The mini-specials are about my least favourite animated You're Under Arrest production, besides maybe the movie, which was an attempt to use the YUA characters in a much more serious story (but they aren't nearly as versatile as the Patlabor characters, so I didn't think they worked too well in that sort of story), but I still enjoy them if I'm in the right mood.

I just wanted to point out one thing: a lot of the stories in the mini-specials are fairly straight adaptations of stories from the manga, particularly the early stories from the first four volumes, which Kosuke Fujishima didn't want published in North America. I guess he was embarrassed by them. (I don't think it's *just* because of the quality of the artwork, which is fairly consistent with the way what was published in North America looks by the third volume, two volumes before what Studio Proteus actually translated.) Fortunately for me, he doesn't seem so concerned with what the French speaking audience thinks of the early stuff, so I have all 7 volumes of the manga in French. The mini-specials are mainly stories from the manga that were much too risqué for the regular animated series; they aired during Wonderful, this "variety" show featuring a variety of porn actr... er, I mean "models", doing things in swimsuits, bikinis, lingerie and other revealing clothing, so they fit in well with the rest of the "programming".

I guess I can believe that. I've seen a copy of the first volume. Besides the fact that the artwork looked very different from the Fujishima we know, Natsumi and Miyuki had a nude shower scene in one of the earliest stories, complete with visible bare breasts.

Bleh. I'm just glad that Fujishima was eventually able to change it into something better.

It can't be THAT bad, especially in comparison to the "No Mercy!" one-shot released last year.

Oh... I forgot about "No Mercy"... haven't seen that one yet. Embarassed And I've only sampled a few episodes of the 2001 TV series. I enjoyed what I saw of those, being pretty close to the older TV episodes (which I liked) in terms of style, but the rest of the episodes could be total crap for all I know, I suppose.

You will hate "No Mercy!" Aside from the horrible animation, practically everything that shouldn't have happened...happened.

- Miyuki and Natsumi are transferred to the LAPD.
- Because they're LAPD, no more skirts.
- They're actually threatening criminals with shotguns. What a way to portray LAPD-style police brutality.
- No more Natsumi Special scooter. Evil or Very Mad
- Honda Today replaced by big, bulky Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser. In effect, Natsumi can't use her feet for side brakes anymore. Evil or Very Mad
- LAPD precinct consists of "Americanized" carbon-copies of the Bokuto precinct: police chief (now a white guy), Ken (white version of Nakajima), Aoi (white version of Aoi, I guess), and Riko (Hispanic version of Yoriko).
- Undoubtedly the single worst depiction of Los Angeles in an anime.

BTW, I took the pain to actually post all the info on the encyclopedia entry.
