so they changed the rating because they don't want to restrict younger audiences?

I hope when the movie is released on DVD it isn't R15. That would mean they cut out or censored a lot of scenes important to the story. I would hate that. I want the movies to be as close to the manga and anime TV series as possible.

Yep. Releasing a film in only Adult Movie theaters, which is likely what it would have done, would have killed the profits they were trying to make.

err... but...well... this material is pretty dark.

I mean, if this doesn't count as 18+ then almost nothing does.

I guess they didn't want to confuse this anime with a hentai/eroge.

They must of had to edit some parts of it to get it down to that rating.

Again this nonsense you have been spreading over MAL too sigh...

What adult movie theater??? Which one?? Had it had 18+ it would simply mean no people under 18 would be allowed in.

ITS NOT A PORN movie!

You need to go out more seriously, so you get to know when you go to the cinema if a movie states 18+ only it does not mean you will get EXPLICIT sex content.

As far as I know in America, movie theater chains won't run 18+ movies. Maybe its different in Japan, but thats what I'm going by.

Boy this thread sure has lots of people who know nothing of Japanese movie ratings trying to comment on Japanese movie ratings.

Oh, thats interesting to know then, to know how they roll over there...my apologies, I was disrespectful.

The issue then is that you believe everything works like in the US...

If a movie gets R18+ (Japan) it only means minors wont be allowed in.

Here is one of the most famous movie theaters in Japan and how the handle movie ratings, in english as well for better understanding:

http://www.wasedashochiku.co.jp/en.html

Get to the bottom and you will see the ratings movies get and how then handle them, you will notice that R18+ tell you: no person under 18 is allowed to watch the movie.

Here from famous cinema sunshine, check the bottom too and you will see they handle r18+ perfectly fine:

http://www.cinemasunshine.co.jp/theater/kahoku/schedule/

Some are seeing R18+ here and instantly thinking hentai/eroge...

It sounds like bragging but I know Japanese movie theaters personally so I know R18+ means only that and they are scheduled in any cinemas.

If you want the equivalent in the US, I think it has been pointed out here and there that R18+ = NC-17

Except NC-17's a death knell as well, even for South Park.

I've been living in Japan for more than eight years, and I can't recall an R-18 movie ever playing at the multiplexes in my town. Art house theaters occasionally show them, but not the theaters at the big shopping centers.

Well, I dunno in other cities/towns, I have only checked cinemas in Tokyo/Yokohama, but that said r18 does not mean porn content, maybe you have not really paid attention before much?

You dont need to believe me, refer to the above link (or search cinemas homepages) and see how cinemas show r18+, but again, r18+ does not necessarily mean porn so I really surprised how some made a fuss and immediately said OH! HENTAI!

I dont think there are any r18+ currently in cinemas, but look at the movie shame from 2011:

https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:-oIWSws15m8J:www.wasedashochiku.co.jp/lineup/2012/theskinilivein.html+&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk

Check it at the right and you will see it played in that cinema (and multiple other if you check), but since it seems this had HIGH SEXUAL SCENES (no penetration thou, again r18+ does not necessarily mean = PORN/HENTAI = penetration/similar)

I think the issue is that you of the US believe its the same rating, if 18+ means = porn over there = adult movie cinemas.

cinemasunshine: look for Do-ga-ni ※R18+ : Unitedcinemas - Niigata

https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Og_zPmO0L3wJ:www1.cinemasunshine.jp/okaido/schedule/+&cd=7&hl=en&ct=clnk

Movies work basically the same in Japan as here, though a bit different in terms of content and actual numbers.

Quote:
Unrestricted (No Adult Supervision Required For Minors)

G: General Audiences. All ages admitted.
Examples: Almost all American Animated Films, Doraemon, Detective Conan, Pocket Monsters, One Piece, Pretty Cure, Naruto, Ultraman, the Harry Potter franchises, Terminator

PG12 (Kids under 12 recommended to have an adult guardian, but not manditory):
Examples: Fate/Stay Night:, Fist of the North Star: The Legends of the True Savior, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Crows Zero, Gantz, Tales from Earthsea, Princess Mononoke, Sex and the City, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, Shutter Island, American Resident Evil movies, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lupin III, Godzilla

Restricted Movies (Japanese Cinema required to card viewers)

R15 (Teenagers 15 and Above May Go Unsupervised)
Examples: Battle Royale, Saw franchise, Sweeney Todd, The Descent, 300, Kill Bill

R18
Examples: Lust, Caution, Ai no Corrida, Eastern Promises, Eyes Wide Shut, Jackass: The Movie, Bully

So basically it'll only be able to have Battle Royal/Saw/Kill Bill levels of violence I suppose.
