At the very least, she did come out in the open and apologize for it, which is always nice. However, I would say her career as a comic author is pretty damn limited from here-on-out.

Acutally, I'd say that her career as an aritst is pretty much over. The best she'll probably be able to do is work as a doujinshi artist under a different name. The Japanese entertainment (commercial arts, music, etc.) market is much less forgiving than the American one. For J-rock fans, recall what happened reccently: A popular band called Psycho le Cemu was immediately booted from their record label because Daishi (the vocalist) was caught doing speed. In America, an offence like this would be lightly tossed aside - after all, rock and roll and drugs go together like peas in a pod. It'd also be interesting to see if/how much plagurism occurs in the American comic industry. |

One only needs to remember the revamped Sentinel that a Marvel Artist had for their new X-men comic. I could imagine Gainax taking suit and the defence saying "BUT THIS ONE HAS A STAR ON ITS CHEST! CLEARLY ITS NOT DERIVATIVE OMGGG!!!" |

The fact that the manga artist "admitted" that she plagirized means nothing. She was most likely forced to "write" an apology by her editor or publisher and then forcefully resign. In fact, I wouldn't even be surprised if she didn't even write that note herself.
Not that she doesn't feel remorseful, I'm sure she does. Just don't take whatever her company forces her to write for PR junk at face value. Honestly, this is what happens when mangaka are under intense pressure to meet weekly deadlines. And sadly, it looks like a lot of people do this all the time. I think the company over-reacted to this "plagirism" as well. Sad, Eden no Hana was fairly popular. I thought it was mediocre shoujo manga myself, but it had a following even among the fanscan scene... Last edited by jennwenn on Wed Oct 19, 2005 8:31 pm; edited 1 time in total |

This is the funniest thing I have ever seen. How can someone be so stupid. All she would had to have done was made just some minor altercations to avoid plagerism and people noticing. Instead, lets copy page for page. Genius. She deserves what she gets.

I like how she drew the bunny hat on that one guy to "differentiate" it. |

God, how could someone not have noticed that? Kodansha needs to hire some better editors, sheesh. |

And that's why, artists, you don't copy from photographs or printed media because someone have already done it and got owned.

I'm kind of surprised Inoue-san hasn't talked about it on his blog. But then he's probably trying to meet his usual deadlines with Vagabond and REAL. Anyway, I'm glad the manga-ka got her comeuppance for pulling a Quentin. It's just a shame Tokyopop won't be able to release the series here, but hopefully Kodansha will reimburse them for the licensing fee.

You really got to respect her for confessing. She knew that the minute she told the truth that the manga would go down the tubes and her career would probably never recover, but despite all this she still felt like she owed her fans something. You got to admit, that takes gull.
I also love the fact that people are still defending her despite the fact that she came clean. They are basically saying to the author "No, you didn't steal anything. You have no idea how it happened" or "It happens all the time in the industry, which makes what you did perfectly okay" and my personal favorite "Just go sit in the corner. Us outspoken Otaku know how it happened. Just stay out of the way." |

Except that the company probably forced her to come clean, and she didn't do it entirely of her free will. |

Yeah, in America the real shocker would be if a rock star WASN'T on some kid of drugs. "Mick, how do you respond to allegations that you've done several performances while under the influence of nothing?" "That's a lie! I'm high all the time! I'm completly wasted right now, in fact! I just took, um, everything! Yeah, every drug ever! I have no idea what year it even is right now! Yeah." "Nice try, Mick, but you got through that entire speech without slurring a single word and you're walking perfectly upright. You're sober out of your mind right now, aren't you?" "Oh, God, it's true! I NEED HELP!" I remember when L' Arc En Ciel was performing the fourth ending song to Rurouni Kenshin, and they actually removed it from the show and replaced it with the previous ending song because one of them had been caught doing cocaine or something...but unlike Psycho le Cemu, L'Arc is still around. Cause they rule. Anyway, I don't think you can look at those comparison shots and not reach the conclusion that the images were copied. It'd be one thing if it was just one random figure, but several images in the same splash panel, all from the same manga...it's just too big of a coincidence for it NOT to have been copied. Really, though, she could have gotten ahold of some Doujins or something if she wanted to copy someone, and no one would have been the wiser. Doujins violate copyrights anyway (luckily no one minds, but they do) so it's not like the creators could have done anything about it. Deciding to copy one of the most popular shonen manga of all time wasn't exactly the smartest move on her part. |

All that over a basketball scene? Yeah, they looked copied and all, but they are just poses... so if someone "copies" a pose they can get in trouble for it?
If thats the case, I'm shocked then the manga-ka of Ikkitousen (Which Tokyopop also has) hasn't gotten in trouble for "copying" Tenjou Tenge. I could maybe expect this sort of thing all the time in Shonen, but Shoujo? O_o |
