I really don't anticipate being around in 2051.

I'm going to be 58 in 2051; I wonder if I still watching anime then. I couldn't choose a year, since I not very clear on what year is most of my favorite anime was released on; I'm getting the Japanese and North American release dates mix up.

I guess for me why I chose 1995 is because I have been a long time older anime fan I have been watching/collecting anime since the mid '80's and 1995 was a significant year highlighting the Sailor Moon era of magical school girls and such. Then following years brought Pokemon Digimon and Yugi oh, Card Captor Sakura, RayEarth, Ceres.

I really don't have a favorite year. Every year had its good series, and bad series. A lot of the "epic series" from the late 90s, were just good series released those years, with nostalgia making the series seem more epic then they were.

I can probably say a least favorite year. 2006 basically tied with 2007 in terms of the amount of anime released that year.

2006 had its classics like Higurashi, Kanon, Welcome to the NHK, Shakugan no Shana, Ouran High School Host Club, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora

but the year also had a lot of mediocre titles and bad titles too. Such Chronic anime production could probably have left to the anime industry going down in the middles 00s.

I chose "other" because I really don't have a favorite year as far as when shows were released. I've only ever rated 11 titles (out of 285 in "seen all") as "Masterpiece" and the years of production are all over, ranging from 1984 to 2003.

2004 is the year that is big for me because that is the year I began collecting anime on DVD and watching heavily.

While I could say that my favorite anime year goes back before 1995, Because the anime industry was still in it's infancy and weren't many shows I could say I enjoyed because I was still watching stuff raw and the shows that were licensed I really didn't care for. Think the only series I was interested in was Outlaw Star, Big O, Jubei-chan the Ninja Girl', and a few series that weren't even licensed yet. I picked 2004. That year gave me 'Madlax', 'My-HiME', 'Re: Cutie Honey', Kurau Phantom Memory', 'Kannazuki no Miko', 'Rozen Maiden', and the (late Satoshi Kon's) 'Paranoia Agent'. I could go on but my list gives some idea. But when I first checked into My-HiME's new show that picked up for me. It was a fun year. Now I'm kind of bummed out.

I chose "other" because I do not have a favorite year.
I have never once given any thought at all to the year in which a show was made. I do not know the year in which any of my favorite shows were made. I just know, or think, that some are relatively older than others.

This is a tough one for me, but I'd have to go with 2009. Mainly because of Bakemonogatari and Eden of the East, which are two of my all-time favorites. Evangelion 2.0 is another standout for me, because it completely turned around my feelings for a franchise that I had previously hated. Overall, 2009 seems to have left the biggest impression on me.

2010 would be a very close second. For all intents and purposes, I'd consider it tied if I didn't have to make a choice. Three of my seven "masterpieces" are from 2010 (Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi, The Tatami Galaxy, and Time of EVE). And don't forget Panty & Stocking, I didn't rate it a masterpiece but it was pretty darn good. In terms of quantity, I think 2010 has produced the greatest number of titles that I have enjoyed.

1998 gets 3rd place since the first anime I ever saw included some of the "iconic" titles from that year, including Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Trigun. Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz and Initial D are also on that early list, albeit a bit later on.

2004 gets an honorable mention. BECK, Howl's Moving Castle, Samurai 7, and Samurai Champloo are some of my favorites from that year.

I almost went with 2001, as my two favorite anime movies came out in 2001 (Spirited Away & Millennium Actress), but the shear amount of great series from 2002 that have already been mentioned cannot not be denied.

Well, I just spent about an hour collecting data since I just couldn't resist once this got dug up. Lets see if I agree with the data.

  • I only recorded the numbers for TV shows, Movies, and OVAs that I ranked as a 7 out of 10 or higher, since that's my minimum for "good" (a 6 is just OK).

  • The sample size is 233 total entries out of a possible 355. I also excluded DVD only episodes that are marked as OVAs (like the ones for The Second Raid or Cat Planet Cuties) and any other kind of special.

  • For a while years 06 and 07 were neck and neck, and then 06 pulled away. Then 08 started rising up fast and took second. But once I started recording my 8/10's, 2007 left everyone in the dust. So it seems 06 and 08 are top heavy, but with little depth. Meanwhile, 2007 has a strong top and a strong bench, making it very well-rounded.

  • Since 2002 is a popular pick, the number I have for there is 12, which is good for 8th place. It has a good top with the likes of Princess Tutu, AZD, FMP, and Haibane Renmei, but it thins out rather quickly with things like Abenobashi and Ai Yori Aoshi. There's really not much I'm interested in from that year either when I look over the list of what aired from then.

So then, the numbers:

Coming in third place, we have 2009 with 21 entries. Top three from there are 1) Summer Wars 2) Denpa teki na Kanojo and 3) Eden of the East.

Coming in second place, we have the year 2006 with 25 entries. My top three from that year would probably be 1) Kanon 2) Death Note and 3) Black Lagoon

And coming in pretty far above those two is 2007 with 34 entries. Now, there is no top three for this year because there's no way I could decide between TTGL, 5 cm/s, Lucky Star, Minami-ke, ef - a tale of memories, Bamboo Blade, or Moribito. Let's not forget Baccano, My Bride is a Mermaid, Eva 1.0, Clannad, Big Windup, or the plethora of other shows I really enjoyed from that year. Man, when I really look at it, 2007 had some pretty sweet stuff.

So in summation, the numbers and data say that 2007 was my favorite year, and my heart and brain agree wholeheartedly with that.

My favorite year of anime is 1997 because that's the year that I started watching Toonami. Smile I became interested in watching the shows featured there since then, until Toonami's end in 2008.

I'd also vote for 2007 followed closely by 2006.

2007:
Ghost Hound
Shion no Ou
Moyashimon
Baccano!
Mononoke
Dennou Coil
Seirei no Moribito
Oh! Edo Rocket
Claymore
Hidamari Sketch
Nodame Cantabile

2006:
Bartender
Hataraki Man
Black Lagoon: Second Barrage
Welcome to the NHK!
Saiunkoku Monogatari
REC

The immediate post-crash years 2008-2010 were largely busts. In 2011, I can list four shows that might be competitive with the ones above -- Hyouge Mono, Level E, Madoka Magica, and Usagi Drop. My bet is I'll end 2012 with a similar number including Tsuritama, Uchuu Kyoudai, and Sakamichi no Apollon.

I'll go with 2002, for all the titles mentioned before plus my personal favorite-Please Teacher! (yes, it premiered in December of 2001 but the bulk of the episodes came out in 2002.)

For me 1997 (and then the years leading up to that point).

This was the year one of my favorite animated series of all time aired.

Also visually, I believe this to be the height of traditional cel drawn animation.
