Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Awful Alternate retelling of the TV series and part of End of Eva. Not worth buying, unless you're a major Eva fan.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Bad Alternate retelling of the TV series and part of End of Eva. Not worth buying, unless you're a major Eva fan.
Last Exile (TV) Weak (dub & sub) Do not recommend buying due to the rushed and poorly done ending, which is a shame because I liked the first twenty-four episodes.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Weak As indicated by the title, watch only after seeing the TV series in full. This movie is necessary for the ending to make sense.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Not really good Notorious for having non-symbolic items interpreted as symbolism, but has an excellent cast of interesting characters. (Sub version preferred.)
Scrapped Princess (TV) Not really good Liked it right up until the point it changed from a fantasy anime to a sci-fi anime (about halfway through the series), then it was mostly down hill from there. Don't recommend buying this.
Buddha: The Great Departure (movie) So-so Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2011. Felt rushed; I haven't read the original manga myself, but if someone who has tells you to read it instead of seeing the movie, listen to them.
First Squad - The Moment Of Truth (OAV) So-so Screened at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2009.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa So-so Do not recommend buying this unless you are a diehard FMA fan desperate for more animated goodness.
Noir (TV) So-so An anime worth buying if you like action and girls shooting people, not something that interests me unfortunately.
Area 88 (TV) Decent Rated relatively high only because I like planes so much. Don't bother buying this if you don't like watching aerial dogfights or action anime in general.
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) Decent
Hal & Bons (OAV) Decent Stop-motion animated episodes of two dogs drinking beer together and chatting with a talking piece of mochi. Each episode is nothing more than dialogue between the three characters, and it's remarkably entertaining. Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2006, no idea if/when this will get an R1 release.
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Decent I consider this to be Miyazaki's worst movie to date, mostly because the plot doesn't flow as well as should, and the anti-war message is overblown. Still worth buying, but the book is much better.
New Hal & Bons (OAV) Decent Stop-motion animated episodes of two dogs drinking beer together and chatting with a talking piece of mochi. Each episode is nothing more than dialogue between the three characters, and it's remarkably entertaining. Viewed at the 2006 Hawaii International Film Festival, no idea if/when this will get an R1 release.
Texhnolyze (TV) Decent Exceptionally bleak and depressing anime (in the same class as Grave of the Fireflies) with a slow start (6-7 episodes to get going.) Worth buying if you can stand that sort of thing.
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) Good Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Spring Showcase 2009. It's almost identical to the first six episodes of the TV series, but with CGI and some minor changes. (Still worth watching, especially if in a theater.)
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos (movie) Good Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2011. Opens and ends strongly, but the middle section drags the movie down. The director and scriptwriter both need to be smacked with the "Show, Don't Tell" bat.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Good
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie) Good
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Good Notorious for having non-symbolic items interpreted as symbolism, but has an excellent cast of interesting characters. (Sub version preferred.)
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Good As indicated by the title, watch only after seeing the TV series in full. This movie is necessary for the ending to make sense.
NieA_7 (TV) Good Slice-of-life anime similar to Haibane Renmei, with plenty of comedy to go around. Sadly, it seems to be the least-known of the four anime Yoshitoshi ABe was involved in.
Planetes (TV) Good If you like hard sci-fi, there is no anime harder than Planetes. (To my knowledge, at least.)
Princess Mononoke (movie) Good Sub version strongly recommended over the dub.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Good
Summer Wars (movie) Good Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Spring Showcase 2010. Nice remake of Digimon: Bokura no War Game (released in the U.S. as part of Digimon: The Movie).
Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW (movie) Good Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2010.
Zipang (TV) Good Sending a modern JMSDF destroyer back to the Battle of Midway sounds like the set-up for some super-nationalistic and propagandistic story, but Zipang is nothing like that. Mildly disappointing ending (it seems to be setting up for a second season that was never made), but definitely worth buying overall.
5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) Very good
Aria the Animation (TV) Very good It's a girls-in-gondolas anime, what's not to like?
(The) Cat Returns (movie) Very good (dub & sub)
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Very good
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Very good
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) Very good Screened at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2009. This film makes it clear from the first scene that it will not be following the story of the TV series, and actually tops it.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (movie) Very good Screened at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2013.
From Up On Poppy Hill (movie) Very good
High School Fleet (TV) Very good
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) Very good
Kino's Journey (TV) Very good A series of vignettes as told by a traveler on a motorcycle, so there's no substantial overarching plot. Limited by 25-minute episode length, but overall an excellent buy.
Mei and the Baby Cat Bus (movie) Very good Viewed at the Ghibli Museum in December 2005.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Very good Good show all around, highly recommend watching it in broadcast order for best results.
Napping Princess (movie) Very good Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2017.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Very good An excellent movie doomed to forever live in the shadow of its more expansive manga counterpart. Watch the anime, then read the manga afterwards to avoid disappointment.
Ocean Waves (special) Very good Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2012.
Paranoia Agent (TV) Very good Series directed by Satoshi Kon. Mostly a commentary on modern Japanese society, so not recommended for people beyond hardened anime fans and those familiar with Japan itself.
Pom Poko (movie) Very good Tanuki + Takahata = Win.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) Very good
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Very good Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Spring Showcase 2009.
Squid Girl (TV) Very good
Tokyo Godfathers (movie) Very good Film directed by Satoshi Kon, who deserves more attention than he seems to get. Three homeless bums find an abandoned infant on Christmas Eve in Tokyo, hilarity ensues. What's not to like?
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Very good
(The) Wind Rises (movie) Very good
(The) Ancient Magus' Bride (TV) Excellent
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Excellent
(The) Boy and The Beast (movie) Excellent Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2015.
Denpa teki na Kanojo (OAV) Excellent
FLCL (OAV) Excellent
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Excellent
Girls und Panzer (TV) Excellent
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Excellent Only watched this once in 2003, but I'd say that's enough for several more years at least. Isao Takahata deserves far more respect than he gets. (Note: How much you like this movie directly depends on how much you care about Seita and his actions. Some consider him an idiot, some [like myself] consider him a kid trapped by events beyond his control.)
Kamichu! (TV) Excellent "Mitsue-chan, I became a goddess last night." Funimation has been kind enough to rerelease this, so do them the favor of buying it.
Lu over the wall (movie) Excellent
Mary and The Witch's Flower (movie) Excellent Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2017.
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Excellent
Night on the Galactic Railroad (movie) Excellent Screened at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2013. Weird, yet not obtuse at the end.
Paprika (movie) Excellent Film directed by Satoshi Kon, who was kind enough to appear at the Hawaii International Film Festival when this movie was shown there in Fall 2006.
Porco Rosso (movie) Excellent
Princess Mononoke (movie) Excellent Sub version strongly recommended over the dub.
Redline (movie) Excellent Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2010.
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie) Excellent
A Silent Voice (movie) Excellent
(The) Tale of the Princess Kaguya (movie) Excellent
Haibane Renmei (TV) Masterpiece Personal favorite that I recommend everyone watch.
A Letter to Momo (movie) Masterpiece Viewed at the Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2011. Reminiscent of Spirited Away and Kamichu, in story and setting.
Millennium Actress (movie) Masterpiece Film directed by Satoshi Kon, probably the second-least confusing of his work.
Spirited Away (movie) Masterpiece (dub & sub)
Wolf Children (movie) Masterpiece Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2012.
your name. (movie) Masterpiece Viewed at Hawaii International Film Festival Fall 2016.
