Pardon me, but I thought that such a long post merited the courtesy of a reply.

I'm working on my 'manga priorities list', but that's a little harder for me. It's also shorter, which means I'd probably benefit more from suggestions. However, I don't want to eat this thread again too soon, so if it comes, it might be a while. (And there was much rejoicing)

EricDent wrote:

Priority Score 5
Princess Tutu: Should be in anybodies anime collection IMO.
Great story, fun characters, sometimes very sad, & sometimes outright hilarious (especially Mr. Cat). One of the best dub performances by Luci Christian ever.

I have been lead to believe that it is all this and more; my copy is on the way!

EricDent wrote:
Wolf's Rain: Bandai is gone, the price will go through the roof soon, so grab it before it costs a small fortune.

I've bee working on this one; the prices seem to have gotten worse in just the few days since I started this silly little project.

EricDent wrote:
Priority Score 4
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad: it's now called Mongolian Chop Squad now, probably cause the actual musician named Beck got tired of people requesting songs from this show. The dub (especially the singing) blows the Japanese version out of the water IMO. It's really cheap (the SAVE has a reversible cover), so get it!

I'm already committed to the single-volume release as I already have volume with the amp box and volume four. Really, I just have to get on with it and swallow the expensive of volume five, which is the only real sticking point.

EricDent wrote:
Haibane Renmei: With the upcoming re-release, there really is no excuse not to own it. I plan on grabbing it, cause I missed out the first time. Great story, great atmosphere, good characters, and an anime that makes you think.

Haibane Renmei is a series that I've wanted to see for so long the the desire has gotten sort of muted by familiarity. Fortunately, the Anime Classics release should make it safe to wait until I'm good and ready. In a way, I think that I want to save this one until I have just the right circumstances to make me really want to or even really need to see it.

EricDent wrote:
Spice & Wolf: Only seen the first season. Personally I would hold off until the new release. It's a combo pack (DVD/Blu-Ray) with BOTH seasons.

That's my plan. I loved the three episodes that I saw of it (I only meant to watch two as a sample, but couldn't help myself)

EricDent wrote:
Priority Score 3
Baccano!: Really?! You don't own this yet? Sure it's pretty violent, and very very bloody. Sure the plot is rather hard to follow sometimes, however it has great characters, a pretty cool look, and one of the best dubs ever.

Everybody seems to be pushing this title, so maybe I'd better jump on it like I should've with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

EricDent wrote:
Emma: A Victorian Romance: Personally I would wait until a sale.
It's a great story, and a great set of characters. The only major flaw (IMO) is the lack of a dub. The lack of a dub for this title makes ZERO sense, since it's set totally in England...

Yeah, I know, that's what's holding me back too. I'm a lifelong godless dubbie and it does seem like a show set in England should have one.

EricDent wrote:
Galaxy Angel: Covers all of them. Not really worth the time and $ to try to grab all of them, some of which were never dubbed.

I have a slightly strange, oddly personal reason for wanting to see Galaxy Angel, although I probably won't bother watching the ones with an English dub.

And, of course, I have no interest in Galaxy Angel Rune. (Although I'd almost want to own some spare copies of volume one to give away as gag gifts. Seriously, one episode and a concert? That's hilarious!)

EricDent wrote:
Koi Kaze: If you can handle the "creepy" factor of the plot, then go for it. It's OOP, so good luck hunting it down.

I almost relish certain species of creepy and uncomfortable things. I don't like them when they're fetishized, but I find them fascinating when used with some care and purpose.

EricDent wrote:
Millenium Actress: Another OOP title, it's an amazing movie. Get it ASAP! I think it should have won an Acadamy Award.

I'm definitely going to append a cop of this one to an order soon, provided that it doesn't slip my mind. It's the Satoshi Kon film that I most want to see, but the one that I seem to be having the hardest time getting around to seeing.

EricDent wrote:
Priority Score 2
Azumanga Daioh: This might be going OOP soon, not sure if Section 23 even has the license anymore. It's funny, cute, very heartwarming (and sad when it ends). Great characters, great dub, and really fun to watch. I seriously wish somebody would smack Azuma upside the head for not letting anybody try Yotsuba!

I've actually seen Azumanga Daioh already and by gum does it play all of my strings surprisingly well. (In contrast to Lucky Star, which wasn't bad, but nowhere near as effective and sometimes very annoying) It's a little hard to get, which is what's working against it. I do want it, but I think that it'd be a pain to scrounge up.

[quote="EricDent"]Black Lagoon: Should be a level 5 IMO: One of the best action shows ever. Great characters, amazing dub, and just plain awesome. With the upcoming Re-Release this should be a day one purchase (especially since both seasons come in the Combo Pack).
Now if only they would announce when Roberta's Blood Trail is coming out...and if they can get the dub voices again.[/quote[

This one is on order (along with the new release of Serial Experiments Lain) right now, which works out as a sweet bargain.

I really hope that they get the original English cast back for the OVA. They're rare lightning in a bottle.

EricDent wrote:
Gunslinger Girl (covers all of it): With the recent Classic Line release having all 3 parts, it's not that hard not to grab it. Should be under $50 (less if you hunt). Great show with a very thought provoking story.

I really want to see Gunslinger Girl, but FUNImation is a stable publisher, as far as we can tell, and the series doesn't seem likely to become scarce, so I'm gambling that I can let this one linger on.

EricDent wrote:
Hellsing Ultimate: Again the re-release will be here soon. That comes with vols. 1-4, and then later 5-8 come out as well. Though no date for 9-10 has been noted. AMAZING dub (yes they are having the rest dubbed with the same voices) it should be watched in English no matter what IMO. Plus it should be noted that the re-releases are Combo Packs (DVD & Blu-Ray). Another must have for any anime fan IMO.

This one is definitely one that I want, but my sense of symmetry and order finds the prospect of two for episode releases and a two episode release unpleasant. I've read the manga, which I like, but this kind of series isn't quite my natural ally, so I feel comfortable seeing if I can hold out for a complete release some time in the further future.

EricDent wrote:
Master Keaton: Way OOP, and rather pricey. The final volume (8) is over $50 used on Amazon. Unless you get really lucky (brag!) and see all 8 at a reasonable price, you might want to pass on it.
It's a good show, just it's very episodic, and sometimes the stories are rather odd. Plus since it's kinda "old" it does cover some rather dated subject matter, also the animation style does look a bit odd sometimes.

I have no objection to things that look old, in fact, I kind of relish it. Hell, one of my favorite anime is 1979's Galaxy Express 999. Outside of certain haircuts and clothes from roughly 1972-1992, the concept of dated doesn't matter much to me.

I hadn't realized that it would be a pain to gather up. As I might have mentioned, my list could use a lot of research to sort out the scarcity questions.

EricDent wrote:
My-HiME: Bandai is out of business, so the price will skyrocket. If you liked this, you should grab it while you can.

My-Otome: See My-HiME. Though this one is a tad "darker" in the begining.

These shows are a little vexing, because they're more curiosities than burning desires. I'm not sure how to handle it now that the question has become more immediate. I almost think that I might give them up as something that might've been nice, but could get by without and not mind.

EricDent wrote:
Project A-ko FINAL: I say avoid all the sequels to Project A-KO, they are no where as good as the first one.

I actually saw these already, many years ago on VHS rented from a Hollywood Video. I know that they're not great, but I have a nostalgic attraction to them.

EricDent wrote:
The Irresonpsible Captain Tylor (Both): Maybe when Right Stuf has a sale on their products. It has a great dub, fun characters, and a fun story. Though even with the OVA it's still an unfinished story.

I'm fond of Kōichi Mashimo, so I'm interested for that. I'm glad to hear an endorsement of the English dub. I hadn't heard that it was an complete story, which is annoying, but something I can accept, especially if I more or less see it coming. This is another that lacks urgency because the publisher and availability of it seem stable.

EricDent wrote:
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (includes movie): Bandai is now kaput, so this very very popular show will go through the ceiling pricewise really quickly. So if you liked it, grab it ASAP.

GAH! Bandai, why must you force my hand? I'm a little equivocal about this one because it seems a little outside of my wheelhouse, even though some of the right people have endorsed it. I guess that I'll have to try to see if I can hack something together.

EricDent wrote:
Welcome to the NHK: Yes it's a SAVE (reversible cover), but grabbing all the 6 singles will be rather hard. I had to buy the last one on Right Stuf (that's when it was being released). Very dark humor, but fun characters. Good dub, and overall worth a purchase.

if it wasn't for my horse, i wouldn't have spent that year in college... I mean, if it weren't for volume six, this would be a slam dunk. I'm very interested, but my desire isn't burning and the rest doesn't seem scarce, so I'm going to see if I can wait a chance at a copy out or just get sick of waiting.

EricDent wrote:
Priority Score 1
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (covers all of them): Not sure if Section 23 even has this anymore. It says all of them are OOP on DVDaf. Fun characters, funny story, and a pretty good dub.
Dash is a tad different, but it is worth the time IMO.

My interest in this is the byproduct of my fondness for old OVAs and my completionist tendencies. There was a 'All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku - The Whole Kitten-Kaboodle Collection', but it seems to have gotten scarce. I might just give up on the other parts of the franchise and settle on the easier to get parts, or do it piecemeal if that's easier.

EricDent wrote:
Flag: Very underrated anime! As usual since Bandai is going kaput, it's way OOP. So if you have the chance to grab it for a decent price, I say go for it. Though the ending is one of those "slap you in the face" endings...

With the fall of Bandai, this feels a lot more urgent. I'm really interested in its narrative approach, however gimmicky, and themes, so I think that I'll try to snap it up soon.

Goddamn it, Bandai!

EricDent wrote:
Cowboy Bebop: OK again Bandai is gone, if you don't jump on this one ASAP it's gonna be really really expensive. Always considered one of the best anime shows ever, with great music & characters.

This should be a required purchase for any anime fan IMO.
...

Trigun: Another "must have" title IMO. Great characters, good story (big deal it goes away from the manga), and a good dub. The movie should be included with the purchase, if you do buy it. The new voices (on the dub) match up pretty well to the older voices.
...

Outlaw Star: OK why don't you own this yet? It's a great show, sure it has some flaws, but it's very watchable. After the Bandai crash, this will go way up quick, since it's considered a classic.
Just avoid the "sister" show Angel Links at all costs...

These three are in a weird place for me. On one hand, I like them all a lot; Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime of all time, but the thing is, I've also see all three several times over. I watched all three several times over on Toonami and Adult Swim and a friend of mine had a Trigun set that was the village bicycle among my friends. They're lower priority items because I already have so much experience with them that I think I can comfortable forego them. In the case of Cowboy Bebop, I'm gambling that somebody will see and be able to seize the opportunity that the sweet new Japanese Blu-ray release represents.

EricDent wrote:
Planetes: Another very overlooked show. It has a fun story, good characters, and a fun dub. It makes space seem pretty fun, which IMO NASA needs to do ASAP.

Yes, willag already sold me pretty well on this one and it seems easier to gobble up than I thought. It's another where the death of Bandai will force my hand... and wallet.

EricDent wrote:
Priority Score 0
Mezzo DSA: Really?! Why a zero? It's not the "naughty" adult version. This show has a very kick-butt amount of action, a bunch of fun & great characters. A very good dub (you will never look at Luci Christian the same after this) and overall worth your time. It might be going OOP soon, so grab it while you can.

It's only down there because I've seen it already. (I also saw the adult version of the original OVA because it happened to be the cheapest available when I bought it... as somebody who has barely watched any pornography before... it was unsettling) I thought that it was a lot of fun, especially Andy McAvin's scene-stealing excellence as Kurokawa, but I wasn't sure if it was a well that I'd go back to after the first time.

Cake cake cake cake cake cake cake...

I'd be hesitant to say Captain Tylor has a great dub. It has Crispin Freeman and Rachel Lillis as lead roles, and they make for some pretty good band-aids. Even though I love Lisa Ortiz, she wasn't exactly at her tip top here, especially since the had to pull double (well, triple, I guess, if you count the twins separately) duty for main characters. The rest of the crew members were serviceable at best and didn't cause any kind of detriment to my viewing of the show (though the big wigs that hate Tylor come close to hampering it, but they aren't big enough). I mean, even though I hated the show, it's not because of the dub. It adequately got through the emotions and thoughts it needed to.

It's certainly not bad, but I'm hesitant to even call it good, let alone great, and I'd ultimately put it between good and passable. It's just...there and it's not the kind of dub you'd bring up when talking about great dubs.

I almost wish I still had my DVDs so I could be more detailed instead of going off of memory. Almost.

@ Surrender Artist: the total runtime for Galaxy Angel Rune volume one is 75 minutes...not that it makes much difference, but yeah. Volumes two through four are 108 minutes.

I've been thinking of buying Kimi no Todoke-From Me to You but I can't afford it this month. Is this series going to be around for a while longer or will it start going OOP?

Who can say? There's no counter on any of the sets yet at TRSI, for what it's worth. They did just start coming out this year. Perhaps TRSI will put them up on their Christmas sale. Your best bet would be to periodically check with TRSI and see if they get a counter on them and snap them up if they do.

My collection is quite small, since I only spend money on titles I really love. I'm considering buying Spice and Wolf, both seasons. I am hesitating as for the moment I'll get it, since I have to pay 75 euros for the two seasons combined. I know, it's not that much, but it's good to think about the things you buy, right?

Since Willag and Surrender Artist love Birdy the Mighty so much, I looked if it was available on Region 2 DVD and hey: it is! I never just buy a series I have never watched before, but maybe I'll do it this time. I have one question though: what's with that revealing outfit Shocked? Now I have to go (swimmin'!), but I'll read the synopsis later.

Hey, look! I'm making a post in this thread that's not a gigantic, point-by-point reply to a point-by-point reaction to my purchase priorities list!

The world is upside down!

I'm happy to see you interested and I hope that you buy it an like it; I'd hate to feel as though I'd misled anybody. I think that there's enough broad commonality in our tastes that it's a safe bet for you. Just in case, I'll offer a surety: If you end up disappointed, you get to sock me in the face for free. Don't worry if you don't have a good punch; I've got a glass jaw and will go down real easy.

Well, you see, she's originally from a planet entirely covered in pudding, so it's a swimsuit so she's read to roll around in pudding at a moment's notice.

Why do I not think that helped any... Freedom of movement? I think that's the answer that men who know nothing about women's clothing are supposed to answer to questions like this.

I suppose that it's meant to be some kind of uniform, but more likely its a reminder that series began in a magazine with a mostly male audience. It was like that in the original manga, the OVA adaptation of that manga (also good, but not as good and hard to get nowadays) and the revived manga. There's a supporting character who dresses in a 'dubious' fashion too. (Although the female antagonist in the second season pretty mostly wears sensible military fatigues)

It always give me a little pause too, but despite the costume, the series doesn't really lean on fanservice. (There's no bouncing, errant ass shots or involuntary exposure) I can't really remember any instances that stood out, but I might have overlooked it. (There's some idol photoshoot stuff that might quality, but it's not much, tends to be parodical, culminating with the character asked to be, "a sexy globe," and in its last instance, leads into to awesomeness) Whatever the case, Birdy might be dressed that way, but it's never the point, never gets in the way and is never torn apart in revealing ways. So I do swear on my reputation as a prudish stick-in-the-mud. (who nonetheless liked Lupin III ~The Woman Called Fujiko Mine~; hmmm...)

Enjoy swimming. I haven't done that in ages. I should, I always loved it, even if the Oregon Department of Transportation kept trying to blow me up with dynamite when I was resting on the beach.

I think it's worth pointing out that despite being on the skimpy side, it's actually fully functional armor. There's a scene in the second season where someone tries to impale her with their claws, but the armor breaks their hand. Also, I think the idea of maneuverability has more weight here when you consider just how fluid Birdy moves. With the way she moves (jumping from building to building) and the way she fights, she needs as little resistance as she can get. I mean, I'm not doubting there's a titillation factor going on, but it's more practical than any other skimpy battle outfit.

I wouldn't call it a fan-servicy show. There's no accidental falling and groping moments or low angle panty shots, etc. There is if I recall correctly one or two moments coming out of a regeneration chamber that you might see some gluteus maximus from a distance, but its not for titillation.

In the manga other "officers" wear similar uniforms, I think one of the guys does too. As far as armor in the manga Birdy has some kind of shielding or her skin is super tough that bullets don't penetrate, but it does hurt and cause pain.

Overall, I really enjoy Birdy The Mighty and own the OAV and the Decode show. The first and second season of Decode are a little bit different and some people react strongly to that. I like both of them, but have more of a preference for the second season.
