11eyes (TV) Very good For whatever reason, I really enjoyed this series. The plot-heavy second half was incredibly entertaining, and that did a great deal to elevate the weaker early episodes.
11eyes (OAV) Decent
5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) Masterpiece Somewhat slow-paced, but delightfully melancholy. Something like the spiritual opposite to most romance anime. High chance of watery eyes and general sadness.
A-Channel (TV) Good
Actually, I Am… (TV) Decent
Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero (TV) Decent
Ah! My Goddess (TV)
Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy (TV)
Aiura (TV) Good
Akame ga KILL! (TV) Good
Akane Iro ni Somaru Saka (TV) Very good A solid harem series. Definitely not for anyone who isn't a fan of the genre, though. Certainly not the most offensive example out there, but fanservice and genre tropes nonetheless abound. That being said, I've watched and enjoyed the series three times, and abundant fanservice without decent plot or characters is hardly enough to keep me coming back like that.
Akane Iro ni Somaru Saka Hardcore (OAV) So-so Good for fanservice and a few crude laughs. Fans of the main series aren't missing out if they don't see this.
Akikan! (TV) Good
Akikan! (OAV) Good
Akira (movie) Excellent
Alien Nine (special) Good Alien Nine was pretty good, but I didn't understand it at all. If it made more sense, I would have giving it a much higher rating.
Amagi Brilliant Park (TV) Excellent
(The) Ambition of Oda Nobuna (TV) Good
And Yet the Town Moves (TV) Very good A typical Akiyuki Shinbo/SHAFT production. Not as good as their best stuff, but nonetheless well-animated and reliably amusing.
Angel Beats! (TV) Masterpiece Left me speechless. Incredibly well-written, excellent characterization, fantastic plot, funny when it wants to be, but also capable of some perfectly good action scenes. And to top it all off, it was extremely touching as well. I teared up no less than 5 times, and two of those turned into full-on crying...but those sentimental scenes never felt forced or contrived, and they flowed in the overall plot perfectly. Indeed, that made them even better, since I never saw them coming. The ending is INCREDIBLE. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Angel Beats! is the best anime I have ever seen.
(The) Animatrix (OAV)
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (TV) Masterpiece A wonderfully heartwarming story. The characters are bursting with personality and warmth, the animation is great, the music is great, the ending is fantastic...I have no complaints whatsoever.
Another (TV) Masterpiece An incredible horror/thriller anime. Real-feeling characters, a plot filled with perfectly-executed twists, and a wonderful build-up of creepy atmosphere combine to make this one of the most heart-pounding series I've ever seen. Good animation and some of the best sound use I know of are just the icing on the cake.
Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon (TV) So-so
Arakawa Under the Bridge (TV) Excellent The best anime about crazy hobos living under a bridge that I've ever seen. ;) Seriously, though, Arakawa has some of the most original and engaging characters around, and is definitely worth watching for just about anyone.
Arakawa under the Bridge × Bridge (TV) Excellent An excellent follow-up to the first season; everything good about the series is at least maintained, if not improved.
Astarotte's Toy (TV) Decent A fairly good series, in most respects, but really dragged down by its unwillingness to fully take leave of its bishoujo trappings. Astarotte's Toy started well, with a number of very interesting twists on genre tropes in the first few episodes, and stayed fairly solid throughout. However, much of its fanservice (though fairly mild, by genre standards) feels entirely out-of-place. The series as a whole is adorable and "pure", which is ruined every time the loli characters are blatantly used as fanservice. Fanservice, even loli fanservice, doesn't usually bother me (and, in fact, I thought the non-loli fanservice in this series was rather high-quality and didn't feel awkward at all). However, the overall wholesome tone of the series didn't mesh at all with the repeated sexualization of several of the younger girls. It came off as creepy and inappropriate, far more so than it would have in a series that was more generally vulgar, and really soured my (otherwise quite good) opinion of the series as a whole.
Attack on Titan (TV) Excellent
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Excellent One of the best pure comedies out there. Azumanga has an amazing ability to draw humor out of the everyday interactions of its exagerrated characters. Anybody who appreciates good comedy should watch this.
B Gata H Kei - Yamada’s First Time (TV) Excellent An anime that is simultaneously a sex-obsessed comedy (and a good one, at that) and a sweet-as-sugar romance, somehow. The two lead characters are wonderful, both as individuals and as a pair. B Gata H Kei validated my long-held theory that even series that are "obviously just another mediocre fanservice show" can turn out to have entertainment value beyond simple perversity. Indeed, this series had none (that I noticed) of what I consider the most annoying variety of fanservice, the "accidental" pantyshots/nipslips/etc. that show up during an otherwise innocent scene.
Baccano! (TV) Masterpiece Probably the best series out there for introducing people to anime. Complex plot, heart-pounding action, well-written characters, splattery gore, wonderful humor, etc. Baccano! has just about everything you could want from an anime, and the execution of all these elements is flawless. As proof: every person I know to have watched Baccano! has immediately wanted to rewatch the entire series. Besides it simply being a fantastic anime, Baccano! also boasts the bar-none best example of a story told out of chronological order, which makes watching it a second or third time much more exciting.
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts (TV) Excellent
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts 2 (TV) Excellent A great follow-up to the first season. This season was every bit as funny as I expected it to be, and it also featured some very interesting visuals.
Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts OVA Excellent
Bakemonogatari (TV) Masterpiece Incredible. Bakemonogatari can somehow devote half an episode to a single conversation and be terrifically entertaining the entire time. In addition, the animation is fantastic, and the profusion of artsy flair adds an excellent touch. Utterly engrossing and delightful, with lively characters and art; one of the most unique (and wonderful) anime I have ever seen.
Barakamon (TV) Excellent
Battle Athletes Victory (TV)
Beelzebub (TV) Very good Just...a lot of fun. The animation isn't the best, and you'll be sorely disappointed if you expect a traditional shounen action series, but Beelzebub gets high marks for its humor, quirky cast, and general entertainment value.
Ben-To (TV) Good
Beyond the Boundary (TV) Very good
Birdy the Mighty Decode:02 (TV) Excellent Does some things better than the first season, and some things worse. The focus of the show is a little different, and I was disappointed at first, but I gradually grew to enjoy it. The last few episodes are quite wonderful, and the last episode features one of the most impressive fight scenes I've seen in an anime.
Birdy the Mighty: Decode (TV) Excellent A good bit of sci-fi. Has nice amounts of action and romance. Pretty funny, too.
Black Bullet (TV) Good
Black Butler (TV) Good Shiny, but somewhat lacking in substance.
Black Butler II (TV) Very good A more straightforward plot elevates this season above the first, despite an even greater overabundance of blatant pandering to fangirls. There were times when it felt like the series dragged a bit, but several outstanding episodes, especially the last one, made up for the less interesting ones.
Black Lagoon (TV) Excellent Over-the-top action, plain and simple. Gunfights, explosions, and more abound. Black Lagoon, more than any other anime, feels like an American action movie. This is definitely worth watching by anybody who wants some good old-fashioned violence.
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Excellent More of the mayhem that the first season did so well. The first three episodes in particular are amazing (creepy little children make anything at least 25% better).
Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody
Blood Lad (TV) Excellent
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV) Very good Perverted, shallow, and excessively violent. Chock-full of ecchi moments, bloody deaths, and (extremely) low-brow humor. If you think you can tolerate it, you won't be disappointed. It's quite funny, if you can appreciate the immature comedy that fills the show.
Blue Exorcist (TV) Very good High-quality, very nice-looking shonen. The first four-fifths of the series are wonderful, but the ending feels rather abrupt, and has some fairly stupid aspects.
Blue Spring Ride (TV) Excellent
Bodacious Space Pirates (TV) Very good
Boku no Imōto wa "Ōsaka Okan" (TV) So-so
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan Second (OAV) Very good Even better (or would that be worse?) than the first one. The blood is blood-ier, the laughs are laugh-ier, and the ecchi is ecchi-er. If you liked the first part, you'll love this.
Bottle Fairy (TV) Very good Adorable. Sickeningly adorable. Four little fairies spend their days having Rugrats-style imaginary adventures. Extremely cutesy, but also quite funny. Anybody but the most hardcore manly-men should enjoy this.
A Bridge to the Starry Skies (TV) Good A well-executed, by-the-book harem series. Good, but not really original. The only things worth really noting are the presence of the main character's younger brother, who is somewhat unusual for this sort of series, and the opening theme, which is probably the best generic harem opening I've ever seen, if that makes sense.
Brynhildr in the Darkness (TV) Decent
Btooom! (TV) Good
Bunny Drop (TV) Masterpiece Incredibly cute and wholesome, with nice artwork too.
Campione! (TV) Good
Castle in the Sky (movie) Excellent Lovely. Classic Miyazaki. Everyone should watch it.
Cat Planet Cuties (TV) Decent Bleh. For appearing so promising, Asobi ni Ikuyo has very little going for it, in terms of actual entertainment. It was funny only rarely, the action wasn't very exciting, the romance was shallow and boring (no surprise there), and the main character's incredible blandness didn't help anything. There were only two things that were truly interesting: the incredibly adorable Assitaroids, and one of the main girls, who had an impressively complex relationship with the main character, at least by genre standards.
Cat Soup (OAV) Very good Weird. Very good, but also very hard to describe. Go watch it yourself, you'll see what I mean.
A Certain Magical Index (TV) Excellent A straightforward, high-quality action series with a fairly interesting premise.
A Certain Magical Index II (TV) Good Not as good as the first season; the plot has its good parts, and some of the characters and individual stories are great, but the overall plot feels a bit clunky and lacks direction.
Chaos;HEAd (TV) Very good This show is freaky. It's all about crazy people. Feels a lot like Higurashi, but with less violent stabbing and more going insane. It's weak on other points, but it's worth watching if you like psychological shows.
Chihayafuru (TV) Excellent
Children Who Chase Lost Voices (movie) Excellent
Chitose Get You!! (TV) Decent
Chobits (TV) Very good
Chrome Shelled Regios (TV) Good Above-average in some ways, merely average in others. A typical action series with a somewhat interesting setting.
Chronicles of the Going Home Club (TV) Very good
Clannad (TV) Excellent Amazing. As far as moe-moe harem series go, this might well be the best one. The main character is really, really great, and the cast in general is bursting with personality. Clannad is (very) funny when it wants to be, moving when it wants to be, and just generally awesome. Highly recommended.
Claymore (TV) Good
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Masterpiece The animation is gorgeous, the dialogue is well-written, the characters are interesting, and the plot is superb. I can't think of a single complaint. I know there are people who dislike the plot (it could be characterized as "careening" quite accurately), but I find the show to be all the more impressive for its ability to have a fast-paced, wildly energetic plot and a sizable cast and still remain coherent and entertaining.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Masterpiece Even better than the first season. This is where the show really shines. Admittedly, Code Geass does require a significant amount of suspension of disbelief on the part of the viewer, but if you are capable of that, you will not be disappointed. The last five episodes easily rank as one of the best three finales I've ever seen in an anime (the other two would probably be Angel Beats! and Baccano!).
(The) Comic Artist and His Assistants (TV) Decent
Corpse Princess: Aka (TV) Excellent Probably the best monster-of-the-week anime I've ever seen. Shikabane Hime is a carefully-made mix of all the various elements that fans of shonen anime enjoy. However, slight flaws in execution, and an over-abundance of fan service, prevent it from being as good as it could be.
Corpse Princess: Kuro (TV) Very good A satisfying continuation of the series, save for the ending, which is incredibly weak. The last few episodes really drag the show down. The first season felt like a build up to this second one, and yet the second season doesn't entertain as much as the first season. A good show (except for the ending), but somehow lacking.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Masterpiece
Coyote Ragtime Show (TV) Good A good action show. It sticks to a single story arc for the entire thirteen episodes, which is nice. It really doesn't deviate for side stories, and it doesn't let up on the action for long. I love the first episode.
Cuticle Detective Inaba (TV) Good
C³ (TV) Good A fairly well-made magical girlfriend-type series. The first few episodes are especially good, displaying better-than-expected humor for the genre.
D-Frag! (TV) Good
Dagashi Kashi (TV) Good
Dance in the Vampire Bund (TV) Very good Feels like Bakemonogatari, re-imagined as a gory, fanservice-laden action series.
A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives (TV) Decent Very nice visuals, but otherwise nothing too outstanding. The story drags quite a bit in places, and sometimes seems needlessly convoluted.
Date A Live (TV) Good
Date A Live II (TV) Decent
DearS (TV)
Death Note (TV) Masterpiece Excellent. Many people don't like Death Note, mostly because Light (the protagonist) is not, to put it gently, a nice guy. He is basically the villain of the show. But, that's okay. I still found myself rooting for him, and I think that much of the show's greatness comes from his uniqueness. Death Note is easily the best mystery-type show I've seen (not counting Higurashi, which I don't really think of as a mystery show). The only problem with Death Note is the relatively weak "second half", which is quite good, but pales in comparison to the first portion of the show.
Demon King Daimao (TV) Very good tries to cram too much into too small a space. Everything here is great, but the plot goes way too fast. The characters are fantastic, however (relative to what might be expected for a harem anime), and it feels like the series has set itself up for a wonderful second season, so that's nice.
Denki-Gai (TV) Good
Desert Punk (TV) Very good Energetic, shameless, and a bit over-the-top, Desert Punk nonetheless had a satisfying plot and interesting characters.
Destiny of the Shrine Maiden (TV) Excellent Kannazuki no Miko seemed rather ungainly at first. It's quite a mash-up of genres and themes, and it took some getting used to. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful show, especially the second half.
Detroit Metal City (OAV) Masterpiece An adorably fiendish, gut-bustingly twisted comedy.
(The) Devil Is a Part-Timer! (TV) Excellent
(The) Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie) Masterpiece Perfectly captures the charming qualities the series is renowned for, and simultaneously expands the plot satisfactorily. Not for those who have seen both seasons of the TV series (or read the books, of course), but eminently satisfying for those who have.
Dog & Scissors (TV) Weak
Dog Days (TV) Very good Very cute and unexpectedly wholesome; I was really surprised by the quality of the plot and how much I enjoyed the series generally. I honestly had passed over it in the past because it looked like a very cookie-cutter action-harem series (on the "cute and sweet" side of that spectrum), and I was shocked that I had neglected such an entertaining anime. The fanservice is extremely mild and quite rare, and romance really takes a backseat to the very strong plot and characterizations. The main character is also delightfully strong-willed and energetic, and really belongs in a straight-up shonen action series.
Dog Days' (TV) Very good
Dragon Crisis! (TV) So-so
Dream Eater Merry (TV) Very good A solid supernatural action series with a fairly unique plot and cast. Not the best series of this type around, but nonetheless quite entertaining.
Durarara!! (TV) Excellent Quite entertaining, but doesn't quite live up to the perfectly-crafted insanity of Baccano!. Durarara!! was fun in its own way, though. It was more subtle and slower-paced, and focused more on the characters themselves, rather than their zany antics. If Baccano! is a flash flood, then Durarara!! is a mountain stream: it has its rapids and waterfalls (plenty of them, in fact), but it is ultimately a leisurely, meandering story of unusual people living unusual lives.
Dusk maiden of Amnesia (TV) Very good Very satisfying. Good story, animation, and characters made this one of my favorite series of its season. There is a decent amount of fanservice, but it's fairly high-quality and "tasteful" compared to true fanservice anime.
Eden of the East (TV) Excellent Very good-looking and very well-written, with an intriguing premise and excellent writing. The plot gets a little weird later on in the series, and isn't totally resolved (since their are two sequel films), but I was incredibly entertained the entire time.
Eiken (OAV) Awful In my opinion, Eiken effortlessly crosses the line into "so-bad-it's-good" territory; however, that does nothing to warrant it a higher rating. It just means that the rating I've giving it does not truly reflect its entertainment value. To sum up its charm, Eiken is either the greatest parody or the most grossly excessive example of the very concept of "fanservice" in anime I know of. What little plot it has is a generic harem plot, amusingly abridged by stripping out almost everything that isn't directly connected to a fanservice element. The result is a "story" that is practically invisible to the uninitiated, but serves as a delightful, if unintentional, mockery of the genre to those familiar with more typical examples. Eiken is probably most infamous for the beyond-the-impossible chest measurements of its female characters (this is probably the best piece of evidence towards it beign a parody), but I actually found the hilariously contrived nakedness-inducing "plot devices" to be the funniest part of the show. The mayonnaise slide, in particular, is an absolute riot, if only for its incredible audacity. In summary, I do consider Eiken worth watching, but only with friends; if nothing else, it makes a fantastic drinking game.
Elfen Lied (TV) Masterpiece Very, very, bloody. Many people look at Elfen Lied and can't see past the gore and nudity that abound throughout the show. But I think that it deserves better than that. It is really a touching romance, and the more shocking elements lend a lot of emotional impact to the real story. Don't be turned off by Elfen Lied's reputation; there's a lot more to it than the naked gore-fest it is known for being.
Encouragement of Climb (TV) Decent
Engaged to the Unidentified (TV) Excellent
Escaflowne: The Movie
Eureka Seven (TV) Masterpiece A glorious triumph of character-based storytelling, with the added bonuses of an exciting, dramatic plot and some pretty sick action and animation.
(The) Everyday Tales of a Cat God (TV) Good Much like its main character, a very laid-back series; content to be vaguely cute and periodically funny. Not bad, exactly, but hardly riveting entertainment.
Excel Saga (TV) Very good It's wacky, energetic, and frightfully shallow. Excel Saga may be the silliest anime out there. It's amusing and entertaining, but don't expect anything more than a good laugh.
Fairy Tail (TV) Very good
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) Excellent Very, very well-done. Zero no Tsukaima is not only an interesting and well-written romance/comedy; it has a plot that is deep enough to be satisfying without really getting in the way of the characters and their relationships (that being the main focus of the series).
(The) Familiar of Zero F (TV) Good A satisfying ending for the series, though the story feels a bit awkward and the characters don't really change much (so the annoying harem tropes are still present, and still feel incredibly forced and unnecessary). Obviously a must-see for fans of the past seasons, but don't expect it to redeem the franchise if you haven't enjoyed the previous entries.
(The) Familiar of Zero: Knight of the Twin Moons (TV) Very good Not quite as good as the first season, but entertaining nonetheless. The characters become slightly more annoying, but are funnier as well, so it balances out. The plot continues to exceed expectations.
(The) Familiar of Zero: Rondo of Princesses (TV) Very good About the same as the second season. The romance is weaker, but the plot continues to impress, considering what type of show it is. This season is noticeably funnier, particularly for the first 7 episodes. The second half becomes more serious, and isn't quite as entertaining, but does deliver a decent ending.
Fantasista Doll (TV) So-so
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Decent
FLCL (OAV) Excellent FLCL is one of the best stand-alone OVAs ever made. It's weird, and doesn't make sense all the time, but anybody who considers themself and anime fan should give it a try.
Flying Witch (TV) Very good
Fortune Arterial: Akai Yakusoku (TV) So-so Meh. Bland and uninteresting. The main character isn't exactly bursting with personality, and a slew of annoying one-dimensional side characters did little to help. The plot doesn't have much originality, and the animation and music aren't anything special.
Fractale (TV) Very good
Freezing (TV) Weak A typical example of what I have come to recognize as the "action-fanservice" genre. Freezing was remarkably mediocre; I became quite engrossed in it, but only out of fascination with its endless blundering. The few scenes that had any real potential were all botched horribly, and the action was both generic and sub-par. The fanservice, which was clearly meant to be one of the show's main draws, was low-quality and tasteless, made all the worse by its spectacular abundance. It was far more annoying than arousing, which borders on being impressive in a series containing so much nudity (this is contributed to by the fact that most of said nudity appears in the form of conveniently-placed clothing rips, and is never even mildly sexual). The plot was laughable and by-the-book, and the characters were shallow and unrealistic. Even if someone was in the mood for a series like this, there are so many better alternatives out there that dropping to this level is wholly unnecessary.
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Excellent Full Metal Panic is one of the rare examples of a show that is able to balance romance, action, and comedy well. It's definitely worth watching. Even if you're not particularly fond of it, its worth sitting through so you can see the second and third seasons, which are much better.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) Masterpiece The third season of Full Metal Panic is easily the best. With almost none of the comedy that was found in the first two seasons, these thirteen episodes weave the action and romance together into a single plot covering all thirteen episodes. This season stands out as one of the greatest animes ever made. In particular, it has some of the most emotional moments I have ever seen. In the interest of full disclosure, I will tell you now that TSR gets quite angsty. But, shockingly enough, it manages to do it well, unlike virtually every other anime that has ever tried. It's likely because the characters in TSR really do seem justified in their emotions, and never seem to be over-reacting. Anyway, it's an excellent show. It's worth it to watch the first two seasons just to see this (though the first two seasons are plenty good in their own right).
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (OAV) Excellent This OVA, occuring after the events of the third season, brings the comedy back out and kicks it into overdrive. This is easily as funny as anything Fumoffu has to offer, and the first scene in particular had me unable to breath from laughing so hard.
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) Excellent Fumoffu can be thought of as a break from the more serious first and third seasons. Fumoffu is a comedy, pure and simple, with just a bit of romance added in. It's one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, especially since it doesn't have to waste time introducing characters. Episode nine has the single funniest moment of the entire series.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Masterpiece Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the most popular anime ever made, and it deserves it. It's not the best, but it's damn close. It has an excellent blend of action, drama, and comedy, and also has some of the absolute greatest villains ever. Anybody who enjoys anime owes it to themself to watch this.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) Excellent
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Good A rather disappointing sequel to the TV series. It's not bad, but it feels far too short. I think it should have been created as another season. Also, the ending can be rather...unsatisfying for those who didn't like the ending for the TV series.
Futakoi (TV) Decent Futakoi is a show designed to cater entirely to a specific fetish. There are SIX pairs of twins featured in the show, and all but one of them is romantically interested in the main character (I hesitate to add the loli twins, but the show really gives me no choice). It was an okay show, but single-minded devotion to a particular fetish never turns out well. It also is weighed down by the inclusion of the full array of typical harem tropes. It was entertaining at times, and I don't exactly feel like I wasted my time watching it, but I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone (except for people with an unhealthy obsession with twins).
(The) Future Diary (TV) Excellent
Ga-Rei-Zero (TV) Masterpiece A well-written, well-animated, delightfully gory action flick that also manages to provoke a extraordinarily high level of emotional involvement on the part of the audience. Very intense; highly recommended.
GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class (TV) Good
Gabriel DropOut (TV) Good
Galaxy Angel (TV) Very good
Galaxy Angel A (TV) Very good
Galaxy Angel S (special) Very good
Galaxy Angel X (TV) Very good
Galaxy Angel Z (TV) Very good
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Masterpiece Exquisite. Even though Gankutsuou can be accurately summed up as "The Count of Monte Cristo in FUTURE FRANCE!", it is so well-made that is still warrants watching. This show is a finely-crafted work of art. Not just the animation (which is amazing), but the adaptation of the original story as well. Watch it.
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (TV) Excellent
Genshiken (TV)
Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up (TV) Decent Entertaining, in an odd way, but hardly a work of art. The humor is incredibly vulgar, and jokes are often dragged out far longer than necessary. That being said, the series was more than capable of being genuinely funny on occasion; the jokes weren't bad, just overused. Enma-kun's vulgarity extended to its fanservice, which usually tried to overlap with its humor; near-nudity and blatantly sexual scenes were extremely common. Real action scenes were basically nonexistent, and fights tended to be anything but. Despite being a monster-of-the-week series, Enma-kun managed to last all 12 episodes without much stagnation, in part due to the unconventional nature of most of the "monsters". Ultimately, Enma-kun was a fairly good series that was dragged down primarily by its inability to let go of jokes after it has used them up. Also, it was pretty gross at times, in a childish-toilet-humor sort of way. Bonus points were awarded for a fun opener and the titular character's face, which was very good and conveying emotions ("rage" is especially nice).
Ghost Hunt (TV) Excellent Creepy. Ghost Hunt stands out from the crowd of horror/supernatural animes.
Gingitsune (TV) Decent
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Masterpiece A very nice romance (of sorts), with a strong slice-of-life streak, especially early on. The story is unveiled quite slowly, but has a lot of impact thanks to the excellent build-up. Kind of artsy, but in a good way.
Girl's High (TV)
Girls Bravo (TV) Good Had its moments.
GJ Club (TV) Good
Goku Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (OAV) Masterpiece
Golden Time (TV) Excellent
Good Luck Girl! (TV) Very good
Good Luck! Ninomiya-kun (TV) Good Doesn't stand out, but not bad for a bishoujo show. In particular, Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun does a significantly better job than many of its peers at creating a serious ending to a less-than-serious show.
Gosick (TV) Excellent A mystery series that focuses on the characters, rather than the mysteries; it does a damn good job of it, too. Good in all departments, but the relationships between the characters are definitely where Gosick excels, though its "world-building" is not far behind.
Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl (TV) Excellent A highly unusual bishoujo series, as might be expected from SHAFT. Very nice animation and character designs, an interesting soundtrack, and entertaining, off-beat characters made this one of my favorite series of its season.
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) Masterpiece GTO oscillates between comedy and drama constantly, and does a damn good job of it. I really can think of nothing bad to say about it. Go watch it right now.
Gugure! Kokkuri-san (TV) Excellent
Guilty Crown (TV) Very good Beautifully animated and quite thrilling, but also fairly cliched and a bit lacking story-wise. It's a blast to watch (the action scenes are glorious), but don't expect to be swept up in a highly original, character-driven drama or anything.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Masterpiece A series formed from nothing but the perfectly distilled essence of the shounen genre. The action, animation, and occasional fanservice are all top-notch. In addition, the characters are so far beyond "over-the-top" as to leave most anyone speechless. The climax, though not the "best" I've seen, is probably the most exciting.
H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ (TV) Very good A very good romance. Gets a bit angsty, but it clears up pretty fast, and I doubt there's anyone who wouldn't be touched by the ending.
Haganai (TV) Excellent A delightful bishoujo series. Unusually good characters and great writing, as well as fanservice that isn't very in-your-face, make for a relaxed school-life series with strong humor as well as some pretty good romantic vibes. Highly recommended for bishoujo fans, and even non-fans might be surprise by how good this series is.
Haganai NEXT (TV) Excellent
Hanamaru Kindergarten (TV) Excellent Cuter than a puddle of kittens.
Hanasaku Iroha - Blossoms for Tomorrow (TV) Masterpiece Wonderfully heart-warming, and also very well-animated. The series straddles a delicate line between slice-of-life and drama, and does a damn good job of it.
Happiness! (TV) Weak Animation bad enough that even a casual viewer would easily notice, boring voice acting, and yawn-inducing writing that does absolutely nothing new.
Haré+Guu (TV) Excellent Guu is the best. Plain and simple. This show is worth watching because of her.
Haré+Guu Deluxe (OAV) Excellent Even funnier than the first one.
Haruka Nogizaka's Secret (TV) Very good
Haruka Nogizaka's Secret: Purezza (TV) Decent
Hayate the Combat Butler (TV) Excellent A very well-done comedy. Abounds with wacky characters and stories, and does an excellent job of parodying a wide range of anime and manga. Like other parody shows, it requires a certain level of familiarity with the source material, so newcomers to anime probably won't enjoy Hayate as much as long-time anime fans.
Hayate the Combat Butler!! (TV) Excellent
He Is My Master (TV)
Heaven's Lost Property (TV) Good Better than it might look. Sora no Otoshimono was surprisingly funny at times, and some of the characters were very interesting. Also, the "serious plot developments", something that usually drags bishoujo shows down, were quite well done.
Heaven's Lost Property Forte (TV) Very good I cannot really fault this; it was too entertaining. Rather than simply being perverse, Sora no Otoshimono managed to be quite funny at the same time (something most harem series manage to do poorly at best). In addition, the characters had unusually well-developed personalities, and the animation was spectacular. The plot was extremely good by genre standards, though it did resort to some classic tropes towards the end. This season makes it clear that, with the exception of such (highly unconventional) outliers such as Kannagi or Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, Sora no Otoshimono is at the top of the harem/bishoujo genre; it certainly outclasses everything else that attempts the same level of non-stop fanservice.
Heaven's Memo Pad (TV) Good
Hell Girl (TV) Very good Deliberate, thoughtful, and eerie. Hell Girl is not the sort of show that can be watched all at once. When taken in small doses, it is quite wonderful. Though it is rather repetitive at first, it improves significantly towards the second half of the season. Definitely worth a look.
Hellsing (TV) Very good
(The ")Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat. (TV) Very good
Heroic Age (TV) Masterpiece One of the best sci-fi anime I have ever seen.
Hidamari Sketch (TV) Very good A slice-of-life series that aims more for simmering amusement than wild hilarity (though it does have some of that), and succeeds admirably. Also features many excellent examples of SHAFT's unique visual style.
High School DxD (TV) Good Is quite mediocre at the start, but actually improves significantly in the latter half, with a respectable shounen-style action plot; this is all the more remarkable when one considers how rarely the introduction of genuine plot does anything other than derail series of this sort...
High School DxD New (TV) Decent
High School of the Dead (TV) Very good Put bluntly, HSotD has two priorities: fanservice and zombies, and it does a damn good job with both of them. Feels very much like a classic zombie flick in anime form.
Himawari! (TV) So-so Meh. Doesn't really have anything going for it. Himawari! isn't particularly funny, and doesn't have any action, romance, or other kinds of excitement to make up for that lack. There were some meager signs of plot, but they were left totally undeveloped. The characters were one-dimensional and bland, and the setting lacked both depth and vibrancy.
Himegoto (TV) Weak
Himouto! Umaru-chan (TV) Decent
His and Her Circumstances (TV) Excellent Does a lot of unexpected things. Strange at times, but overall a high-quality romance.

I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying: 2nd Thread (TV 2) Decent
I couldn't become a hero, so I reluctantly decided to get a job. (TV) So-so
I Don't Like You At All, Big Brother!! (TV) Decent Not as lewd as one might expect (still fairly lewd, but by fanservice anime standards it's not THAT bad), and funny enough to get a few laughs out of me. I'd describe it as "silly" before anything else...the fact that ALL the main characters are perverse (each in their own special way!) actually cuts down on the squick one normally gets from a lot of harem series (a lot of which feature a pervy guy and a bunch of pure/sweet/whatever girls), and makes this series into something more along the lines of a wacky comedy about perverts. It's still far from being a work of art, but it's not awful by any stretch of the imagination, assuming you can, er, stomach the premise, of course (and it's all played for laughs, so that's not too hard to do).
If Her Flag Breaks (TV) Bad
Inari Kon Kon (TV) Good
Indian Summer (OAV)
Infinite Stratos (TV) Decent
Infinite Stratos 2 (TV) Decent
Interviews with Monster Girls (TV) Excellent
Inu X Boku Secret Service (TV) Very good Good looking, funny, and fairly original. Notable for having ample amounts of both male- and female-oriented fanservice.
Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san (TV) Decent
Inukami! (TV) Good
Invaders of the Rokujyōma!? (TV) Decent
(The) Irresponsible Captain Tylor (TV) Excellent A bit dated, but highly entertaining.
Is This a Zombie? (TV) Excellent The best new series I've seen since Angel Beats!. An incredible mish-mash of harem tropes, action, comedy, drama, and all sorts of other things. And, somehow, the series manages to pull all that off incredibly well, in part thanks to a perfect level of self-awareness and in part thanks to a very well-written, likeable main character. Despite what it looks like, I would honestly recommend this to just about anyone.
Is This a Zombie? of the Dead (TV) Very good Lacks the "kick" of the first season's plot, and some of the characters are more annoying than in the first season, but it's still funny and highly unconventional. Feels like a "bridge" season, serving to set up a third season which could have more plot and action (like the first season).
Jormungand (TV) Excellent Very unusual. Jormungand feels more like Black Lagoon than anything else, but isn't quite as rambunctious or flashy; Jormungand is more about the interactions between its characters than wild gunfights and explosions (it's a lot like the difference between Durarara!! and Baccano!). It somehow still manages to be unspeakably badass, however, and is hardly without action of its own; its just that said action feels much more controlled and meaningful, often taking such forms as sniping and assassinations.
Joshiraku (TV) Good
Juden Chan (TV) Good This was an interesting experience, to put it lightly. I was certain that it would be some kind of god-awful fanservice series, but as it turns out that isn't entirely the case. Don't get me wrong, the series is filled to the brim with flagrant, utterly shameless fanservice, but the story and characters are, frankly, so adorable and endearing that I didn't really care. Definitely worth watching for anyone who can tolerate (or even enjoy, I suppose) its more off-putting elements.
K-ON! (TV) Excellent Pretty much the epitome of "slice-of-life" in anime. Also despicably cute.
Kamen no Maid Guy (TV) Good
Kamichu! (TV) Excellent Pleasant, easygoing, and adorable. Has some nice romance and plot thrown in as well.
Kamisama Dolls (TV) Very good A very strong (and surprisingly dark) plot, along with quality animation and a good soundtrack, made this a much better series than I was expecting going into it.
Kamisama Kazoku (TV) Very good A cute romance. Has nice pacing, and interesting characters. Some of the side characters can get annoying, but the main characters are very well-written. The story is pretty good as well. It also has a refreshing lack of ecchi.
Kamisama Kiss (TV) Good
Kämpfer (TV) Good
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) Masterpiece Kannagi is one of my favorite shows ever. Nagi is far, far more amusing than I ever thought was possible for what is, by pretty much any measure, a harem series. The other characters are also quite well-done, the fanservice is quite mild, and the humor was incredible. Kannagi is, quite literally, one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I've seen the series 10+ times now, and I'm still left breathless with laughter at many parts throughout the series. There is one episode, in particular, that manages to stretch a single gag for 20 whole minutes and still keep it funny.
Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox (TV) Very good Kanokon is, basically, softcore porn. Or the closest thing to it. It can actually be a pretty interesting show, but you should know what to expect going into it. I ended up being more than a little surprised by how raunchy it is. I knew it was an ecchi show, but calling Kanokon "ecchi" doesn't even begin to describe the extent of its pervy-ness. Kanokon was clearly made for a specific target audience (perverts), so I would only really recommend it to them. Anyone else watching it should go in with a (very) open mind.
Kappa no Kaikata (TV) Good
Karin (TV)
Kasimasi - Girl Meets Girl (TV) Good Kashimashi is okay. Almost everything about the show is quite generic. However, the two things that stand out does so quite a bit. Firstly, the show's "gimmick" is intresting, if not wholly original, and is executed well. Secondly, several of the side characters are very funny, particularly the main character's best friend and the aliens. Overall, it's worth a look at, especially for fans of shoujo-ai (I think it is too tame to really be considered yuri.)
Kasimasi - Girl Meets Girl (OAV) Decent Nothing special. This one-episode OVA wraps up the series. It is best considered as the final episode, rather than a separate thing.
(The) Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior (TV) Very good
Kaze no Stigma (TV) Very good A very typical supernatural action series.
Kekkaishi (TV) Excellent A very solid shounen series. Doesn't exactly break new ground, plot-wise, but definitely stands above the crowd in terms of execution.
Kemeko Deluxe! (TV) Very good A rather off-beat bishoujo-ish show. Feels like a parody half the time, and is hyperactively ridiculous for most of the rest. Very funny if you're familiar with the genre.
KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple (TV) Very good Kenichi is hard to explain. I enjoyed the show immensely, much more than it seems to deserve. It borrows heavily from the collection of generic shounen tropes, and yet somehow manages avoid that "Oh, it's another one of these" reaction that it seems like it should get. Its saving grace is likely its characters, nearly all of whom of whom are much more amusing than you'd expect. Some, such as Kenichi's "worst best friend", are outright hilarious, and give the show a sense of genuine uniqueness.
Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho (TV) Very good Umisho is not a masterpiece by anyone's standard, but its still quite entertaining. It wrings an astonishing amount of humor from its character interactions. (it's also rather pervy, so watch out).
Kill la Kill (TV) Masterpiece
Kill Me Baby (TV) Good Very simple animation and no plot...but consistently amusing, and a great deal of fun.
Kimi ga Aruji de Shitsuji ga Ore de (TV) Decent Not too bad, but certainly nothing special. Kimiaru had its moments, and it did make me laugh a couple times, but I was never really entertained for more than a few minutes at a time. If fanservice is a selling point for you, then this series might have some more appeal, but otherwise it can be safely overlooked.
Kimi ni Todoke - From Me to You (TV) Masterpiece Quite simply, the best shoujo romance I have ever seen.
Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season (TV) Masterpiece A perfectly satisfying conclusion to a wholly excellent series.

Kyo no Gononi (OAV) Excellent
Kyōran Kazoku Nikki (TV) Good Disappointing. This show really had a lot of potential, but it was mostly wasted. The female lead is fantastic and interesting, but the other characters are severely deficient in personality. The plot tends to be either wholly generic or dead boring. It's a pity, really, cause I first watched the show because it looked so unique. It is, in a way, but most of that uniqueness is never put to good use.
Lamune (TV)
Level E (TV) Good There's a lot of good stuff here, but the episodic nature of the series really drags it down. In particular, the excellent relationship between the Prince and the apparent main character is totally wasted, which is a big disappointment.
Leviathan: The Last Defense (TV) So-so
Linebarrels of Iron (TV) Very good
Listen to Me, Girls. I Am Your Father! (TV) Decent The fanservice and accompanying tropes, most prominent in the earlier episodes but present throughout, REALLY drag this series down. Without those, it would be a heart-warming "family bonds" kind of story, along the lines of Usagi Drop.
Living for the Day After Tomorrow (TV) Very good A solid, character-focused series with a very well-executed gimmick.
Love Hina (TV)
Love Hina Again (OAV)

Lovely Complex (TV) Excellent
Lucky Star (TV) Excellent A lot of people say that Lucky Star is "just another one of those moe shows". Don't listen to those people. Lucky Star is very hard to describe, and that is definitely not sufficient. I suppose it is moe-ish, but its moe elements are more of a parody than anything else. Its definitely not something for beginners, but hardcore anime fans should find Luck Star endlessly amusing.
Lucky Star OVA Masterpiece Anybody who likes Lucky Star will love the OVA. It is very funny, and also features the best build-up to a joke ever.
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie) Masterpiece Even having only a passing familiarity with Lupin III, this movie was fantastic. It feels very much like an old adventure movie, along the lines of Indiana Jones.
Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (TV) Excellent
Maburaho (TV)
Magi: The Kingdom of Magic (TV) Very good
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic (TV) Excellent
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (TV) Good The animation feels weirdly dated, and the whole series seems...sparse, somehow. It's hard to describe. The story wasn't very exciting, and I can't really figure out what the draw here is supposed to be...there's no good action, no fanservice, and no other sorts of "simple" forms of entertainment, and yet the characters aren't interesting, the impact of the drama is hurt by that "sparse" feeling I mentioned and by the plain-looking animation, and there's no humor or anything like that...That all being said, though, I can't really say Nanoha was "bad", and the story (eventually) wind its way around to being pretty good.
Magical Play (ONA) Very good Umm....I don't even know what to say. Mahou Yuugi is really, really weird. But, I did like it. It was actually quite amusing. It did take a little getting used to, though.
Magical Witch Punie-chan (OAV) Good Amusing, but not what I would call "high-quality". Good for a few laughs, especially if you like silly gags. The action scenes are too bad, either.
Magikano (TV)
Magimoji Rurumo (TV) So-so
Maid Sama! (TV) Very good
Majikoi - Oh! Samurai Girls (TV) Bad A whole that is noticeably less than the sum of its parts. It wouldn't be /too/ terrible as a more typical harem series; though the female characters get a little annoying with their constant competition over the protagonist, the series still manages to pull off quite a few decent gags. It also wouldn't be bad as an action series; the fight scenes are fairly well-done (better than I expected, certainly), and the plot could actually be pretty good if decoupled from the harem elements. The combination of the two, however, is an utter disaster; this was one of the most painful series I have ever watched, made all the worse by how obviously hard the production team was trying. The cast size stands out as a particularly egregious flaw; it would be considered quite large even for a 26-episode series. For a series this short, its completely ridiculous, and makes it impossible to keep track of or care about anyone but the absolute core cast (who, unfortunately, are not good for anything but the rare joke).
Mangirl! (TV) So-so
MAOYU (TV) Very good
Maria Holic (TV) Very good Very, very funny, which is honestly exactly what should be expected from something Akiyuki Shinbo was involved in. Ignore the summary here on ANN. Despite the main character being a (rather perverted) lesbian, the show has no romance in it, so I don't think it can really be considered yuri, or even shoujo-ai. Its just comedy with a highly unusual setting. Worth watching.
Maria Holic Alive (TV) Very good
Maria Watches Over Us (TV)
Mary and The Witch's Flower (movie) Decent
Masamune-kun's Revenge (TV) Good
Mashiroiro Symphony - The color of lovers (TV) Decent I was totally blindsided by this series; its almost perfectly wholesome, which is basically unheard of in a modern harem series. Seriously, the fanservice is practically nonexistent relative to genre standards, and the focus of the series is, incredible as this may sound, genuinely on the romance between the characters. I'm not saying it's good, exactly (the story and characters aren't /too/ boring, but they are fairly generic), but it was refreshing enough that I enjoyed watching it and happily followed it as it aired.
Mayo Chiki! (TV) Decent Every bishoujo series has to do something halfway-decent to overcome the natural limitations of the genre as it is typically interpreted; Mayoi Chiki! uses better-than-expected humor and a particularly excellent second-tier girl. Nothing else needs to be said.
Mayoi Neko Overrun! (TV) Decent
Medaka Box (TV) Very good A pretty typical (but well-done) school comedy thing at first, but soon enough starts to break down and deconstruct tropes all over the place. Good animation and excellent dialogue back up the interesting plot developments in making this a series well worth watching for those familiar with this sort of series.
Medaka Box Abnormal (TV) Good
Meganebu! (TV) Decent
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Masterpiece Deserves every bit of the hype. I cannot comprehend someone genuinely disliking this show.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal) Very good Definitely good, but the infamous Endless Eight arc really does drag down this season. The other 6 episodes are every bit as good as the first season, though, and Endless Eight itself honestly isn't /that/ bad; it's just that the arc's ending doesn't feel very satisfying, considering the amount of build up before it.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya (ONA) Masterpiece An amusing diversion for fans of the main series.
Midori Days (TV) Very good
Minami-ke (TV) Excellent Very, very funny.
Miss Monochrome (TV) Decent
Mitsudomoe (TV) Very good Immature, lewd, and extremely funny.
Mitsudomoe Zōryōchū! (TV) Good Not quite as relentlessly amusing as the first season, but still fairly good.
MM! (TV) Good The characters are, for the most part, delightfully over-the-top (though they occasionally are taken too far). I was generally entertained; Episode 8, in particular, elicited a great deal of laughter.
Mob Psycho 100 (TV) Very good

Motto To Love Ru (TV) Decent Basically the gold standard for fanservice. Needless to say, the plot and humor are only truly entertaining on occasion.
Moyashimon (TV) Excellent Much, much funnier than the title suggests. Tales of Agriculture is a real gem. Go watch it.
Moyashimon Returns (TV) Good
Murasaki Shikibu The Tale of Genji (movie) Decent
Muromi-san (TV) Good
Mushi-Shi (TV) Masterpiece An incredible feat of world-building, utterly overflowing with atmosphere and originality. Beautiful and relaxing, with a dream-like aura about it. One of the most "artistic" anime around.
Mushibugyō (TV) Decent
My Bride is a Mermaid (TV) Excellent Mermaid yakuza. That is all. But, seriously, this is a great show. It constantly flirts with being just another ecchi/harem show, but it always manages to pull itself back out through pure quirkiness. There's a reason its rated as high as it is.
My Little Monster (TV) Excellent
My mental choices are completely interfering with my school romantic comedy (TV) Very good
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (TV) Excellent
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO! (TV) Very good
My-HiME (TV) Excellent A dramatic action/romance. Anyone who likes either of those genres should definitely watch this.
My-Otome (TV) Excellent Fairly different in overall feel from its predecessor, and rarely in a good way. That being said, it's still an entertaining series.
Myself; Yourself (TV) Excellent
Mysterious Girlfriend X (TV) Good A bit of a oddball, to say the least. If you can get over the obvious grossness (you've probably head, but there's a LOT of drool), then it's not a bad series by any measure...but even ignoring the drool, I can hardly call it a touching romance. It starts moving in the direction in the last three or four episodes, when the heroine (finally) opens up a bit and starts showing some emotions, but until that point she's very distant and "mysterious", and not in an interesting way, so the core of the series (the romance between the two main characters) ends up feeling really dull, and is very hard to relate to. The fact that drool is a central part of their relationship simply aggravates the audience's alienation.
(The) Mystic Archives of Dantalian (TV) Very good The individual episodes are very nice, with a satisfying level of atmosphere, quality animation, and enjoyable characters. However, the lack of a significant, overarching storyline of any sort drags the series down quite a bit.
NAKAIMO - My Little Sister Is Among Them! (TV) So-so
Nanana's Buried Treasure (TV) Good
Naruto (TV) Very good
Natsu no Arashi! (TV) Very good Natsu no Arashi took a while to grow on me, but ended up being the most entertaining thing I've seen in quite a while. It's a little hard to explain, so I will just say that the characters, and their interactions with each other, are utterly delightful.
Natsu no Arashi! Akinai-chū (TV) Excellent Every bit as delightful as the first season.

Nekomonogatari (Black) (TV) Very good
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Very good Ugh. Having finally watched the legendary "Evangelion", my first reaction was, "That's it?" Honestly, most of the show was quite good, but the last group of episodes ruin it completely. Almost nothing is explained properly, and what I assume is supposed to be the climax, in episode 24, is incredibly sloppy. I should have had another episode or two worth of build-up. Interestingly enough, there happen to be two episodes after it that are COMPLETELY WASTED. The actual ending falls flat, being not only confusing, but incredibly dull. Overall, I must acknowledge the quality of the show, and I can see why it was so influential when it first came out...but it simply does not measure up anymore, mostly because of the last 5 or 6 episodes.
New Game! (TV) Very good
Nichijou - My Ordinary Life (TV) Masterpiece The most consistently, excellently funny anime I have ever seen.
Ninja Nonsense (TV) Good
Nisekoi - False Love (TV) Excellent
Nisekoi: (TV 2) Good
Nisemonogatari (TV) Masterpiece No less than what should be expected, considering the fact that this is a sequel to one of the interesting, unique, and wonderful series out there.
No Game, No Life (TV) Excellent
Nobunagun (TV) Very good
Nodame Cantabile (TV) Masterpiece Despite being an excellent romance, the romance itself takes a back seat for much of the series. Rather, the series follows the everyday trials and tribulations of both its main characters and its large supporting cast. Despite the difficulty of pulling off such a wishy-washy premise, Nodame Cantabile does an excellent job of it, mainly due to its strong, multi-dimensional chracters.
Non Non Biyori (TV) Very good
Non Non Biyori Repeat (TV 2) Excellent
Noragami (TV) Very good
Noragami Aragoto (TV) Very good
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Masterpiece A heart-wrenching, haunting, and painfully bleak portrayal of war and human suffering. Very difficult to watch, at times, but ultimately far too beautiful to ignore.
Nyan Koi! (TV) Good
Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! (TV) Good Very entertaining main characters and a silly, high-energy feel left me looking forward to every new episode of this quirky love-comedy.
Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! (TV 2) Good
Nyoron! Churuya-san (ONA) Very good
Occult Academy (TV) Good
Oh! Edo Rocket (TV) Excellent Several thing stand out: first, the unusual setting, which is used to great effect. Second, the incredible inter-weaving of a fairly grim plot with lighthearted comedy (I was honestly surprised at how well this is pulled off). Third, the comedy itself, which makes use of a cast of fairly ridiculous characters, excellent dialogue, and a level of fourth-wall breaking that you have to see to comprehend.
Ōkami-san & Her Seven Companions (TV) Very good
Omamori Himari (TV) Good
One Punch Man (TV) Masterpiece
Oneechan ga Kita (TV) So-so

Oreimo (TV) Good Quite funny, and fairly cute.
Oreimo 2 (TV) Very good
Oreshura (TV) Excellent
Otoboku - Maidens Are Falling for Me! (TV)
Our Home's Fox Deity (TV) Excellent Wonderful and unique.
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Excellent Ouran is hilarious. I know it looks like just another reverse-harem bishounen show, but it is most certainly not. Ouran was one of the first comedy animes I saw, and I still think it is one of the best. I've heard it said the Ouran is really just fan service for girls, but I beg to differ. The characters are extremely well-written and entertaining. I think the over-exaggerated fan service just serves as another source of humor.
Outbreak Company (TV) Very good
Outlaw Star (TV) Very good
Pani Poni Dash! (TV) Excellent Pani Poni is fantastic. It is probably the pinnacle if cheap humor and sight gags. Really, only a corpse wouldn't laugh at it.
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (TV) Excellent A bizarre hybrid of American cartoons, especially ones from the late '90s, and Gainax's trademark high-energy insanity. Very original, and very entertaining. Not for the kids, though.
Paprika (movie) Masterpiece Very, very strange. Paprika is an amazing work of art, and should be seen be everyone. But don't expect it to entirely make sense; the plot is definitely not the main draw here.
Patema Inverted (movie) Excellent
Perfect Blue (movie) Masterpiece
(The) Pet Girl of Sakurasou (TV) Excellent
Petite Princess Yucie (TV) Very good
Pita-Ten (TV) Very good
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie) Excellent
Place to Place (TV) Very good Cute and funny. Gives off a strong feeling of "fluffiness". Don't expect plot or character development, though. This is strictly slice-of-life.
Please Teacher! (TV) Excellent Despite its looks, Onegai Teacher is not really an ecchi show. It really feels more like a proper romance anime, despite a few ecchi elements. This is what other ecchi shows are trying to be.
Please Teacher! (OAV) Excellent Wraps up the series. If you saw the show, you really should watch this too.
Please Twins! (TV) Very good
Please Twins! (OAV) Good
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) Excellent A children's movie, but a very well-made one. The animation is drool-worthy.
Potemayo (TV) Good Quirky, cute, and funny.
Princess Jellyfish (TV) Excellent Unique and satisfying in some hard-to-define way.
Princess Lover! (TV) So-so Ugh. Princess Lover was okay at first, and even showed some promise. Up through episode 7 or so, I was being reasonably entertained by it. But then it succumbed to the worst disease a bishoujo show can catch: plot. Almost half of the show was devoted to a (supposedly) serious plot. Just like nearly every other bishoujo/moe show to have tried to have a real plot, Princess Lover failed miserably. Add to that an incredibly weak ending, and it's easy to see why I consider this one of the overall worst anime I've ever seen, even within an already weak genre.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Masterpiece My favorite Miyazaki film. The plot, characters, and setting are all fantastic.
Problem children are coming from another world, aren't they? (TV) Very good
Psycho-Pass (TV) Excellent
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Masterpiece Probably the greatest example of genre deconstruction ever created. Absolutely brilliant.
Puni Puni Poemy (OAV)
R-15 (TV) So-so A cheap excuse to have softcore porn on TV. Pulls out a funny gag on occasion, but otherwise quite boring. Definitely only worth watching if you're interested in the fanservice (and are honest enough about it to not care about things like "plot" or "characterization").
Ramen Fighter Miki (TV) Excellent
Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (TV) Masterpiece
Read or Die (OAV) Masterpiece An over-the-top action flick. Has good pacing, nice animation, and interesting characters. Go watch it.
Recently, my sister is unusual. (TV) Not really good
Recorder and Randsell (TV) Good For what it is, quite funny. Relies a bit too much on a certain running gag, though.
Recorder and Randsell Mi (TV) Good
Redline (movie) Masterpiece One of the best-looking anime ever, with a unique art style, incredibly good-looking action scenes, and the kind of imaginative, colorful characters and settings which put to best use such technical merit. The story is simple, but very effective (the ending is a bit weird, though), and the characters are all interesting and lively. I would recommend this to anyone.
Renkin 3-kyū Magical? Pokān (TV)
Rental Magica (TV) Good An almost aggressively run-of-the-mill action series, with strong harem overtones. Some episodes were better than others, but for the most part the series was very bland. Watch it if you know you like this sort of thing, but otherwise don't bother.
Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) Masterpiece Utena is one of the hardest to understand animes I've seen. It's very, very good, but you end up having to think a lot about just what the show is about. Even after finishing it, I can't help but think that the entire show was some sort of super-metaphor.
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie Very good
Rideback (TV) Excellent A very good drama. The action is...not so good, but the plot makes up for it. As the second half began, my interest in the series was fading, but the last few episodes managed to dramatically raises my opinion of the whole thing.
RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne (TV) Very good
Rosario + Vampire (TV) Decent
Rosario + Vampire Capu2 (TV) Very good Has a delightful sense of self-awareness, leading to several cases of truly excellent humor in what is otherwise just an above-average harem anime.
Rozen Maiden (TV)
Rurouni Kenshin (TV 1996) Very good
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Excellent
S.A (TV) Good Typical B-grade shoujo, and comfortably on the "silly" side of the genre (as opposed to the serious, angsty side). Recommended for shoujo fans only.
Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend (TV) Very good
Sakura Trick (TV) Good
Samurai Bride (TV) Weak
Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent
Samurai Girls (TV) So-so Bleh. Visually impressive (seriously; the art and animation were great), but otherwise a very typical action-harem series. The fanservice level was extremely high, far past the point at which I found it annoying and distracting, but I know some people like that in a series (I mean, it's pretty damn obvious that this series was made solely for said people). The plot had maybe one or two interesting elements, and was otherwise cliched and yawn-inducing. The characters were boring. The animation however, was excellent, and the art style was unique and interesting, resulting in a number of scenes that at least /looked/ good. Not recommended except to people who, let's be honest, have probably already watched it.
Samurai Harem (TV) Good
Sankarea: Undying Love (TV) Very good An off-beat love-comedy. The animation is good, and the story is unusually strong for a series of this sort. The characters are satisfactory, but nothing extraordinary. Some fanservice, but it feels almost like an afterthought compared to the genuinely good plot.
Sasami-san@Ganbaranai (TV) Very good
Say "I love you." (TV) Excellent
Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) Masterpiece Hilarious. Easily one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Unlike many other comedy animes, Zetsubou Sensei has a decidedly darker brand of humor, with many of the laughs coming from it's cutting social commentary. The characters are all quite twisted, each having a single, exaggerated defect which more or less defines them entirely. The weird characters are quite wonderful, and really make the show shine (or maybe shine is the wrong word in this case.)
School Rumble (TV) Excellent Both the greatest parody and greatest example of the school romance genre.
School Rumble: 2nd Semester (TV) Excellent Everything you know and love from the first season, and more.
Seitokai Yakuindomo (TV) Good Pretty consistently amusing (if you like dirty jokes), but rarely laugh-out-loud funny.
Seitokai Yakuindomo* (TV) Good
Sekirei (TV) Good Not bad. Has an unusually solid plot, for a harem series. In fact, I was annoyed by the fluffy harem comedy stuff dragging the plot down (usually, the reverse is true). The animation was unexpectedly high quality, too. Overall quite satisfying; I was left looking forward to the sequel series eagerly.
Sekirei: Pure Engagement (TV) Good Continues to exceed expectations for a series so full of blatant fanservice. The plot is still solid, but is not cast in a favorable light by the obvious parallels with My-Hime (which has a vastly superior plot featuring similar themes, much more emotional impact, better characters, and more tasteful fanservice.)
Senyū. (TV) Good
Senyū. Dai 2 Ki (TV) Good
Servant × Service (TV) Very good
(The) Severing Crime Edge (TV) Good
Shakugan no Shana (TV) Excellent A very well-made action series; probably the best "magical girlfriend" series around, though it thankfully avoids the seedier elements associated with that genre.
Shakugan no Shana Second (TV) Excellent
Shakugan no Shana-tan (OAV)
Shakugan no Shana-tan Returns (OAV)
She, The Ultimate Weapon (TV) Excellent
Shiki (TV) Masterpiece The best vampire story I've ever seen, heard, or read. Only Dracula comes close, and not coincidentally it is Dracula which Shiki most reminded me of. Unlike every modern vampire story I know of, Shiki portrays its vampires as monsters, mysterious and inhuman creatures who are truly terrifying to ordinary humans. It is somewhat amusing, then, that Shiki ALSO outperforms those "other" vampire stories at those times when it chooses to make us feel empathy for its vampires. Shiki's back-and-forth portrayal of its vampires, both as "terrifying monsters" and "tortured souls", is truly incredible, and makes them feel far more complex and compelling, both as villains and as victims, than any other vampires out there. Everything Shiki does is like this: the series is at times creepy, at times tragic, philosophical, funny, cheerful, etc. The mood swings help bring the large cast to life, and make the village Shiki is set in feel much more realistic. The characters themselves are also very well-written, and good voice acting (in the sub, at least) amplifies the effect. The viewer comes to know a remarkably large number of characters, which is highly unusual for a mere two-season anime but is pulled off brilliantly in this case. In short, Shiki was a unique and amazing series, and I would recommend it highly to most anyone.
Shuffle! (TV) Decent
Shugo Chara! (TV) Excellent Shugo Chara is quite an interesting show. Despite being hopelessly tied down by several tropes of the magical girl genre, it manages be quite addictive and entertaining. The interesting characters and plot easily overcome the flaws. Buto don't be mistaken, there are many flaws. For one thing, Shugo Chara features a rather blatant reverse harem, which teeters on the edge of absurdity on more than one occasion. Also, the show features a terrifying amount of wince-inducing Engrish, and has the endlessly repeated transformation sequences so central the the genre. Despite the flaws however, Shugo Chara still comes through as a show that is definitely worth watching, as it does manage to throw off enough of its genre baggage to create a lively, original, and thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience.
Silver Spoon (TV) Excellent
Silver Spoon (TV 2) Excellent
Sin Strange Plus (TV) Good
Skip Beat! (TV) Excellent The first real shoujo anime I ever saw, and still one of the best. The main character is very, very entertaining. The only really downside to the series is the fairly open ending, which (in my experience) leaves viewers wanting more.
So I Can't Play H (TV) Good
Softenni! (TV) Good Amusing and entertaining, but lacking in substance. Not bad as a slice-of-life series, though the occasional bit of fanservice did give it a weird vibe.
Sola (TV) Excellent An excellent romance. Proof that a show can heavily borrow generic elements without being the least bit generic. In pretty much all respects, Sola is a little bit different from what you might expect.
(il) sole penetra le illusioni ~ Day Break Illusion (TV) Good
Soul Eater (TV) Excellent Highly entertaining characters (especially the villains!), an exciting and interesting plot, mind-blowing animation, and a fantastic soundtrack leave me with absolutely nothing to fault.
Sparrow's Hotel (TV) Decent
Spice and Wolf (TV) Masterpiece
Spice and Wolf II (TV) Masterpiece
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent One of Miyazaki's best films. Has an excellent story, but its worth watching just to drool at the animation quality.
Squid Girl (TV) Excellent Quirky and fun. The closest thing I know of to a Yotsuba&! anime.
Squid Girl Season 2 (TV) Very good More of the same. Gets a little bit boring after a while, but remains quite capable of pulling out some decent humor.
Steins;Gate (TV) Excellent
(The) Story of Saiunkoku (TV) Excellent A delightful example of good shoujo. Has one of the best heroines ever (the competition for that title being Kyoko from Skip Beat! and Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke). Saiunkoku also has likable characters in general, and a well-developed setting. The opening and ending themes are both fantastic enough to warrant mention on their own, and the animation, while not truly outstanding, is nonetheless quite good.
Strange+ (TV) Good
Strawberry Marshmallow (TV) Masterpiece Strawberry Marshmallow is pretty much the definition of "slice of life". It doesn't really "go" anywhere, it just spins in little circles being whimsical. It can be very slow-paced, and I wouldn't really call it a comedy. It can be very, very funny, but its not as focused on constant humor as Azumanga, for example. There are several whole episodes with only one or two gags in them. But, when Strawberry Martshmallow tries to be funny, it succeeds admirably. It has many of the funniest scenes I've seen, so its definitely worth watching if you enjoy comedy. Just be prepared for the more easy-going parts as well.
Strawberry Marshmallow (OAV) Masterpiece
Strawberry Panic! (TV) Good A yuri romance series, with a noticeable amount of fanservice. The main relationship has a surprisingly good story arc, but the side-stories are pretty boring. Yuri fans should check this out, but everyone else could probably find a much more entertaining series to spend their time on.
Strike the Blood (TV) Very good
Strike Witches (TV) Good I found this series incredibly amusing; the (more or less) serious plot conflicts utterly with the rampant pantlessness of the cast, giving it a sort of otherworldly atmosphere such as one might find in a dream or a particularly artsy satire.
Student Council's Discretion (TV) Excellent I was extremely surprised by how good this series was the first time I saw it. It's very funny, with good characterizations, and has an unexpectedly cute ending which left me wanting more. Definitely worth checking out.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes (TV) Decent
Tayutama - Kiss on My Deity (TV) Weak Disappointing. This show really had my interest for a while. The first couple episodes seemed to be really trying something a little outside the norm for a bishoujo anime. Unfortunately, this trend did not persist, and Tayutama went downhill from there. Though it kept up a few small bits of originality, the vast majority of the show became hopelessly generic. The last two episodes in particular were pathetic. Tayutama has one of the weakest endings of any anime I've ever seen. Really, it was extremely sad. Not sad like "Oh, how heartwrenching." It was the "I'm going to die of embarrassment at how bad this is," sort of sad. Definitely not recommended to any but the most single-minded bishoujo fans.
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992) Excellent The first, and the best. Tenchi Muyo is the show that kicked-off the harem genre, later popularized by shows like Love Hina and Shuffle. But Tenchi Muyo completely blows the competition away. Not only are the characters unique, but the humor is genuinely funny. I would recommend this to anyone, even those who normally avoid harem shows.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki (OAV 3/2003) Good
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994) Excellent
Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival (OAV) Masterpiece Tenchi Muyo at its best. This short OVA really shows what it is that makes the show so funny.
(The) Testament of Sister New Devil (TV) Not really good
Tiger & Bunny (TV) Very good Very entertaining. A Western-style superhero story in anime form. The story is original and quite satisfying, the characters are pretty good, and the non-CG animation is quite nice. Unfortunately, there's a lot of CG, which, while not terrible by anime standards, stands out too much and can be pretty ugly.
To Love Ru: Darkness (TV) Good
To Love Ru: Darkness (TV 2) Good
To Love-Ru (TV) Very good Better than average for this sort of show. To Love-Ru doesn't pretend to be anything other than a rather shameless harem show, but nonetheless it did manage to entertain me quite a bit. It does have far, far more ecchi than it needs, but it also has (some) rather inspired comedy. There were a few episodes that were actually somewhat original, which is rare in this genre. In summary, To Love-Ru is noticeably better than many of its peers, but is still trapped within its genre. Harem/bishoujo fans will probably enjoy it, and others may find it interesting as well.
To Love-Ru (OAV) Good
Tokimeki Memorial ~Only Love~ (TV) Not really good Utterly, impossibly, irredeemably dull. Watching Tokimeki is like chewing flavorless gum. It's there, you can feel it, but it has no taste and doesn't really catch your interest. After a while, it starts to toughen up, and you really have to force yourself to keep chewing. It's not that Tokimeki is bad, per se, it just does nothing to stand out. The only really interesting character is one of the teachers, and he doesn't show up very often. Everyone else is horribly bland.
Tokyo Godfathers (movie) Masterpiece
Tona-Gura! (TV) Good
Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time (TV) Very good
Toradora! (TV) Excellent Toradora is one of the best romances I've ever seen. The characters all have well-developed personalities, and are much more realistic and multi-faceted than the casts of most similar shows. In addition, Toradora avoids falling into the cliches and tropes that almost all high school romance anime end up trapped in. Definitely worth watching.
Trigun (TV) Masterpiece Trigun is a classic for a reason. I cannot place it within any particular genre. It's funny, it's sad, it's upbeat, it's serious. It is one of the most well-rounded shows I've seen. I would recommend it to anyone. It's a great "starter anime".
Trinity Seven (TV) Decent
(The) Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura (TV) Good
True Tears (TV) Masterpiece
tsuritama (TV) Excellent
Tsuyokiss - Cool×Sweet (TV) Weak Rather dull. Tsuyokiss can't seem to decide whether it's a crappy shoujo romance or an extremely crappy bishoujo fanservice anime.
UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie (TV) Decent
Un-Go (TV) Very good A unique atmosphere, interesting visuals, and solid characters make Un-Go a well-rounded and enjoyable series.
Unlimited Fafnir (TV) Not really good
Upotte!! (ONA) Decent Somewhat funny, decent (but a bit uncommon) fanservice, plot that varies from "almost kinda good" to "bland". The girls-are-guns thing is definitely unique, and the best humor is usually connected to this, but that doesn't really make the series any better. Might be worth watching, but don't expect too much.
Uta∽Kata (TV) Good A interesting story, but very rough around the edges.
Valvrave the Liberator (TV) Good
Vampire Knight (TV) Excellent Well-written and well-animated. Overdoes the angst on occasion, but that's a matter of taste. The show was good enough that I ended up watching the entire season in a single day.
Vampire Knight Guilty (TV) Excellent Continues where the first season left off. The animation and writing quality remains high, and several unexpected twists stave of any sort of boredom. The ending isn't quite satisfactory, but it does wrap up the story in an acceptable manner. Overall, a slight improvement on the first season.
Vandread (TV)
Vandread: The Second Stage (TV)
Venus to Mamoru (TV) Good Surprisingly innocent. I was really drawn in by how sweet and wholesome the main romance was. It also has some decent action scenes. But really, its the characters that make this show. They're all great. Worth checking out.
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Very good
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Good
Wagnaria!! (TV) Very good A well-animated comedy centered on a very strong cast; the humor has a "sitcom" feel to it, being derived from the everyday interactions of the quirky characters. Extremely funny.
Wagnaria!!2 (TV) Excellent A fantastic sequel to the first season.
Wagnaria!!3 (TV) Very good
Waiting in the Summer (TV) Excellent A wonderful romance series, with a great sense for melancholy and simple happiness, and no obvious flaws. As a side note, this series is, in effect, a (semi-)covert spinoff of Onegai Teacher; I really enjoyed being able to pick up on the various references and to just generally bask in the nostalgia.
Walkure Romanze (TV) So-so
(The) Wallflower (TV) Very good An offbeat comedy with an eye towards a female audience.
Wandering Son (TV) Masterpiece An incredibly mature, thoughtful, and realistic portrayal of its characters easily sets Hourou Musuko apart from just about every other anime. It really is unique, and I recommend it highly.
WATAMOTE (TV) Very good
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Very good
When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace (TV) Very good
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) Masterpiece You may know of Higurashi as "that creepy show with the killer lolis". That doesn't quite describe it. The fun of watching Higurashi comes from the extreme levels of suspense and anxiety it creates. Higurashi is split into a series of short arcs, four or five episodes apiece. Each arc begins normally, with the characters going about their everyday lives. Over the course of the arc, one of the characters slowly goes insane, usually resulting in violence. After the climax of the arc, everything "resets" for the next arc. Some of the stories are unsettling, others disturbing, but they are all creepy, and a few are truly frightening. This is definitely a show best watched all alone in a dark room.

(The) World God Only Knows (TV) Good Interesting at first, and funny throughout, but dragged down by a lack of broad narrative and character development. The annoying spate of musical montages single-handedly kept the series from a "Very Good" rating.
(The) World God Only Knows Season Two (TV) Excellent A significant improvement over Season 1. The last two story arcs in particular were much better than anything Season 1 had to offer.
