Someone mind telling me the order they come in, please? I only have Melancholy and want to buy the rest, but don't want to read them in the wrong order...

Well, judging by the wikipedia page that conveniently seems to lack any spoiler tags, it would be:
Melancholy 6/2003
Sigh 9/2003
Boredom 12/2003
Disappearance 7/2004
Rampage 10/2004
Wavering 3/2005
Intrigues 8/2005
Indignation 5/2006
Disassociation 4/2007
Astonishment 5/2011, 5/2011 (2 parts) (<-My sister brought me this from a trip she took, alas I have about 6 words total in my japanese vocabulary)

I just finished Melancholy, which was great except for a couple of unsettling parts; the translation seemed of good quality, I felt like I could really feel Tanigawa's style. I've been wondering if it's worth getting into the series, since I hear the author originally only planned the one book. I mean, I know the anime was a huge hit (haven't seen it) but if they published 3 books in 6 months, I can't help but suspect he'd already written them when the first went to print.

I mean, maybe he only thought he'd get just try to get a stand-alone book published; I know a lot of authors have loads of idea kicking around and it's just a question of if it's profitable or not. I just don't want to get suckered into "it's Haruhi, buy it!" commercialism. If it was just a matter of whether or not someone would publish them, I'm okay with that. I don't know what people who have more knowledge on the background of this have to say.

Remember that those dates are the dates of publication in stand-alone volumes. Some, if not all, of these had appeared serialized in The Sneaker magazine beforehand. but I can't find any information in English as to what issues these were in.

The Sneaker's published date was always two months prior to the date listed. That means The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya (story) was published in April 2003, whereas the first novel, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, was published in June 2003.

I didn't even realize Wavering had come out. I was planning on going out to get the new Kick-Ass tomorrow, so let's hope the nearby bookstore has a copy.

I hated the anime, but I've been reading the first novel and I'm really enjoying it. I'm hoping the rest of the novels manage to keep my interest.

Just a quick question.

I want to start reading the novels after watching the anime. Both seasons and the movie. Will I be missing anything important if I start at the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya where the anime ended rather than from the start at the Melancholy?

I have watched the anime so I'd think I'd know what is going on or is it that the book is kinda different and I would need to read the whole thing to understand what is going on.

There is no content in the "Melancholy" novel that is not in the anime, and I do not recall anything that is significantly different.
You should be OK starting with "Disappearance."

In terms of content there is nothing in the books that is not in the anime until "Snowy Mountain Syndrome," the last story in the "Rampage" novel.

The only significantly different story compared to the animation adaptations is Lone Island Syndrome. You'll better understand Haruhi's statement about drinking from Disappearance as well as see a different way the story climaxes. Every other story was adapted well from the novel source minus the sweet sake in Sigh, but best not to have minors drink on TV.

Volumes 3, 5, 6,and 8 contain short stories. As such, the first two stories in volumes 5 and 6 have been animated (Endless Eight & The Day of Sagittarius, in volume 5 and Live a Live & The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina: Episode 00 in volume 6) , so you'll want to skip over them if you are only interested in non-animated stories.

Thanks for the help. :D

I shall get my hands on the Disappearance as soon as I can, though I do plan to get the earlier novels at a later date.

I want to have haruhi novel english version (I can't read japanese) for my novel collection. But if you really want to read next story, u can try some unnoficial translation.

I believe they will close the project soon, because haruhi english translation already licensed.
