I was kind of turned away by the age gap at first, but since it’s by Kaoru Mori, I’m definitely going to check this one out. Also even though I really like Shirley and Emma, I'm glad Mori is doing something different this time.

Having read much more than just this volume, I can say that it never gets any more exciting.

Not only does the soothing become replaced with boring, it continues well into monotonous and repetitive.

I loved Emma and liked Shirley but this is a title that just does nothing.

Turning away from the plot is pretty much denying history. You don't get to wash over the past with our modern values on your convenience.
And I guess Emma threw a bigger plot at you than what this series does. But her mature women are freaking adorable.

It felt weird reading this manga before the story started to develop (should be in the second volume). I feel like it'd make a nice transition to anime aside from the loss in detail, because sound and music could fill in where the story and and development are sort of barren.

I'm considering buying this manga because of its positive reviews. The age gap, while large when one party is 12, will increasingly seem less-so as he approaches/passes adulthood (and before someone accuses me of having double standards, this is because I'm assuming that this manga doesn't dwell on the lascivious aspects of wedding a child). My question then is-- how many volumes is this expected to run? Is that known yet?

Edit (2011.08.26): I bought volume 1 and loved it. I'll be following this series.

The Shogun Fujiwara no Yoritsune married a 28-year-old woman when he was 13 years old. 4 years later she died in childbirth.

Truly! That would make a perfect anime!
Though they may have to do it like South Park. Laughing

Thank goodness the young lad was spared suffering thru her oba-san years while he was still in his golden years as a young eligible "bachelor." Laughing

The only thing this manga could be considered lascivious about it historical detail. Really, the age gap doesn't come into play much. There is one scene where spoiler[Karluk and Amir crawl into bed naked to stay warm], but that's as prurient as it gets. Of all the reasons not to get this, "boring" should be more of a concern than "raunchy." Smile I believe there are two volumes at the moment, but Mori isn't known for her lengthy series, so I could see this going to ten volumes or so.

You know, I did wonder how that would change the reception of this book...I almost mentioned it in the review, but decided that would be flame-baiting and totally non-reviewy. Wink

Hardcover is pretty rare for a manga, so Yen must be swinging for the fences with this one. Mori does great stuff, and is a true history/scenery buff, so I'll probably be picking this up.

This was SUCH a beautiful book, I just received mine this week! Totally agree with the review. The age gap was more interesting than troubling to me - and the cultural elements had me (as a geography major, haha) riveted.

AND THAT DETAILED LINE WORK... *swoons*

I noticed that there's no longer a listing for manga reviewer on ANN's staff openings: does that mean that you've filled the position now? If so, congrats and good luck!
