Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter (OAV) Weak Saw this dubbed on TV a long time ago...I remember a few of the lines though. "Did you feel that? I just ripped out your optical nerve!"
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Need to see again before I rate it.
Gunbuster (OAV) Good
Gunbuster 2: Diebuster (OAV) Excellent One of the few sequels that, in my opinion, surpasses the original (although the second Patlabor movie comes to mind as well). This anime goes far, far over the top, but the surprisingly realistic characters, along with the amazing direction of Kazuya Tsurumaki, keep it grounded.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Very good
.hack//SIGN (TV) Decent
Haibane Renmei (TV) Excellent
His and Her Circumstances (TV) Excellent
Honey and Clover (TV) Very good
Honey and Clover II (TV) Very good
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Very good
Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade (movie) Masterpiece A solumn, subtle work, with beautiful animation and music. It's a slow, brooding tragedy, and it never veers into melodrama.
Kill Bill Chapter 3: The Origin of O-Ren (movie segment) It was part of a movie. I really don't see a need to rate it.
Kino's Journey (TV) Excellent
Last Exile (TV) Good
Last Order Final Fantasy VII (OAV) Weak
(The) Melody of Oblivion (TV) Decent
Millennium Actress (movie) Masterpiece Satoshi Kon's finest work, a multi-layered story with both pathos and humor, in which neither feels forced. The characters which populate the film's world are humans, not archetypes. Truly like no other anime I have ever seen.
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Very good
Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water (TV) Very good
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Excellent
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Masterpiece Despite its flaws, Anno's Evangelion remains a both a meaningful character study (of its many three dimensional characters) and a riveting drama. The direction and script writing are superb throughout, and the tension in the show's action sequences never feels artificial.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Good Death (which is really all I'm rating here) is often referred to as worthless, a cash-in, or at worst, incomprehensible. The style in which Masayuki and Akio Satsukawa made this compilation movie is unique, to my knowledge. They took the Eva series (the first 24 episodes, at least) and edited it down to an hour. To do this, they removed the plot. Entirely. Events are now entirely out of sequence, and the organization revolves around portraits of each of the characters instead. I think that this was an interesting route, and thus gave it a higher score than many.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Masterpiece A disturbing, disgusting, and harsh display of human emotion, set against the backdrop of the apocalypse. Anno's direction communicates subtly, despite the spectacles portrayed so strikingly throughout, with fluid, detailed animation and uncanny, sometimes subversive use of music.
Noir (TV) Decent
Otaku no Video (OAV) Good
Other Worlds (movie) Good
Otogi Zoshi (TV) Decent
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Very good
Paprika (movie) Masterpiece Kon's surreal thriller, with its dazzling animation and unsettling imagery, is one of the most daring films I've seen in years. CG is used throughout, but without becoming distracting. It moves a little quickly, at times leaving the audience behind, but the characters feel more human each time I see the film.
Paranoia Agent (TV) Masterpiece Can I always explain what's real and what's imagined in this TV series from director Satoshi Kon? No. I was never bored, though. The animation was some of the best I've seen in a TV series, and the character designs very distinctive and fitting.
Patlabor 2: The Movie (movie 2) Very good
Patlabor: The Movie (movie 1) Good
Perfect Blue (movie) Excellent
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie) Very good
Porco Rosso (movie) Very good
Princess Mononoke (movie) Masterpiece My favorite Miyazaki film, Princess Mononoke refrains from relating a didactic "message" and shows the complexities of the relationship between humans and nature. Additionally, this film contains the always high quality animation of Studio Ghibli, beautiful forest backgrounds, and Joe Hisaishi's best score to date.
RahXephon (TV) Very good
RahXephon (OAV) Good
RahXephon: Pluralitas Concentio (movie) Decent
Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise (movie) Masterpiece A spirit of youthful ambition gave birth to Studio GAINAX, and that spirit runs throughout this, their first work. An intricate alternate world lies background to two of anime's most realistically flawed leads. Every scene subtly works towards the film's awe-inspiring climax.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Very good
She and Her Cat (OAV) Good
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Very good
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent
Starship Operators (TV) Decent
Steamboy (movie) Decent
Texhnolyze (TV) Excellent
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (TV) Not really good
Tokyo Godfathers (movie) Very good
Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer (movie 2) Good
Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan (movie) So-so
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Masterpiece This short film by Makoto Shinkai could have easily been melodratic, sappy, and trite. However, Shinkai directs with youthful sincerity instead of pretension. This alone is worthy of the rating I have awarded, regardless of the astounding fact that Shinkai animated this work by himself!
Wolf's Rain (TV) Good
Wolf's Rain (OAV) Good
Xenosaga: The Animation (TV) Weak
