happen. Oh, that stuff was all still there, but somehow they actually managed to make it entertaining, probably by playing it cool, taking a sweet and simple route, and not approaching sex and romance like a pillow-humping pubescent. |

So somewhere along the way, the guy that directed the masterful Tsuiokuhen OVA got the idea to take Kenshin and turn it inside out. That has to be what happened, because suddenly we have this great story of personal redemption reduced to one man's pitiful wallowing in misery and self-loathing, a lot of maddeningly contradictory behavior on the part of Kenshin's regular cast, more petty, pissy angst than you could shake a fat emo kid at, and a horrifically scuttled excuse for a Jinchuu Arc to top it all off. It's a shame they took so much effort to make such a piece of crap look so pretty. |

Here we have one of the most tragic moments of the Rurouni Kenshin manga, made even more tragic by stripping it of any major reference to the source material and boiling away the thick layer of "shounen" that permeated the original, until all that's left is the simple story of two lonely people in war-torn Japan finding true love in one another despite secretly working for opposite sides. One of anime's biggest tear-jerkers, and without a doubt one of the best OVAs I have ever seen. |

Except here it's really good. Hard to pin down, but somehow Shana takes as many dulled and irritating anime stereotypes as possible, and actually manages to work them into a pretty fun and compelling story. Nothing award-winning, but solid, jolly-good entertainment all the same. |

Slick, stylish, and fun with some really unique action sequences, but not a whole helluva lot else. |

What started out as a fun detective show akin to a bishounen'd out Detective Conan ultimately turned into a pretty pathetic exercise in completely forgetting where the story was going. Rather than reach some conclusion about this "Blade Children" crap that the writers so insistently shove in the viewers' faces every five minutes, the producers apparently decided that depicting as much inane and repetitive pretty boy angst as possible in the last fifteen or so episodes of the series was of far greater importance. At least resident females Rio and Hiyono were adorable to watch. |

It's Aqua Teen Hunger Force for the Land of the Rising Sun. And like Aqua Teen, the more you know about its native country's pop culture and standards of etiquette, the funnier it becomes. Otherwise, it's more of a mindnumbing piece of crap with a shaky grasp at absurdist humor. |

Here's the plan: take the first arc of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA and increase its length nearly five-fold, strip away much of the OVA's heavy dialogue, give main baddie Kagato a facelift and turn him into a power-hungry usurper, add a highly beloved new member to the Tenchi cast, wing it with a splash of filler, and see what comes up. The result will be a Tenchi incarnation that will please fans of the original's frantic comedy and fun story, yet irk fans of its dry, endless babble about goddesses and royal bloodlines and whatnot. The better Tenchi to come to for quick laughs, though a bit more vapid in actual story content. |

I've moved this one to "Seen All" even though I haven't yet watched the last six-episode story arc. From what I hear it's rushed & unnecessary, and the Thousand Miles of Wind, Sky of Dawn story arc has such a strong and conclusive ending in itself that it might as well be the series' ending proper. If I ever get ahold of the last arc I'll watch it, but for now I'd like to believe that the series ended on a genuinely excellent note such as episode thirty-nine. |

Now this is a gem. It's hard enough to find a magical girl anime that even tries to expand on its characters, much less takes it to the kind of lengths Uta~Kata does. Psychological magical girl, you ask? Why yes, indeed it is. And a damn rewarding one, too, chock full of coming of age goodness. Just a damn shame that people who only look at the surface are so quick to write it off as some cheap loli fanservice vehicle, when it really has so much more to offer. |

I'm placing this series in the "Seen All" category even though I have not seen the four recap episodes. The reason being that recap episodes typically do not add any real substance to the story, and it could be enjoyed & comprehended just as easily without them. So, short of a couple extra frames of animation, I actually have "seen all." |

Given that the manga has yet to (and likely never will) end, and the movie featured a rushed ending after ninety-someodd minutes of bloody, bloody fluff, this is already the best incarnation of X ever conceived for simply finishing and maintaining a coherent story. Of course, the fact that said coherent story is top notch and manages to streamline much of what was left feeling rather disjointed in the manga is a welcome bonus, as is the slick animation and absolutely awe-inspiring musical score. If you had to pick one incarnation of X to drop money for, this'd be the one, hands down. |

You remember how the X movie was basically one long series of really gory vignettes based loosely on whatever volumes of the X manga had been released up until that point? Well that's basically kinda sorta pretty much exactly what this is, only it's ninety-four minutes shorter and decidedly more accurate to its source material. You sit there, bob your head to the catchy screamy Japanese punk rockers, go "ah, I remember that part!" to yourself a few times, ogle the pretty colors, and then it's over. Not really a whole lot else to it. |
