Well, bugger me with a fish fork. Shocked I was of the opinion that once AnimEigo lost the license, that was the last that we were going to see of the Macross discs. I wonder though, are these just the last lingering backstock from AnimEigo, or is HG going to restart production of the discs?

Figures HG would pull the license from AnimEigo sooner or later. I'm hoping that Harmony Gold will give AnimEigo the credit for the restoration process as most of the money from this process came out of their pockets.

Well, AnimEigo licensed the original Japanese version from the main licensor, Harmony Gold. AnimEigo's license likely did expire. It is also likely that Harmony Gold paid AnimEigo some amount to purchase rights to the subtitling, remastering, and whatever other work AnimEigo did to make it presentable for a U.S. audience.

Harmony Gold are a bunch of communists. They try to control EVERYTHING Macross. I can understand protecting a license but they are crazy!

The DVD's are the same, the cases are the same, the liner notes are the same and they all still credit AnimEigo. The only thing that's different about this set is the outer box. AnimEigo's license term ended, so we bought all their remaining overstock and we're making it available for a new lower price.

Robotech.com's new Macross release: $124.99
Current Right Stuf price (that they've had for the last...six months or so?): $113.97 (each set of 3DVDs at $37.99 each)

I think that would make them a bunch of CAPITALISTS, actually. If they were communists, they'd have long ago handed the rights to Macross over to the state. Wink

Hm. Same DVD's, lower SRP, and a prettier box! Who'd a thunk it?

Personally, I feel that the reason Harmony Gold didn't want to let Animeigo renew the series is that they took too long to put it out on dvd, and probably didn't make much profit out of the production costs before the license expired. I mean the online-exclusive business model might help for a niche show like UY or KOR, but it's disappointing for a more-established franchise like Macross which made less money than Robotech.

BTW, Harmony Gold wanted to make these sets available during AnimeExpo but couldn't, so they'll be out right after AnimExpo.

Here's SteveYun's posts about it:
