Appleseed (movie) Very good
Appleseed: Ex Machina (movie) Good
Baccano! (TV) Masterpiece A top favorite of mine, this series leaves you with your mouth watering for more. With a huge cast of characters and a plot that jumps around between different parts of the story, it can be a little confusing and a bit intimidating at first, however it doesn't take long to get into and repeat viewings are fun since you're bound to notice things you didn't the first time around. Baccano!'s strengths are the diverse cast of characters, the high energy and craziness, and the unique method of revealing the plot which I found to be truly ingenious. The animation could have been a bit better perhaps, but it was still of very high quality.
Basilisk (TV) Good
Bleach (TV) So-so
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Good
Clannad (TV) Good
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Excellent
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Excellent
Corpse Princess: Aka (TV) So-so
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece Perhaps this series is overrated, but it simply excels in every aspect, it's hard not to recognize it as a masterpiece. Characters, plot, animation, soundtrack, setting - beyond a couple of relatively uninteresting episodes, this series has no weak points.
Death Note (TV) Very good
Den-noh Coil (TV) Good Throughout this show, I couldn't figure out who the target audience really was. While it was fun to watch the kids and their hijinks, there were elements of the story that seemed targeted to older viewers. The animation and color palette was very enjoyable and the story was entertaining, however one particular aspect of the ending was simply far too cheesy for me.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Good This series started off strong: suspenseful, exciting, and cool. The ending, however, wasn't very strong and sort of fizzled out for me. Overall a cool series with interesting characters though.
FLCL (OAV) Excellent Who needs drugs when you have FLCL! Great animation, music, and comedy, and a plot which at first appears to be insane and non-sensical but actually tells a more serious story about a boy coming of age.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Excellent Fullmetal goes way above and beyond your typical shounen action series. Despite the latter portion deviating from the manga it remains very high quality throughout. The only thing that kept me from rating masterpiece are the numerous plot holes and irrational decisions the characters sometimes make.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Very good The movie provides a nice conclusion to the series with solid movie quality animation. I had to rate it lower than the series since some aspects of the story were very weak (such as the antagonist's motive near the climax). I also thought some of Ed's actions and reactions were a bit weak.
Genshiken (TV) Decent
Genshiken 2 (TV) Very good
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Very good
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Excellent
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Masterpiece
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) Excellent
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Excellent A very touching slice-of-life/romance/sci-fi. I would recommend this title to just about anyone.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Decent
Gravitation (TV) Weak While extremely popular with yaoi and shounen-ai fans, Gravitation was too flawed to be truly enjoyable. For being centered on a character who is trying to make a name for himself as a singer, it wasn't very impressive musically. Shuichi performs the same song for about half the series, and when he finally comes out with new songs they all sound so similar it doesn't make much of an impact. My major complaint is that the central relationship is hardly developed. Just /why/ is it Shuichi loves Yuki so much? Why does Yuki (the seme) fall for him besides finding him cute? Yuki was such an enigma throughout the entire show, but when his past is finally revealed and he gets some actual character development, I didn't find his history to be all that interesting or intriguing.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Very good
Hellsing (TV) Good
Kaze to Ki no Uta SANCTUS -Sei naru kana- (OAV) Good
Macross Frontier (TV) Decent
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV) So-so Though I'm sure I missed many of the specific references in this show, it still gave me plenty of laughs. They even went so far as to parody the music as well. However, despite the laughs, I ranked this one low because the basic story didn't catch me. I can't say what it was about the underlying plot, but I simply found it uninteresting.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Excellent
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) Masterpiece One of the best series in recent times. The characters were all so believable and Balsa was a refreshing change from standard anime heroines. One of the things that particularly attracted me is that while there are antagonists of the story, you can't actually call them "bad guys". Everyone is simply doing what they believe is right. Even the creatures at the end, while terrifying, are simply carrying out an important biological task. The only disappointment for me was the first few episodes set up the story to be a journey across the country, but instead that comes to a screeching halt and the story becomes episodic until the end. However, every episode was so beautifully excecuted and interesting, it's hard to fault the series for this.
Mushi-Shi (TV) Excellent
Naruto Shippūden (TV) Decent
Ninja Scroll (movie) So-so
Nodame Cantabile (TV) Excellent This show kept a silly grin plastered to my face for about the first 10 episodes but remained entertaining and endearing throughout. I was particularly satisfied with how they chose to anime the ensembles using mostly stills for wider shots and CG for the closer shots focused on movement. The only thing that kept me from rating this excellent was I felt plot moved unnaturally in the middle and some characters were severely pushed to the sidelines. An instant recommendation for other musicians and others as well though.
Nodame Cantabile: Paris (TV) Excellent Continues with the same excellence as the first season. Still plenty of laughs, but I got most excited over Noda and Chiaki's musical endeavors. Scenes of the full orchestra were rendered in CG this time. It works most of the time but ended up looking a bit silly sometimes. Definitely leaves you anticipating the next season.
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Very good
Paranoia Agent (TV) Good I rated this one "good" since I can't make up my mind if it's pure brilliance or just a bunch of nonesense. It was certainly entertaining and each episode had something new. Good English dub.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Good
Princess Resurrection (TV) Not really good This series completely missed the mark. The first few episodes provided some good laughs, however later in the series the show took itself too seriously and instead of making fun of itself and its characters it tried too hard to be an actual action/horror show.
Real Drive (TV) Decent
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Masterpiece
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) So-so This was a tough one to rate. The animation and visuals were top notch, but the story was just so unbelievably bad. Also, the main theme that opens the movie is used over, and over, and over again throughout. I tend to like Kenji Kawaii's scores, but the lack of variety was rather annoying. The plot is pretty weak, and I was asking myself, "what is this movie about" right up until the end. Perhaps some people would deem that a positive quality, however instead of keeping me in suspense it was just an annoyance.
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent
(The) Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk (TV) So-so
Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations (OAV) Very good
Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE (TV) Good
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Excellent It's humbling to see a show about yourself, but that is perhaps one of the greatest attributes of this series. The only marks I have against this series is some poor animation in places and overuse of certain songs in the soundtrack (soundtrack was phenomenal otherwise).
