and there's a bizarre magical girl element at the end where during the poker game Rio enters some weird magical gambling fantasy world with lots of swirling numbers and cards and leaves and crap and apparently this gives her some measure of control over what the outcome of the game is (which I believe would be referred to as “cheating” by anyone playing cards with Rio).

It's not "cheating", it's The Heart of the Cards! Laughing

Yay! The winter preview has begun! And I got a free month @ CR so I can actually watch things when they premier!

Assuming said thing isn't a based-on-pachinko-game show. I mean, seriously, I may occasionally...all right, often Embarassed bash fanservice series as shows without the guts to be porn, but frankly the "plot" of Ikkitousen sounds faaaar more interesting than this. And I agree with the reviewers: if your central conceit (she helps gamblers win!) is a gaping plot-hole, your series has a problem.

Ah well, hopefully we'll get a few series with good plot this season.

I was honestly surprised to see four separate reviews for the show.

All of them basically saying the same thing. Razz

I now have to watch Rio just to see how bad it is. I mean not even the recent bad anime I have seen has had this type of negative opinion.

Watched Rio....on Crunchyroll all the way through continuously hoping for the unlikely: an excuse to find reason, any reason to anxiously await how the script writers will save this series starting with episode 2.

Not even an old man, and trust me as I'm 63, sees any point watching this unless Rio was intended to be anime's back-handed tribute to the original screenwriters of the memorable 1942 b&w film "Casablanca" that starred Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, et al. I'm thinking Rio can be of interest provided you view this ep on a split screen with Casablanca. Re-imagine the anime scene of the young couple betting at the roulette table. This is how Casablanca might appear if produced today designed in a Japanese computer instead of on a set location somewhere in southern California.

I might follow up on Rio if I can be reassured the scripting of the show's ending scenes loosely resemble something similar to the balance and drama Casablanca possessed. However, I suspect the continuity of Rio will likely dispose itself of audience just as adroitly as Casablanca dispatched those pesky Nazis.

*stops at 15:00 mark for Rio ep.1*

OHHH Good God... I remember having THE most absurd anime dream a few months back that involved bunny girls, a little girl with a droppy bunny doll with a bright background. And that shot around the 13:08 mark totally gave me de javu. If for some reason a mecha bunny comes out and the 2 girls transform with the floppy bunny doll riding them happens... I just may start playing the lottery... or get my head checked.

*presses play on Rio ep.1*

*done*

Wow... an absurd dream for an equally absurd series... The visual quality (and I don't mean the boobies) is good so it's hard to write off the series if they put so much into the art at episode one... but I can't see myself sticking with this show... and now I'm upset that there wasn't a mecha bunny and to transforming bunny girls. And not in the "magical girl" kind of way but a "transformer or yugioh fusion" kind of way...

The fanservice part doesn't look like it'll bother me, but the premise seems really flimsy. Like Carl mentioned why would a casino keep Rio around if she gives the casino goers lots of luck so they could win every time?

It's an anime financed by a company that makes pachinko/slot machines so it unrealistically glorifies the gambling hobby.

Of course it doesn't make any sense.

Would even gamblers take this to heart?

Maybe my brain is foggy from all the egg nog that I inhaled the past few days but does the Winter season always start so...late? Maybe I'm just crazy but I could of sworn it started a few good weeks ago. I could be thinking about the end of the fall season but it shocked me to think that it's the start of a new season let alone the winter one.

From the sounds of it, Rio's pretty much nothing more than a Mary Sue type character. Total stock character with nothing to flesh out...except, of course, her flesh.

I'll probably catch the one episode just to hear Marina Inoue, though, seeing as she's one of my favorites, next to Yu Kobayashi.

That isn't what a Mary Sue is.

I know, but it was the closest thing I could think of at the time.

I mean, in the broad sense of the term, it could be. Basically, a character that is overhyped. Not by the audience, of course, but by the people inside the world, which pertains usually to the creators.

Long to short, even if this is an original (in an even more broader sense of the term) story, this might as well be a fanfiction.

But whatever the actual description is, I don't really feel like browsing Tv Tropes to find out.

Christ, I go there to find out about Greg Keyes, I end up with seven tabs open by the end of the day.

Rio may win the Demon King Daimao award for most incomprehensible show for the Winter Season!
spoiler[
1. The guy said he was a collector. Why didn't he try offering the kid and Mr. Monopoly a large sum of cash? Instead his first choice is to assault and rob a child in public.

2. When everyone is distracted by the poker match, the henchmen could have just clubbed the kid and taken the bear. I guess teddy bear thieves have a code of honor.

3. I recommend that you stay away from the buffet. That joint has large white rats running around.

4. Where is casino security?]

Maybe I'm being to hard on Demon King Daimao. At least they tried in the first few episodes.

The show isn't boring, it's just stupid as hell and not really any more or less offensive than - oh, let's say Ikki Tousen, but boy, it sure would be nice if one day one of these fanservice shows decided you can mash T&A all over the screen and least attempt to accompany it with something resembling a decent story or characters worth caring about beyond their measurements.

You mean "Asobi ni Ikuyo" and "Highschool of the Dead" (or for earlier ones: "Witchblade" and "Divergence Eve")?

Go easy on the 'nog, my friend. The winter season always starts in January after the New Years' bonanzas in Japan (most continuing shows were on break over the weekend).

Winter: January - March
Spring: April - June
Summer: July- September
Fall: October-December
