They are usually either too inncoent, too dumb or not agressive enough or too aggressive. It's just a pain too find good female characters. I feel like I'd prefer too see my favorite bishonen with an interesting male character like himself than with an idiotic female one. Well, to some extent as I said before I prefer heterosexual couples when possible.

I have to agree with this. The reason why I stumbled upon yaoi manga in the first place is because I started avoiding female anime/manga characters. The general thought for me was the less female characters the better. This is not because I hate women or anything (being that I am a woman that's simply stupid) or that I'm jealous. The reason is that I don't like how women are depicted in anime and manga. I can't identify with them and they aren't like any women I know. The fanservice doesn't help at all of course. I have no interest in seeing girl panties. I have a lot of them myself. I can see panties whenever I feel like it.
That being said, I still like romances so I read yaoi/bl/shounen ai or whatever people want to call it. Of course there tend to be whiney and stupid characters there also but since they're not women I don't need be irritated or take it personally as a woman.
I do enjoy hetero romances of course just not in anime or manga. Of course if someone can point me toward a good manga with a strong female character that doesn't feel a need to show her panties or flash her boobies I'd be thrilled. Only anime I can think of that fit into that are Miyazaki's films and I've seen them all already (and love them).

to guys who are real yuri, shoujo-ai, and lesbian porn fans, the girl/girl thing is like a spectator sport: sit back and enjoy the show.

Well, yea that definantly equates into it. Something else I think is that two women show love to each other differently than a guy does to a girl. They may be more afectionate, sweet, emotionally charged, etc. With shoujo-ai romance its whole different set of dynamics than a guy/girl pairing, which I just think is really entertaining to watch play out.

There is a straight male doujinshi artist that did a yaoi doujinshi. The story goes that this guy was really struck by how well done a particular yaoi doujinshi was by a female doujin artist. He was so moved by it that he decided to make his own, however he refused to sell it to guys. He would only sell it to women.

I don't think it's that big of a deal for an artist to draw something that they would not normally draw, as long as they were comfortable with themselves about it.

Well, what about normal shoujo manga? There's no pantie flashes there.

That's because wondering why girls like straight shoujo manga is as pointless as wondering why girls like dolls and boys like toy guns.

Though, a more interesting question for another discussion is why do alot of NORMAL, STRAIGHT men (we're not talking the guy you'd normally see being perfectly willing to be a "typical male", not some sociopath or pervert or homosexual. no offense to homosexuals, btw) like some shoujo manga as much (if sometimes more) than the shounen manga that should appeal directly to them.

like some shoujo manga more than other shoujo manga that should directly appeal to them? Not sure what you mean? Or did you mean prefering shoujo over shounen?

The only real answer to that is that some guys (definately in the minority) simply prefer the kinds of stories presented in most shoujo - most shoujo stories are shown from a girl's point of view, and that may be interesting to some.

On the other hand, there are some shoujo works that simply have universal appeal, like Fruits Basket, His & Her, Utena, etc. If a lot of girls like shounen works that have such universal appeal, shouldn't it make sense that some shoujo works would exist with this appeal as well?

Shonen & shoujo deal with certain things. The usual line I see on guys liking shoujo is shoujo is more on feelings & emotions than the usual shonen, & some guys like that. Who really cares about the target qudience if one likes it.
No female fan service in shoujo? Never read Yu Watase, have you? Last thing I want to see is Miaka in her underwear. Or Aya. I'll take Toya anytime. Same with her other guys, but shojo does throw in female fan service. Shonen is actually not a bad place for male fan service. Pope Ares needs a haircut. We almost saw his rear when he stepped out of the bath on the last dvd. And that was a pretty good full pace of Misty ankle deep washing off after his battle with Seiya.
But the gals can be annoying. I'm very close to abandoning Boys Over Flowers because I'm already perturbed with the heroine by volume 10 & there are about 35 volumes.
Jealousy & competetive aren't the same thing. Hating the idiot female lead as an insult to female intelligence can be viewed as being critical/competetive without being jealous of the character.
So even when the guy is acting stupid like they do, it's not as insulting to me as a female, so I'm more forgiving. Plus they're pretty to look at, so I can ignore stupid behavior. Does the heroine being pretty mean stupid behavior won't irritate me? Of course not. I don't care if she's a beauty queen--if she gets too annoying, I drop the title.

I don't know if there's any manga here in the US (or outside of japan) that deal with women/women in a sexual relationship (perhaps in a romantic one).

I'm not positive but there is two title thats is coming froming ADV that might consider Yuri. The first one is Eidron Shadow which I believe have alot of girl on girl action(some consider it hental) and the second is Lilth in Wonderland(which is Yami to boushi to honnotabibito if the description is right) which the girl and girl romantic love.

Who knows maybe ADV is trying to find to there is any yuri and shoujo-ai fan here.

Even though I'm a guy, I love yaoi because it's very aesthetically pleasing, sexually stimulating, and emotionally engaging. My opinions as to why girls like yaoi so much have been elaborated already.

But I'm the minority here. Embarassed

As a supporter of Gay and lesbian rights I find it fascinating to find a genre dedicated to the love that they share. I'm a het female and I love a good bought of pretty men going at it with eachother. Men have a lot of fascination with women on women action and no one questions them. While there isn't neccisarily a big following as far as shounen ai is concerned there is still a considerable amount of interest. Women have a fascination with the unobtainable. You always want what you can't have.

Well I am a major Yaoi Fan, name a series I probably have it...I suppose its not that easy to analise yourself but here are my anitial thoughts...

The fact that alot of the posts I've read on the internet seem to make out its only young teenage girls after some fobidden curiosity...not true several of me and my friends who are into Yaoi are coming into our late 20s / 30s.

I think its the fact that I have been raised in a society based around females being the weaker, needier species...even with the feminist movement...the same Fairy Tales base our childhoods...and even coming into age, the men are still society's leaders (not that there is anything wrong with that)Smile I think it is some kind of turn on to see a man sercum to being female, being dominated, having to please, giving themselves in the bedroom...I think switching the roles in my mind is fascinating and its a power thing.

Recapping on my own theories that I'm sure have already been mentioned, There are no females in Yaoi to Compete with. There is no need for us to be in anyway involved. There is no female being weaker, man being dominant and coming to the rescue. I think the final main reason is seeing men submitting sexually...something hey don't really do...and it is written more for a female audience without the typical drama of the normal relationships in real life we are used to dealing with... Hope this helps

Fujoshi high-five! ^5

We should compare shelves! I posted mine in the "show your shelves" thread ... I have an entire bookcase that's pretty much nothing but yaoi. Hinako Takanaga is my favorite. I have everything of hers that is out in the US.

As for what is so appealing about yaoi... o__o Yeah, okay, I get asked this a lot, and I can't ever really articulate it. "I just like it" seems rather vague, but it's true. As soon as I became aware of yaoi and what it was, bam. Love at first sight, you know?

It's to the point that I really don't even care about het romances anymore, I pretty much only read yaoi manga. I like to read m/m fiction as well, fantasy books like Lord of the White Hell, Melusine, Havemercy, etc.

It's not so much "yaoi", I just really love all types of romance. As long as the characters make a great pair, have legitimate chemistry and a nice, happy, healthy relationship, their sexes don't matter to me at all. Wink

I kind of....well, really hate people who bash hetero couples in favor of yaoi because "OMG TEH GURL IS ANNOYING AND MAN-ON-MAN IS SO HAWT".

I think that's pretty shallow...especially if the hetero pair is the canon or is a better option. >_>

I must admit, THIS IS TRUE. Anime hyper

I'm still hoping for Embracing Love. That's like on every yaoi fans list to own, but no one can bring the damned thing over.
