Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (TV) Good Requiem for a Phantom is some of the worst writing I have ever encountered , but the worst part is the show had so many chances to be good. Up to the very end whenever the writers had the chance to make a good decision, the opted not. I just cannot comprehend what they were thinking unless they were thinking specifically, I mean what is a meeting with those writers like? Writer number one exclaims with a gleam in his eye "lets make something so lawlzy terrible that its not even lawlzy its just regular terrible!", to which writer number two cheerfully retorts "LOL great idea dumb writer number one!". I could make a detailed list of why I hate this anime so much but since i am currently in denial and pretending like it was a good show so that I don't break my hard drive for ever housing such an infuriating piece of garbage
Elfen Lied (TV) Excellent A sweet sympathetic story wrapped in gratuitous violence and nudity, the contrast makes for a very interesting experience. And beyond that some of the individual characters i.e. Bondo, Lucy are absolutely top notch. Plus plenty of fan service if you care for it :/
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Masterpiece All the best themes of the series in one fantastic movie
Baccano! (TV) Excellent amazing fights good animation dumb plot great characters! This might not be the thinking man's anime but it sure is a fun one
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) Very good charming and funny but never comes up with new jokes and gets a little stale, that being said it might just have the best main character ever
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Decent Convolution of very ordinary and boring themes and ideas does not make them more interesting. I don't understand what everyone sees in this anime. Unoriginal uninteresting characters lackluster animation and art-style and as far as the writing goes though they attempt to have commentary on some interesting ideas they do it with a lot of dreadful dialog instead of contextually within the story or characters actions
RahXephon (TV) Very good Couldn't call it unique but surprising plot twist and interesting plot arcs make it stand out above the crowd. It has a strong focus on character relationships so if your into that you wont be disappointed
ef: a tale of memories (TV) Excellent Dammit as much as I want to be jaded and hate this anime i cannot it has dumb characters with unrealistic silly relationships but its just done so damn well i cant help but love it! DAMN MY ROMANTIC TENANCIES!!!
Wolf's Rain (TV) Excellent Dark dark dark i mean not as dark as something like "The Road" but thats part of what makes it good. Weird but engrossing plot and endearing characters very interesting very recommended
FLCL (OAV) Masterpiece Doesn't really do anything to unique but every single thing in this anime be it the style the music or the fights is done better than anything else I've seen
Kino's Journey (TV) Masterpiece Great writing and creative story telling. Unlike other animes this one will make you think without confusing the hell out of you all the ideas and themes are accessible and fascinating.
Excel Saga (TV) Excellent Hilarious all the things that make me hate anime are made fun of here absolutely unapologetically absurd.
Bastard!! (OAV) Very good I don't know if this is funny on purpose or not but i absolutely love it (watch it dubbed) think about what would happen if Rett Buttler from gone with the wind was a post apocalyptic warlock and that is Bastard!!
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Weak I just don't understand what about this is good. Probably the slowest movie ever i fell asleep 3 times during it. There is really no redeeming value in this. Its not interesting funny or exciting not scary fun or even pretty i just don't know how to be entertained at all by this movie.
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV) Excellent I really really wanted this anime to be a masterpiece and it sure is fantastic but it suffers greatly from a complete loss of focus in the middle of the series. The evolution of the main character is fantastic and some of the supporting characters are equally interesting and dynamic but i must emphasize the word SOME. Because the side characters the creators decided to focus on are the least compelling and interesting of the whole bunch! I understand they had to keep to the books but honestly it seems like it weakened the anime alot. DESPITE this it is a fantastic anime so good in fact that no anime has ever made me so excited after 6 episodes then disappointed me so much when the direction of the plot completely changes in summation WATCH IT and don't let dated art style drive you away
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Masterpiece If you want to show someone that anime can be mature and artistic just show them this... subbed
Spice and Wolf (TV) Excellent Interesting and unique anime with a good love story that takes place on the sidelines and in a relatively mature and believable manner i.e. none of that OMGOSH i think i might like her but i dunno if she likes me. Though don't expect the kind of love story you would see in a western story (in other words don't expect them to ever consummate)
Trigun (TV) Very good Interesting plot fun characters unfortunately fairly ordinary
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Excellent Mature artistic and enchanting, yes a flowery word but the characters music and story do so suit it. And when i say mature I mainly mean the story and the characters which makes this anime a glowing example of what anime can be at its best
Desert Punk (TV) Not really good My thoughts when i started watching. Hey this is funny and unique seems like a clever show. Thoughts after 5 episodes. Hey they just use the same 3 jokes over and over and over and over and over and over and over and the novel uniqueness wares off quite quickly because despite the setting is it no more original than something like Naruto.
Violence Jack (OAV) Awful Ok this is almost worth it for being so goddamn funny but since the humor is accidental i didn't think the anime deserved a rating based on it
Eureka Seven (TV) Masterpiece Probably the best character design and development in any series. The action is unique and visually stunning. Though the story itself is run of the mill Japanese nonsense the individual plot arks and the supporting characters are so full of life and emotion it more than makes up for any drawback. Starts slow so watch the first 20 then decide because its hard to stop watching after the craziness in ep. 20
Spice and Wolf II (TV) Good Probably unfair to put this just as "good" but honestly its disappointing especially the ending my only complaint is how much better it could have been :/
Gantz (TV) Good Stylish and exciting its fun to watch but don't expect anything more than a shallow experience
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal) Worst ever Terrible beyond words 7 episodes are identical stuck in some awful time loop plot device and the rest are just the characters making their movie from the original season. Watch the first episode and pretend the rest doesn't exist PLEASE
Gungrave (TV) Weak The plot summary is more interesting than the anime itself
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Very good This anime is carried by its fun lovable characters. Its a school anime about students who cant admit their feelings for each-other which of course SUCKS but trust me this is a can't miss anime
Blue Gender (TV) Masterpiece This got me into anime. Very dark post apocalypse with interesting evolving characters. Not the best animation but it actually seems to improve the grit and attitude of the series. Surprisingly unique with good action i recommend to anyone who likes the themes involved. Including awesome side burns
REC (TV) Very good This is much more down to earth than most anime. Its short but very sweet and if you want something closer to reality and less "hi I am the lead male" "hi I am the tsunedre I'm going to hit you for 10 episodes and kiss you for 2" then this is for you
Ergo Proxy (TV) Masterpiece Try to watch with footnotes. There are a lot of references you wont get without them, unless you are extremely well read. BUT I can recommend this to anyone because unlike much anime the references are supplementary to the psychological and philosophical messages presented by the characters actions and relationships. No anime, in fact no media has ever so artistically presented religion individuality and the basest of "human" emotions
Gurren Lagann (TV) Excellent Unique exciting and funny. Great plot arc that moves very quickly with a lot of surprises and fun characters i would be hard pressed to find some one who didn't like this one
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Masterpiece Watch to at least the third episode. This is a dark and well written story, don't let the animation or main character fool you this is intensely dark.
Darker than Black (TV) Excellent Well if you are like me and you have a hard on for interesting unique characters this is the anime for you. Most anime has an immature super outgoing/shy teenage main character. Darker than black has a angry vengeful depressed man who is haunted by his past. That is enough to make me love this anime but the unique and exciting fight scenes amazing supporting characters and interesting plot just make this one over the top fantastic
