Tying =/= decline

Plus, it's only one volume.

I really like One Piece too!

But does anybody know when it became this popular?

Did the manga start selling more when the anime was made?

Or was it a specific arc that saw a huge boost in sales and popularity and only rose from there? (Enies Lobby?)

I realize that sarcasm doesn't translate well on the internet, but usually the presence of a smiley would indicate a lack of seriousness on my part.

One Piece didn't start to sell this much until around 2009.
And around that time, a lot of factors came into play that helped to drastically increase its popularity.

1. One Piece had just entered its 10th Anniversary.

2. The manga was currently in the Marinford War arc, which not only featured some of the strongest characters in One Piece, but it also had the first on-screen deaths of two major characters and it was a big turning point in the direction of the series.

3. There was also the huge hype over the tenth movie, Strong World, which was written and directed by Oda himself.

Not always. But yeah, sarcasm doesn't work with text alone. lol
Maybe a "jk" or "lol" would have been better.

Like you can see it was popular from the beginning. The Anime helped too. There was a massive marketing campaign for Movie 10 and One Piece managed to rise its first printing number from 2.5 Million to 4 Million

Pretty much this. A lot of people attribute it to Strong World catching the 'casual' crowd and bringing people in.

So basically while it was Enies Lobby that started the upward trajectory, it was Sabaody that kicked off the real explosion in the series' popularity, bringing it from "really really big" to "biggest of all-time" status.

It's weird. I'm a huge One Piece fan but Strong World was just another generic anime good guy vs bad guy movie. Honestly I thought the Episode 0 OVA was much more interesting in the end.

The original source is probably 2chan but someone grabbed it, added those arrows and tanslations and than posted it on the AP forums a long while ago. I saved it and uploaded it here. This is also why it only goes up to Volume 58. The numbers are not sales but the number of volumes for the first print run. .

It was popular from the get go pretty much. Arlong arc and Arabasta arc were both very popular. However, it went through a decline during Skypiea as that chart above shows.

Too bad funi didn't get one piece in the first place. To this day I believe that if funi got it first not only would it have been more popular then dbz and naruto were back in the toonami days but currently it would still be strong here and anime would still be stronger after toonami went off the air. Anyway this is great new and maybe One Piece can still become more popular here.
