Ah! My Goddess (TV) Very good Ah! My Goddess is one of those series that really makes me want to be in the main character's shoes. The anime is extremely entertaining; especially the first few episodes. The characterization, premise, and soundtrack are some of the series' strong points. The only obvious negative to the show is later episodes start to feel like something out of the harem genre.
Akira (movie) Excellent
Angel Beats! (TV) Very good Angel Beats! tells an interesting story that succeeds in immersing the viewer. The story takes place in a sort of Purgatory-esque world. This setting really sets a unique mood for the series. If the series has a fault, it's its length. At only around 13 episodes, parts of this very intriguing feel like they could have been expanded upon to improve pacing.
Another (TV)
Baccano! (TV) Masterpiece Baccano! succeeds on many levels. The music and sound are superb, and the opening theme alone is quite a masterpiece. The story and setting are amazing and will continually surprise you. Nothing about the anime is predictable and the viewer is kept guessing throughout most of the storyline. Story telling is another area where Baccano! excels. The story is told out of order, with fragments of the narrative spanning around four years. The other thing to note about Baccono!, is that its dub is really good, which is pretty rare in my opinion.
BioHunter (OAV) Not really good
Bleach (TV) Good If Bleach were terrible, it's viewership wouldn't be as high as it is. That being said, the show has really taken a dive recently (if recently is anything after season 3). Still, the enjoyable aspects of the series (mainly the friendship dynamic between Ichigo and Rukia) land this anime a good rating. I'm not sure if it would actually be possible to give it a good ending at this point, mainly because the relationships between characters are never consistent. Also, several of the voices in the dub are ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Unfortunately, I also dislike Ichigo's voice in the sub, and therefore I have a problem watching it period.
Chrono Crusade (TV) Good Chrono Crusade is a entertaining anime with a few pitfalls. Obviously I don't watch anime for realism, but for an anime that tried to depict a historical setting, this anime failed in every way. For one, the Catholic Church is seen holding great authority with law enforcement in the 1920's. If you know anything about the way the Catholic Church was viewed in the 20's, you would see this as the most laughable thing ever as there was a political party at the time (the Know-Nothing Party) who held Catholic hating as one of their main tenants. Even overlooking this, this anime still fails to be utterly exceptional at any point, but overall, I still feel comfortable saying this is a good anime and worth watching if you are into 20th century historical revisionism favoring the Catholic Church.
Clannad (TV) Very good Clannad is one of the greatest Slice-Of-Life anime. The characterization is good, if not always completely realistic. The other aspects of the series as quite good as well. The animation is really crisp and the ending theme for the series is very memorable. The series suffers from a bad dub; however, if that's the only way you watch anime, it shouldn't take you too long to get used to it.
Clannad After Story (TV) Masterpiece The second season of Clannad tells an absolutely breathtaking story that proves that you don't need a fantasy world with magic and overpowered characters to create a brilliant story. The thing that makes this anime, is that it gives us a relatable story about a guy trying to find his place in the world.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Masterpiece Code Geass is amazing. It is so refreshing to see a shonen-esque character in a series that isn't a total idiot. The story will keep you on your toes, while the rest of the experience is equally great. The show has a few pacing problems and plot holes, but otherwise, you would be hard pressed to find better.
Dance in the Vampire Bund (TV) Good Dance in the Vampire Bund is kind of like what Twilight would be if you reversed the genders. And made it sort of loli. And made it not suck. This anime looses some points for not being amazing and also not making sense 100% of the time. Still, if you need something to watch with good animation and a decent storyline and you like vampires or werewolves, DITVB is a pretty good choice.
Death Note (TV) Excellent Death Note is very exciting ride and one of the best entries in it's genre. The show features a protagonist that not all viewers will feel comfortable rooting for. The characters and deep, thought provoking plot make this anime extremely entertaining. It's only real faults lie in its second season, which I will refrain from elaborating on to avoid spoilers.
Desert Punk (TV) Very good Desert Punk is a solid post-apocalyptic anime. The setting will be familiar to fans of the genre, but the Great Kanto Desert also holds its own quirks that make the series a lot of fun. The main character is kind of annoying, but also endearing in a way. The series suffers from some bad voice acting and a controversial ending. Still, Desert punk is still worth watching.
(The) Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie) Masterpiece "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya " is utterly mind-blowing. Even my extremely lofty expectations for the movie were exceeded beyond belief. The movie's strengths come from the character development for the character Kyon who plays an even larger part in this movie then he did in the series.
Dragon Ball (TV) Good Dragon Ball gets props for pretty much inventing the modern Shonen genre as it is today. Depending on what you think of Shonen anime that could be a really good thing or a dreadful horrible thing. Either way, Dragon Ball is an interesting piece of anime's evolution and pretty entertaining if you have the time to watch its many episodes.
Eden of the East (TV)
Elfen Lied (TV) Excellent Elfen Lied is without a doubt the most controversial anime in existence. I have heard that it is the greatest and worst anime ever from different people. I personally find it to be entertaining, however there are many who disagree. Critics of the series usually point to the overdone moe elements and gory and provocative nature of the series as reasons for it to be avoided. I will agree that the moe elements are often out of place, but the series as a whole really only fails to reach the highest level of extraordinary due to its ending. The gore is something that you need to ignore if it bothers you, as it really has nothing to do with the content of the series.
FLCL (OAV) Weak
Freezing (TV) Not really good
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Masterpiece There isn't much not to like about FMA. The series has amazing voice acting for both the sub and dub. The setting should seem familiar to western audiences, but at the same time is like nothing you've ever seen before. The characters are amazing in almost every way, especially Ed and Al who are two of the greatest characters in anime period.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Very good Conqureror of Shamballa is the sequel the first FMA series. It is a gross departure from the manga and is very controversial due to some of the movie taking place in Germany. I am personally fine with this, but it was sort of a strange move. However you feel about the direction of the movie's storyline, the movie is still entertaining and worth watching if you've seen FMA.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) So-so
Gurren Lagann (TV) Excellent Gurren Lagann is, without a doubt, one of the greatest anime out there. The series constantly throws the viewer references to the super robot genre anime of the late 70's. The animation, pacing, and characterization of the series are its strong suits and it plays on them well. This is anime not to be missed.
Heaven's Lost Property (TV) Good Heaven's Lost Property represents the continuing shift of anime to include comedic elements within a series. The anime is interesting and has a decent premise. The characterization is fair considering every character is an archetype. The style is clearly harem, but it does a good job of occasionally progressing the story.
Heaven's Lost Property Forte (TV) Good See first season comments
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Masterpiece "Howl's Moving Castle" lives up to the Studio Ghibli hype better than most of their films. The setting in this movie is what earns in a masterpiece rating in my book. The world is truly original while still managing to utilize elements found in other films made by their studio as well as Disney. The characters in the film are likeable and like other Studio Ghibli films, the animation and sound are wonderful.
Inuyasha (TV) Very good Inuyasha is a one of the better super long shonen epics. What makes Inuyasha stand out from its shonen brothers is that the series knows exactly what it is and where it should go. Instead of fights that go on for episodes, and frequent boring narratives, the show gives us episodic episodes that make it so each episode is enjoyable and keeps us from wondering why it's necessary for us to sit and watch three episodes of one fight between minor characters. In addition to this, the show has interesting, multidimensional characters that cause you to really start to care what happens to them. It also features my favorite ending theme, Fuki Mori.
Is This a Zombie? (TV) Decent
Kämpfer (TV) So-so
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) Excellent Kiki's Delivery Service is a very entertaining film with a strong protagonist and an interesting storyline. The animation and soundtrack meet Studio Ghibli's lofty standard. The setting of the film, although interesting, good be considered a weak point as it isn't quite as compared to the really fantastic settings of other movies out the studio it doesn't inspire the same magical feeling.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Masterpiece This is my favorite anime hands down. The characters. The music. The twists. Kyon's narration. Haruhi's eccentricity. And so much more. This anime is amazing on so many levels. It made me want to be a part of the SOS Brigade, and take part in their adventures in way that no other series has. The voice acting and animation are top notch. The voice for Kyon in the dub is absolutely fantastic.
Naruto (TV) Good Naruto is a decently entertaining anime. The show gets extra points for eventually setting up the far better Naruto Shipudden. Overall this anime's sound, voice acting, and storyline are pretty good. The setting is also a fantastic aspect of the anime. The ninja theme works very well for the series along side the excellent original elements to the story such as the eastern-style magic that is jutsu.
Naruto Shippūden (TV) Very good Naruto Shippuden does everything Naruto did right and fixes a lot that it did wrong. The series takes a far more serious tone with Shippuden and this goes on to improve the storyline tremendously. It should also be noted that this change in tone makes the characters a lot less annoying. It's not really that their personalities have been changed, but the change in tone makes Naruto and Sakura especially less irritating. The animation and lackluster fight scenes from the original series have also been improved in Shippuden. The animation is now crisp and later fight scenes have better pacing. The antagonists are also a lot more interesting, as are their motives.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Excellent This movie is a gem. Although a bit dated now, the film's story is fantastic. Created by the people who would go on the form Studio Ghibli, you can tell that this movie was created by individuals that would go on to be legends in the Japanese animated film industry.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Excellent NGE inspires debate whenever brought up. In fact the only anime that might be more controversial is Elfen Lied. The anime in many ways, is the most influential of its time. Overall, I really like NGE with the possible exception of its ending. I could sit and talk all day about the strengths and weakness this anime features, but that would take at least as lengthy essay.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Excellent Ah, EOE. An movie that managed to be almost as baffling as the end of the series. The movie continues to prove that when the reboot of evengelion movie series comes to an end, it will probably be just as utterly unexpected and confusing as the NGE and EOE.
Ocean Waves (movie) Very good Ocean Waves is a Studio Ghibli Side project. This makes it very different from their other films, but also shows the studio's depth. The storyline and characters are interesting and multidimensional. The genre of the film is a drama set in Japan. The fact that this movie has somewhat of an ordinary setting is signifigant. as most of Studio Ghibli's settings are strongly influenced by western fantasy. Although it may not quite compare with Studio Ghibli's best, this anime is still well worth your time.
Oreimo (TV) Very good Oreimo is a solid Slice-of-Life anime based on the lives of a boy and his otaku sister. If you like Slice-of-Life, chances are you will enjoy this anime. For what it is, it has really strong characters and well-paced episodes which is primarily what gets it a good rating.
Porco Rosso (movie) Masterpiece I might hold the minority opinion rating this film as a masterpiece. Still, I still think this one of the greatest films Studio Ghibli has ever made. It has all of the good aspects of their other films, while adding as quasi-historical setting where the main character is a pig that flies around in airplane circa WWII. Who doesn't like that?
Princess Mononoke (movie) Very good Many may disagree with this movie's placement, but in many ways this film is not as strong as Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle or several other Studio Ghibli films. The Characters are well-developed, but somewhat forgettable. The storyline is interesting but doesn't leave you feeling like you've watched one of the greatest masterpieces ever like Spirited Away or Porco Rosso. Not that anything in the movie is bad, but nothing is utterly exceptionally compared to other movies made by the studio.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Excellent
Redline (movie) Excellent Redline is excellent. It will probably remain the best anime of its genre. As a racing anime set in a futuristic, intergalactic setting, the mood feels awesome. In fact, it may not be possible to find a better setting. The series also features one of the best soundtracks I've encountered. The most noticeable aspect of the anime is the animation. Never have I seen anything quite like it. As of right now, the movie has no dub. When it finally gets one I hope to god they find good voice actors for it, so the movie won't be ruined for English audiences.
Ringing Bell (movie) Very good This movie is a classic. It is story of a sheep who becomes like a wolf; the very thing that he initially hates. The pacing of this film is incredibly slow, and this is definitely its worst quality. Because of its age, the sound quality also suffers. Still, the film stands as a wonderful example of a good, pre-Studio Ghibli anime film.
Samurai 7 (TV) Good Based of the movie 7 Samurai, but set in a futuristic world, Samurai 7 manages to somehow pull it all off. Still, the result, although good, manages to fall short of excellent due to the hoops it had to jump through to be consistent with the movie. Even so, the show is worth watching if only to see a worthy attempt to take a classic movie, change the setting, and expand it into a TV show.
Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent Samurai Champloo mixes two things that, under normal circumstances, shouldn't be mixed: Samurai and Hip-Hop culture. Don't ask me how, but for some reason, it works. The series is one of the most enjoyable I've encountered. The animation, music, sound, story, and characterization are all fantastic. Hell, the only reason it's not a masterpiece is the ending fails to inspire.
Scrapped Princess (TV) Good Scrapped Princess is a good fantasy anime. If you go into it knowing nothing, the twists can be pretty interesting and fairly unexpected. The anime features a good length and feels properly paced. The animation is well done and the opening theme is very unique. The characters won't blow you away, but you should still find their exploits somewhat compelling.
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie)
Speed Racer (TV) Good Speed Racer is the first Anime I ever watched. Critics of the series would say I'm rating it too high, but I really enjoy watching it, even if the quality of the story or dialogue isn't top tier. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I still think this anime deserve a 'good' rating at the very least.
Spirited Away (movie) Masterpiece This movie is without a doubt one of Studio Ghibli's best. The story is reminiscent of Alice and Wonderland and also serves as a parable about the Japanese economy. The animation and voice acting are just what you would expect from the studio and overall the experience is fantastic.
Steins;Gate (TV) Masterpiece Steins;Gate is one of the most recent of the great anime out there. The sub's voice acting is some of the best out there and the animation is crisp, but these are not the things that earns Steins;Gate a masterpiece rating. The story is immaculate. One of the best pieces of time travel fiction in existence, the series manages to maintain an original feel, while still borrowing from and paying homage to the best that came before it.
Summer Wars (movie) Good
Trinity Blood (TV) Good
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV)
