Comic Party doesn't delve into the subject, so much as use the subject as a backdrop for the things that happen. Just as easily, Comic Party could have been a sports manga. The role of Kazuki as a rookie with talent, who is at first press-ganged into an activity, but later finds enjoyment, and friendship within that sphere, isn't really as setting-specific as Genshiken is as far as anime culture is concerned.

I disagree. (at least, re: the anime, the manga hasn't seen a US release past vol. 4 so I don't know where or how THAT will end out) Comic Party covers various aspects specific to doujinshi creation and the trials and travails thereof. Notably, Kazuki has a first release which sees a LITTLE distribution and some notice from its buyers, but is an obvious "local" item. But after getting some small praise, Kazuki is pushed to be the best doujinshi artist he can be, what this means (in his case) is an AMAZINGLY spot on (in my opinion) misread of how things work as he then tries to compile a work which contains NOTHING of himself but instead is a mishmash of "popular bits" aggregated into a single seemingly not very coherent work. His fans are disappointed by his sudden "commercialism" (not called such) and Kazuki must stand back and reaquaint himself with what he likes about doujinshi and what makes it a worthwhile hobby.

Don't get me wrong, the show is FILLED with "naivetae" and bright-eyed optimism regarding creating your own works and helping your friends within doujinshi fandom. But it also provides an interesting glimpse into why people do that sort of thing and how some people view the hobby. There's also the obvious "winks" to fandom and by and large the show has a pretty good amount of "fluff", but for aspiring artists, ESPECIALLY comic artists, I think it's a slightly inspiring show with an undercurrent of information about how doujinshi fandom functions from the creative side (rather than the buyer side).

I'm not saying that Comic Party is bad (I enjoy both the TP release Comic Party, and the CPM Comic Party compilations) but I think it's more about working your hardest, achieving your potential, and being the best you can be, as opposed to beign about doujin artists, really.

I also think the characters are a bit shallow, but are a lot of fun.
