Blood+ was in short a failure both as an action series and a drama. The hero is meek underwhelming and almost unlikable. You know those cliche` seens where the villan shows that they're clearly stronger than the hero, has the opertunity to kill them and doesn't, stateing some flimsy excuse like "I'll save this for a grander stage". Well that is pretty much what the entire series of Blood+ amounts to. Despite all it's failing though the conclusion mangaged to be mostly satisfying. I give a a very low B+.(get it?) |

While an average Lupin title for most of the film, Angel Tactics takes the old Lupin cliché of never getting hit by machine gun bullets to a ridiculous extreme especially towards the climax at the end. I one clip, Zenigata miraculously disarms 3 different masked women with and cuffs attached to strings, completely oblivious to what must be the hundreds of rounds being fired at him by automatic weapons. Don't get me wrong Lupin has dodged more than his fare share of bullets over the years but never has it looked more ridiculous. |

For a Lupin picture this one didn't seem to have that much Lupin. I think that the guest starlet Oleander was given far too much screen time. Also of note is that I don't think Zenigata has ever looked more bad ass then in this picture. Over all the serious tone of DoA and lack of focus on everybody's favorite leading man makes this one of the lesser Lupin titles. |

There is a point when the “action-packed” moniker no longer applies to a film and it can be better described as degenerating into an incoherent series of fight scenes, chase sequences, explosions, and gun battles.
I think “Farewell Nostradamus” reaches that point somewhere between Lupin escaping from prison and attempting to rescue his freshly electrocuted uncle with a bull dozer after and Lupin falling from a helicopter which of course is being chased by a machine gun and rocket launcher equipped motor boat promptly thereafter we see that Lupin has managed to escape some ominously silhouetted sharks and washed up on a deserted island where he is allotted exactly 4 seconds to drink from a coconut before being forced to flee the enormous tidal wave bearing down on him.
I apologize for my lack of punctuation in that paragraph but you see, the movie doesn’t give you a chance to breathe either. There were a couple of tender moments with Fujiko and I found young girl Julia appealing but if I have to see one more seen where the grief stricken Goemon and Jigen go off to avenge Lupin’s death…

Continuing in my quest to watch the adventures of Lupin III in there entirety I have just finished Island of Assassins originally titled, In memory of Walther P-38. Island of Assassins is not quite what Lupin fans have come to expect from the master thief. Gigen, Geoymon, Fujiko (this time as a blond), and Zenigata all return but the light-hearted and fun antics typical of the series are replaced by a darker tone with more focus on the action. While this does serve as a departure from the Lupin adventures we all know and love that doesn't mean it's not a high quality flick. The story is more cohesive then some of the past Lupin titles, The tenor of action and plot development leaves neither lacking. Though I have to say I was annoyed that when it was revealed that half the island of supposedly blood thirsty assassins actually "just want to get along. That served a necessary plot twist setting the stage for the good vs. evil assassin show down at the end that I found quite well done. it also irked me that the big villain of the special not reviled in until the last half hour or so was never seen or heard from previously. It just seems a bad to introduce a new character even if you use his face to fill in a previously blackened silhouette. All and all a good time I rate this with some of the better all around (if less jovial) Lupin films I've seen to date. A- |

As i near the end of my quest to watch every Lupin Special I find myself thinking the same thing over and over again "if this weren't a Lupin title..." I would really like to see a special that does it's title character justice. With the glaring exception on Castle of Caliostro I'm hard pressed to think of a lupin special with plot holes so big that Lupin could fly a bi-plane through it. What is it about him and propeller air craft anyway? This exceptionally weak outing is guilty of randomly injecting a Nazi hold over sect into the story for no reason. It's a shame too the premise of Lupin vs. 007 seems like it would make for a great ride.
Another thin i found Jarring about this particular caper is the unorthodox directing. Split screens shot are used the most irreverent times and there must of been at least 20 different dramatically shaded still frames.
In the end I give it a good D+, but even that would seem high if not for the status of the icon. |

Full Discloser: In all fairness this series probably shouldn't be as high on this list as it is. It was a good show but nowhere near Geass or Bebop. The fact of the matter is that this series spoke to me on such a personal level that I couldn't bring my self to give it a lesser rating. |
