Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Decent I'm only a few episode in, but it's been a pretty interesting ride so far as they introduce characters. There's a definite parallel here to the Zero character and the girl who gave him his power, C.C. Not sure if there's a direct link there or not, but it does have a similar feel. Hopefully this one won't take a story quality nosedive like Death Note did after the first season. *Ok, the strong start has fizzled and the episodes are already leaning toward the droning dialogue and uncompelling storyline of so many of the "buy our toys" type animes.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie)
One Piece (TV 1999) Decent This series seems to share the same sort of format as Bleach; the seasons are broken up into smaller stories that use as much filler as possible to stretch a single battle into 4 or 5 episode. I'm only up to about episode 30, but I've already been skiping ahead in many of them just to get past all the useless crap. The basic gist is this; Combatant A: "Let me tell you why I fight!!!!" (Some fighting ensues) Combatant B: "Oh yeah, well let me tell you why that's wrong" (More fighting) Combatant A: "You can never hop to win!!!" (More fighting) Combatant B: "No, you can never hope to win!!!!" (More fighting). And on and on and on. Despite all this, the series is entertaining and has it's funny moments, but it seems like it's going to try and reach 500 episodes with at least 75% useless filler (Bleach seems to be going for this as well) to try and wring every dollar they can out of it. Thankfully I always start a series by watching the bootlegs, so they don't get a dime of mine when they pull crap like this. *Up to about episode 90 now. There were a few groups of interesting episodes but we've gotten back to the "10 episodes to lead up to and complete a fight with some random bad guy" formula. The series still has some great humor and a few nicely serious moments when they start waxing on about friendship, but I've found myself skipping ahead in almost all of the episodes now.
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (TV) Good Only seen the first episode, but it looks pretty good so I'm looking forward to more. *Up through episode 9 now and still enjoying it. This is definitely one of those series where everything has a slow and deliberate pace to it, even the scenes of fighting. That's not a detractor from the series so far though, as it gives you time to imagine yourself in the shoes of the characters and even gives cause to hold you breath along with them when they're about to pull the trigger on another target. The targets themselves help to give you insight into the main characters Ein & Zwei as you see their reactions to the people they're about to kill, or perhaps not kill. This is definitely a love story in the anime action tradition of "I'm only 15 so I don't know what love is, but I have this overwhelming urge to fight for you using my amazing/superhuman abilities."
Shigurui: Death Frenzy (TV) So-so I've only made it to episode 2 and it just wasn't keeping my interest. I've been told it gets better at 3, but haven't gotten around to watching this series again.
