Heh, tiredgamer, you beat me to it Wink After seeing the fifth episode of Samurai Champloo, I wanted to find out more about erotic ukiyo e paintings. They're mentioned in the Tale of Genji too. So I decided to do some research, erm, ok ok I just typed shit into Google. I'm a fraud! But anyway, yes, after "researching," I found that painting with the woman and octopus and thought that it explained alot... If you keep looking, you can find more antique octopus porn! Joy!

There should be some sort of standard of practice that dictates if you're going to show a question, and not answer it, you shouldn't show it at all.
I hate the whole culture of elitism and "DON'T ASK QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN ASKED!!" on the internet sort of things like this.
It just makes people feel bad.
Yes, it's just the internet.. so?
There still should be SOME sort of standards in place of decency.
SOME people don't know about, or even HOW to read back entries on things, some people just aren't that bright. Should they be punished?
Ms. Answerman thinks so!

I'm all for legislation that requires people to score positively on an IQ test to be able to access the internet, but if this were to happen the internet probably wouldnt be as fun so it all works out in the long run.

One of my colleages found some anime shoes once. They were Yu-Gi-Oh sandals that had been abandoned on a beach.

Hello. I just read the review of Nausicaä on ANN, and I noticed, for the first time, I think, that there is a umlaut or dieresis (¨) over the final 'a'. I think it is a dieresis, which would mean that it would be pronounced 'Nausica-yuh'. Is this true?

In Greek, Nausicaa is pronounced Nausica-a, both 'a'-s are pronounced independently from each other.
Because this doesn't work like this in English, a dieresis must be placed on the second 'a'.

IQ tests, eh?

Well.. I think pointlessly ridiculing someone for asking a question they probably weren't aware of being asked, just to make them the butt of an internet ranting, or whatever, is just as bad, if not worse than a the average dumb shmuck's routine ass-making-of-self online.

Did these two have one of those innocent relationships that only lasted a week or two before one of them had to return home and now Yukiko will never know how much it meant to him because he sent it to the wrong email address? Or was she blowing him off by giving him the wrong email?
I had a similar situation happen to me a few years ago. Our phone woke us up on an early Sunday morning with some bloke who was on the piss asking me why I was at his girlfriends house. It took me a few minutes to explain that the phone number his, as it turned out new girlfriend he had tried to pull at some disco, had infact given him my number and not her's. My wife took the phone and asked him what his girl's name was. "Shella" was his reply. Me missus told him that it wasn't her name and it propably wasn't the other girl's name either, and hung up. Thankfully he never did phone back. Laughing

Either way Ms. Answerman, I feel your pain. You may get letters, but I get IM spam.
Godaistudios, your post is true. Ever since IM was established the way people use the english language has slowly deteriorated. The way people type even when they're not on IM is just awful. Typing "u" insted of "you" or "ur" instead of "your" is just the height of lazyness! For pete's sake people, typing one or two extra letters will not break or your fingers. I'm sick and tired trying to decipher the secret code of IM talk.

Thanks for that link, Tiredgamer. I let a buddy from work borrow RahXephon, and now he's trying to get me to watch one of his shows - Legend of Overfiend. I hadn't even heard of it until now...
I'm sure glad I dind't take his advice!

Fortunately, it's only every so often that the IM's I receive are quite that bad. Still, I don't know if it's the advent of online communication, or if the blame lies with our educational system. Whatever the reason, I wish people would wake up. The example I provided above was inspired by an actual conversation I had. Bamboo (a.k.a. SakechanBD) and a couple of others can actually vouch for that since I felt the need to share this atrocity.

Admittedly, I make the occasional grammatical blunder. I'm sure a few people in here have noticed when I have. Even so, at least I make an effort.

Dear Ms. Answerman,
The first time I bought the Berserk series, it was recommended by a friend. He said it was a good buy, and one of his favorite anime's of all time. After having seen it, I can gladly say the same. I've been praying for a second season, and I've been hearing rumors lately that answer those prayers. Any chance of a second season for this amazing show? Will all the same staff be involved? Thanks!

I’d like to point out the date of this question, just so you guys know that I am STILL getting these from time to time.

on thehawks.org it says that there is going to be a second season, so this is understandable

I know! Good God, I once even ran into someone on here who for one thing, was pissed that ANN ran it's (annual and traditional!) April Fool's Day joke stories, even though they corrected every one of them the next day (like always!), and even though even respectable news organizations such as the BBC do joke stories on April Fool's Day (as was pointed out by myself and several others). Then the guy proceeded to flame me in PM.

One of the things I had pointed out in the original thread in question was that if he really wanted to be taken seriously, it might be a good idea to capitilize his I's and use spelling that was recognizable as the English language. In one of his flames - hold on, I'll dig it up - he wrote:

Quote:
i don't have time to check what am writing AMIGO

As should be easily distinguishable from my very feminine username, I'm female (and hence, an amiga). So, he was actually butchering two languages at once. Way to go, buddy! Rolling Eyes

After I responded - noting both his butchery of Spanish and the inherent stupidity in his claim because basically, it was obviously done on purpose (not a single "I" of his was capitilized), and that, based on my experimentation, it takes so little more time to capitilize it than to not capitilize it, that that really wasn't much of an excuse (my entire reply is far too long and detailed to post), he flamed me three more times, getting progressively more amusingly stupid, and proving also that he had no concept whatsoever of "metaphor" or "sarcasm". Rolling Eyes

Actually, this is eerily reminiscient of it:

Quote:
There should be some sort of standard of practice that dictates if you're going to show a question, and not answer it, you shouldn't show it at all.

Some of them weren't questions, one of them seemed more like a plug for the series than an actual person asking a question, and some were asking a question that she HAS answered several times before. Besides of which, it's HER column, not yours. So, if she so chooses, she is perfectly within her rights to only show "outtakes", or to poke fun at stupid questions and bizarre, spam-like missives.

Quote:

I hate the whole culture of elitism and "DON'T ASK QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN ASKED!!" on the internet sort of things like this.

Somebody's never been to Godawful Fan Fiction or interacted with certain members of the YuriCon ML if they think THIS is "elitest" (though to be fair, GAFF is usually funny, too, and has members that actually call each other on their elitism when it does pop up).

Also, why bother your head over somebody ELSE not wanting their time wasted? And yes, it IS a waste of time. From what I can tell, you would not believe the number of emails poor Ms. Answerman gets that ask the same damn questions over and over again. If she spent ALL of her time answering those emails, she'd have no time at all for interesting or unique questions that are actually worth her time (and ours, too, since we're the ones who end up reading it).

Quote:

It just makes people feel bad.

Only the ones who are too lazy to look at the old columns or Google it. I mean, I ENJOY looking at the old columns, they're interesting and informative, so it's not like it's a chore to go through them all. And what of the forums? Why can't people just ask on the forums, and then people can point them to an Answerman column where she did. Then they don't have to even bother her!

Quote:

Yes, it's just the internet.. so?

So, one should realize that a LOT of people have access to ANN, and that there's a good chance that one's question has already been asked, and either look back through the old columns for it, or Google "Answerman [insert title of series and any pertitent bits of the question, such as 'second season', or 'release date']", for God's sake.

Quote:

There still should be SOME sort of standards in place of decency.

In PLACE of decency? Then by your standards, she should have standards INSTEAD of decency? Laughing Folks, this is why grammar is important (I believe you meant "for decency")!

Also, common decency states that one should use proper grammar and spelling when writing to someone, and that in cases such as this, one should be careful to look and see that one's question has not already been answered. After all, Ms. Answerman is taking time out of her week and her personal life to answer all these questions; the least people can do is to capitilize their I's and not be redundant, right?

Quote:

SOME people don't know about, or even HOW to read back entries on things, some people just aren't that bright. Should they be punished?

Yes, they should. Otherwise they won't learn. Sometimes it takes a little tough love. C'est la vie.

Here's what it says on the bottom of EVERY Answerman column, by the way, since you seem to have a bit of a selective memory:

Quote:
discuss this in the forum (26 posts)
back to Answerman
back to columns

So, there's obviously past articles, and it's obviously quite easy to access them. "Some people just aren't that bright", indeed!

Quote:

Ms. Answerman thinks so!

Yes, she does. And for good reason; she doesn't like having her time, and by proxy, our time, wasted. At least she's funny about it; I think that goes to show that she's got a good head on her shoulders.

Quote:

Well, that's your opinion. My opinion is that you're being "the average dumb shmuck", here. These people are being stupid, making a mistake that's quite stupid, and wasting people's time with something that for God's sake, is REALLY easy to find out (ever hear about the "search" feature? Yeah, it's this nifty thing that most news sites have in their navigation and that Google made a mint on). It's no worse than the moron who flamed me four times for pointing out that being upset over an AFD joke was rather silly, true; but it's still stupid, and it's still not worth it to mollycoddle them. Life doesn't mollycoddle stupidity; why should Answerman?

And the ranting wasn't completely pointless; it reminds us that the answer to the question is the same, and that asking such questions AGAIN will be itself rather pointless, thereby cutting down on the overall number of really stupid emails that Answerman has to wade through.

Oh, for some reason this reminds me about something I've been meaning to bring up: I love it when the columns have captioned pictures (the one next to my Evangelion question, for one, was hysterical). Is there any specific reason they don't? Is is just that you don't have the time to do them anymore, or is it a bandwidth issue? I don't blame you or anything, I just missed the captioned pictures and wondered why they weren't being used very often anymore, is all. Wink

The tentacle stuff is actually fascinating - by which I mean the Wikipedia entry, of course - I had no idea it went back so far in time. Shocked And that woodcut... is just plain bizarre.
