Ah yeah... take it off, baby... (the shrinkwrap, I mean. Laughing )

edit: Just got a few random items from TRSI, with the Kyubey Valentine postcard. The back of which contains an advertisement letting us know volume 1 of Madoka releases on the 14th. As such, I sincerely doubt this is the 'bonus item' listed at TRSI. I'm inclined to think there is no bonus item and TRSI just put that in there as a placeholder 'in case they needed it'. Perhaps the sales minion can offer some insight?

Both speculations are correct!

When we set up the Madoka releases in our system, we weren't certain if we might eventually have some kind of "gift with purchase" to tie into them. Rather than have to deal with one heck of a mess later if we left it off and then did have a pack-in, we gave each release a placeholder GWP item.

In the end, we didn't end up with a pack-in for Madoka 1, but we did get some sweet Kyubey valentines. Those valentines are going out with shipments until we run out, starting this week. Since we know that some of our customers won't be receiving Madoka for some time (oversees customers combining orders for shipping, for example) but will still want the postcard, we tied the postcard to that un-used GWP item. So even if your copy of Madoka ships in June, Kyubey will still be there, offering to make you his magical girl. We don't advise you take him up on his offer.

The same thing goes for potential pack-ins for volumes 2-3. They're just placeholders for now, and we may or may not end up using them. Rest assured, we'll probably announce it if anything interesting comes of them.

Oh god... I mean, I really like you guys over at TRSI, but that's certainly disappointing.

I got the exact same Kyubey postcard as you did when I *inhales, exhales* got my Madoka LE set(!) today. Hopefully something cool actually will be done for an extra come the release of the thrid and final LE set-- maybe Aniplex ought to do something like Right Stuf did with Revolutionary Girl Utena, providing a gift item to everyone that purchased all three volumes.

Anyway, back to my excitement about getting the LE Set today Very Happy. I've been watching the USPS tracking link like a hawk these past few days, so when I saw early this morning that it was delivered into the university's mailing circulation system, I got it pretty soon afterward. And I must say, I'm quite pleased with how it's been put together. For one, the box is definitely nice, and it was shipped in a good Right Stuf-branded box, so save for a tiny bump in bottom front-corner, it is in absolutely pristine condition. Having both cases + all the inserts in it, the box definitely feels durable as well (and besides, it's not like I'm going to leave it half-hanging off a ledge anytime soon.

The inserts are nice too, for what they are-- fully listening to the first full soundtrack (instead of merely parts of it in youtube videos) will definitely be a treat, the postcards featuring the episode end cards are good quality (I'm still cracking up at the one featuring Mad Max), and the stickers might end up getting some use after all (one them might end up on my sister's white macbook, hah.) Of particular note to me, though, is the Gekidan Inu Curry Art that is featured in the book-- there are about 4 pages worth of Gertud, Charlotte, and their respective familiars (no Elly, poor thing), and I must say that I at least recognize two of them from scans that I've seen from the Production Note! One of the two pages that I have little recollection of seeing before is the one featuring all of of Gertrud's mustachioed familiars, included mustachioed versions of cupids(?) and that iconic painting of Napoleon on his horse. Laughing. This definitely puts me a bit more at ease about not plunking down for the production note, as the Inu Curry's stuff was easily the most appealing factor of said note. Again, its good stuff all around. (Oh, and that 4koma? Yeah, I guess I can sort of see what TKoH was talking about-- maybe the translator(s) didn't want to feel like having to sacrifice any of the English wording for the sake of fitting it within the text bubbles. Still, it seems doable as far as I can tell-- just look at this fan translation that was done with the original comic; save for maybe a few less words in Mami's dialogue box at the bottom right here, the translation seems to be as dense as the official translation.)

Now, as semi-painful it's going to be, I think that I might hold a little bit on seeing all these episodes so soon, at least their dubbed versions. I think I actually want to make the NicoNico stream later tonight my first viewing of the first episode's dub-- it might be more fun that way, honestly-- and then perhaps see all the other episodes on my BD subbed. I think watching all four of the episodes in English will come sometime next week, when I can watch it together with my sister, who is still living close to campus this year). All I've seen of the BD so far has been the Kalafina music video for Magia... and it wasn't as wicked cool as I was hoping it would be (it doesn't help that there didn't seem to be subtitle options, either). I'm no real music video watcher, but... the choreography of Kalafina seemed awkward, feeling both stilted and excessive at the same time. Are a lot of music videos like that nowadays, whether American or (just) Japanese? At least the full song was great (as expected) and the set + costume designs were stylin' (again, as expected, having seen promo shots of the music video before).

If anyone should suffer the disappointment of consumers here, shouldn't it be Aniplex USA? Again, just hope that something cool will be done at some point, as Right Stuf did for Utena by the end of its run with the rose signet ring.

That is what the live-stream of Madoka episode 1 dubbed was.

I got my copy of Madoka bLE vol.1 today and was pretty OK with it until I popped the soundtrack CD in to find that it's all of 28 flippin' minutes long! What's there is pretty good, but come on; I do own other soundtrack CDs and they're not this short. Obviously Aniplex just divided the soundtrack up in 3 parts for more profit, which is not surprising.

It's not enough to make me cancel the other 2 volumes, but it makes it harder for me to justify the cost to myself. Seriously, I'm sitting here listening to it and I suddenly hear something familiar which turns out to be the next disc in the changer, so I go look at the display and it's 28:11. And having it a full-size DVD case is a bit inconvenient, though the case has clips in the front (as if they were going to include something) which makes it a good place to store the Kyubei valentine card and the paper I took (carefully) off the back of the artbox.

Oh well, live and learn. Maybe Aniplex will redeem themselves by giving folks who buy all 3 LEs something worthwhile (like a big chipboard artbox to hold the three LEs in-like that's gonna happen). We'll see.

They divided all the music into three discs, yes, and this has been known for a while.

So what we're actually getting with each LE is one third of a soundtrack? Seems like that much was known for a while, but it's still somewhat misleading. I mean, the bonus CD bundled with my copy of Catherine (the game) had more minutes of music on it than this one, and I didn't have to pay a single extra cent to get the LE. Oh well...

For what it's worth, FLCL, which was half as long, had 3 soundtrack CDs all of which were longer than this. The first 2 had short snatches of music from the soundtrack and short versions of the themes, then the third CD had full-length versions of the songs. Also, many shows have what are called "image songs" which are not actually part of the soundtrack but which are sometimes added to the CD (or realeased on their own CD). It is what it is though.

I decided to pop in the BD and watch the first 2 eps as I had seen them when this was being fansubbed and I wanted to check out the English version of them while eating lunch (I want to wait till I have it all before actually watching the whole show). I have to say the English dub was a bit disappointing. Although I mostly watch subs, I have enjoyed some of Bang Zoom's dubs in the past, but for this one it seems like they sent in the B-squad. It's servicable, no more IMO.

I also found the BD menu to be hard to read. I also noticed that the aspect ratio changes during the show. The opening sequence of Madoka's dream is letterboxed on my (54" HD widescreen) TV although the packaging indicates it's 16:9. It did not seem to foillow any consistent pattern as to which scenes were letterboxed and which were 16:9. It doesn't really bother me (The Dark Knight switches aspect ratios also due to parts of it being filmed in IMAX format), but I wonder if it's a case of what I've heard about different scenes in the same show being animated at different resolutions.

A lot of people complained about how the 4-panel comics were presented, but I didn't see anyone mention they spoiler[had spoilers]. Although I had only intended to watch the first 2 eps but ended up watching all 4; what happens spoiler[in episode 3 is actually a bit predictable if you're paying attention, but it still was strange to haved it spoiled in the last 4-koma, especially since there might be a lot of people blind-buying this since there were no legal means to preview it]. I'll make sure not to look at the other booklets before I watch the rest of the show.

Picture and sound quality on the BD are excellent, as one would expect. The music video in and of itself did not impress me but I like having a full-length version of the ED.

All in all, I don't regret getting this, but I do think Aniplex could have done better value-wise with this.

Well, I think the change in resolutions, or simply whether-to-letterbox-or-not-letterbox, is very much tied to Akiyuki Shinbo's directing style. Plenty of this is done with Bakemonogatari-- the only other show of his that I've seen enough of (so far) to more narrowly define his directing style. Personally, I love it-- it makes the start of each episode feel like a movie to me, an event to be excited for (and at the pace that this show ends up going, it's more often one than not!).

Well... for one, those comics were also released when the episodes came out in Japan in sets of two, with two 4koma per release, so its' no different than the Japanese release in that regard. And also, I thought that kind of thing was to be expected when there are booklet guides released with anime nowadays, or even other films...? Neutral I mean, its kind of obvious that its going to deal with spoilers when in skimming you notice an episode guide , with synopses for each in smaller text among the first few pages. Seeing that at the start, I'd think that the rest of the content is fair game for "spoilers."

That said, considering that this might be the first every special edition of anything that some people blind-buy (which is probably a pretty low number), maybe they should add a slip-off piece of paper over the booklet that says "Thar be spoilers in here!" Laughing Well, at least you know, now. Just be sure to not peek at the guides/4koma for the latter two volumes next time, alright?

EDIT: Oh, and if its of any comfort to you as a collector, the soundtracks for Madoka Magica really can't be gotten anywhere legally beside through the limited edition sets. Plus, the final soundtrack with the third LE is a bit longer than 30 minutes, I think-- and offers what I find to be the absolute best tracks of the entire show (as they should, mainly coming from the last third of the show).

I can only assume due to licensing restrictions, the US release isn't getting the CD of the episode 9 ED. Unless details for that haven't been released yet.

It's not like you have to buy the LE version of it, though. There are non-LE DVD and BD releases as well which are cheaper.

Well, I just got the LE in today for the 1st volume.

It's very good in comparison to what we are commonly getting these days from the dub publishers like Funimation.

It's fairly flimsy in comparison to NISA's sub-only releases, but it's in a normal size box (also a little flimsy) which is nice, but I probably still prefer NISA's releases due to their hard boxes and hard cover art books.

All in all for a release with a dub and with the sound track and with some very cute art cards (if I recall correctly, matching the splash at the end of the episodes within the volume) and a poster, I find it to be good. I would not want to spend this much money for every single show, but for shows like this I wouldn't mind if I'm getting all this stuff and a dub.

Unfortunately, Aniplex is doing much crazier prices with their subtitle-only Fate/Zero release, which makes me very sad. I just can't spend that much that quickly so I'm left out of their super-short cycle LE's when they triple they almost double the price from this point and don't offer a dub.

Of course I realize the Japanese have it worse, but nevertheless I'm still irked by really good shows getting distributed by these guys.

I didn't check out the dub in advance so I'm interested to see what it's like, but as always for me, I'll be ripping the discs first so I am sure that I don't have to worry about damaging discs or packaging.
