That's not possible, since NIS licensed Brave 10.

Yeah youtube tags don't mean anything. Listing other shows is just another way to get more searches and video hits.

e.g. Sekirei Season 1 trailer has a Queen's Blade tag but Funimation doesn't have Queen's Blade

Also if videos get taken down (copyright infringement notices) by Funimation doesn't mean they have the license; probably just trying to get good favor from Japanese companies

e.g. A while back there was speculation Funimation had School Days because they took down videos of the anime.

What the hell, Funimation. Your licensing THIS when epics like Mawaru Penguindrum haven't been picked up yet?!?! Do you know how much more money you would make off of that, rather than this piece of garbage?!

I take it you haven't been watching the top-selling anime chart on Amazon.com? Because judging from that, Sekirei: Pure Engagement has been doing fantastic by anime standards, much better than quite a few titles that were reviewed much better. T&A pays the rent, so Funimation swallows their pride and exploits it for all they can in order to afford riskier licenses like The Tatami Galaxy or Mawaru Penguindrum or whatever. Yeah, the latter's fantastic, but it doesn't have the instant semi-mass appeal the trashy stuff does. Though come to think of it, who are all these guys that buy this kind of anime, but not others? Do they consider themselves "anime fans" at all? It's so easy to forget that Internet communities are never representative of the larger population.

This is one point where the Sex & Cash Theory explains the whole issue, despite the name (amusingly) being completely wrong for this instance. Funimation didn't just coast to their present hegemony on DBZ -- after all, Bandai Entertainment had Gundam Wing, Gundam Everything Else, Cowboy Bebop, and Stand Alone Complex. Best as I can tell, these guys know what they're doing.

I like how when funimation licenses a fanservice show, everyone rolls there eyes, but when Sentai picked up a loli show just a few days ago, everyone praised them and say how funimation should learn from their quick rushed out licenses Rolling Eyes

Not to say I look forward to this show, nor that I think Funi is perfect, just sayin

I agree so much. While I hate the fact that Funi picked this up...people forget that basically every non-Viz-or-4Kids anime company licenses fanservice or harem crap like this just as much. Sure Funimation has more of these titles than other companies...but they also have MORE OF EVERYTHING than other companies.

I guess...if nothing else, it's about time that Funi gets something this season. At this point it must have been the only title left Rolling Eyes

[BRS please, Funi?]

I bet their current "exploratory" license is Princess Jellyfish. And I bet a lot is riding on the success or failure of its release. I actually wonder if they're sitting on the rights to a couple Noitamina shows (as part of their deal with them) and are waiting to see if Princess Jellyfish does well enough to fully license further shows that don't consist of Boobies and/or Ass-kickings.

I do agree with this though. I've randomly been somewhat interested in this show and may consider picking it up just to support...different kind of shows, if budget allows.

Now, this anime I'll get on Blu-Ray when it gets released probably next year. I'm just glad that this gets licensed because I really like the ending sequence. Wink

I know this kind of show sells well, but I still can't help but question the state of our industry if these kinds of shows are what are keeping these companies afloat. Seriously, some of these are borderline pornography.

Dare I ask which side of the date line you are talking about when pontificating on "'our' industry"?

To your question: it's doing quite well.
What you meant to question: the state of our fandom if these kinds of shows are what are keeping companies afloat.

I was mostly just talking about the anime industry in general. I really wasn't thinking about it that hard. I've seen lots of people say "our industry", but it really doesn't matter.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

Why can't the booby show I actually like (Manyuu Hikenchou) be licensed? There's already Demon King Daimou for the "lame-action-fantasy-full-harem- except it's actually a parody and there's some full frontal exposure because we ran out of bad and almost OK jokes because this isn't a show like Zombie Deskcar" genre of anime. The only thing this potentially offers over that is S-Cry-Ed references. And the ED.

On another note, why is Bakemonogatari so untouchable? It would probably sell like hotcakes in the US.

License Qwaser too. Now those are some tits and ass shows they can spew everywhere and make bank on.

HAHAHA! Of wait.... you were serious? If you think even for a second that Penguindrum would sell even a third of what High School DxD will sell, you are delusional and in denial. Penguindrum didn't even do that good in Japan.

No-one really knows, but I am of the opinion that the Japanese are demanding huge license fees.

The following is my personal conjecture:

See, no American company wanted to take the risk at the time it was airing 'cause the show is rather strange and they couldn't be sure that it would appeal to the international market. Then when Bakemonogatari turned out to be a massive hit (and I do mean massive; gigantic is probably a better adjective), the Japanese would almost certainly have upped their asking price to unreasonable levels. Sitting on a mound of cash they could afford to be picky. So FUNimation and the rest were stuck with an expensive-to-license title that would be a pain to market despite being so popular in both Japan and overseas.
Additionally, much of the dialogue is Japanese puns and other wordplay, which is very difficult to incorporate into a dub. This means a lot of re-writing of the dialogue from the licensee, which could be time-consuming and therefore expensive. More money to be sunk into a show which already cost a lot to buy the license to; very risky. And FUNimation for one is known for its propensity to dub its shows, especially the ones it intends to be keystone shows with lots of marketing and what-have-you. No dub limits how much the show can sell and therefore make (many Anime fans insist on dubs as a bottom line), and it would have had to sell very, very well in order to recoup costs.

I don't know how accurate all that was, but it is what I believe happened. If you're really curious then send a question to ANNCast via Twitter. I'd love to know if they've heard anything about it.

Edit: My 6,000th post, apparently. Yay,

Yes, finally it happened!!

Also, not surprised at all the people giving the usual "FUNimation, why must you license an ecchi show instead of a high quality show?". Rolling Eyes Stuff like this usually sells (Especially when marketed right, I mean FUNi tries to make everything seem like it's fanservice.), and when it does, it leads to them getting the money to get the shows you want.

Honestly, the argument is getting old, especially when more and more shows in Japan are shows that appeal to the hardcore Japanese otaku.

Try Movies and & TV in general, Sekirei: Pure Engagement got up to like 154 before it started falling below 500. Anime rarely gets that high.

Those ranking are near meaningless because there are no sales figures which in turn makes it unclear if their bestseller ranks are determined by total to date sales or daily(hourly?) totals.

I'd like to see Manyuu Hikenchou here too, and likewise Seikon no Qwaser 1,2, but complaining about it, and lamenting on Highschool DxD is totally ironic. Like Sekirei, both are "Boobies FTW" type shows (Manyuu Hikenchou waay more so, obviously) so if this does well it provides more incentive for Funi or MB or whoever to license those.

Plus, all the whining and complaining here will be like 10x if that got licensed instead Laughing
