Alright, here's my 2012:

Anime: Total: $2,068.05
    -DVD: $458.49
    -BD: $835.43
    -Combo: $784.03

>Funimation: $864.07
>Sentai: $66.55
>Bandai: $204.21
>Aniplex: $374.92

NOTE: I spent more money on a dead company that I hate than I did Sentai. I spent more money on one volume of Madoka than I did on Sentai. I guess that's what happens when you have bad dubs, questionable subtitle translations, release stuff DVD-only, poor QC, and unbelievably cheap packaging in an era where collectors are once again being recognized. Step your shit up, Sentai.

Manga: $0

Figures: $1,209.67

Other: $59.60

GRAND TOTAL: $3,337.32

Differences from last year:
Anime - -299.80
DVD - -606.44
BD - -218.77
Combo - +535.31
Manga - -99.07
Figures - +692.44
Total - +319.52

So I spent less on BDs, signicantly less on DVDs, but my purchase of Combos jumped way up there. Thanks Funimation limited editions! +700 on figures is crazy. Then again, I didn't start purchasing figures until midway through 2011, so it's not crazy to think that this is about what I'd spend in a full calendar year.

Oi. I need to spend less money. Hopefully cutting back on figures will fix that. I aim to keep figures in the 500-600 range, and I think I can do that. Right now I only have two on preorder for ~140, so I'm good so far!

That said, I do plan on getting the Gurren Lagann BD box, which is currently $520, so what do I know about saving money? Hey, Exchange Rate! If you wanna hit that magical 100:1 by the time June comes around, I'd love you forever.

A One Piece binder and three H-Games. I don't think my taste in porn games is something to discuss, so I threw them under "Other". Wink

Wow, I thought I bought a lot of manga, but you have me beat hands down. At least on amount spent. I dunno if that's from buying a lot of OOP stuff, but you must have quite the library there.

Just a thought and not trying to be rude: How are some of you guys able to budget things when you spend several thousand a year on acquiring anime, manga, figurines, etc... I wouldn't be able to spend that much money a year on anime, even on the annual budget I get right now with my current job.

Prioritization. I'm single, earn decent money, and don't do much saving for the future. Once I take care of my mortgage payment, phone, internet, electric, condo association fee, food, insurance, and computer payment I'm pretty much free to spend the remainder on whatever I want. This is what I've chosen to spend it on.

@ Ggultra2764 - I do what you are not supposed to: deficit finance (i.e. credit cards). You know, basically mortgaging my future to satisfy my present whims.

*sigh*

@Ggultra2764

It is discretionary income. I'm at a different point in my life than you. I'm well established with no debts and a decent income. You on the other hand likely have a whole lot more time to indulge your hobby than I do, so it is a trade off.

@st_owly

Your yearly manga purchases, what is that in volumes??

compound interest, my friend! compound interest.
a tiny bit into your retirement now will make you richer than investing a lot 10 years later.

@patatochobit

Not possible, I'm already retired, have been for a few years now. In any case, while compound intrest can be a good deal, the current rates for a "tiny bit" is currently substantially below 1% and is likely to stay there for the forseeable future.

For my part a lot of my spending was back when I didn't have car bills to worry about. A good deal of the rest came from using up my lines of credit by not taking said bills into account. Also, I keep my food budget as niggardly as possible.

@Alan - By my calculations, that is roughly 260 volumes of manga. I say roughly, because at the con I went to, I bought a large number of volumes from one vendor, and they didn't give me an itemised receipt, so it just went into my budget spreadsheet as one item entitled "Pile o'manga from con" at £109.00, and I didn't think to itemise it separately. (Specifically, I managed to count 246 + unspecified number around 15) The average price per volume works out at £5.92, which isn't bad considering there's quite a few omnibus releases in there. It helps greatly that my local comic shop has all manga on buy 2 get 1 free all the time.

For contrast, I bought 23 volumes of manhwa, 6 artbooks and 12 novels.

As for being able to afford all this stuff, once I've paid my rent and eaten for the month, I have some spare money. Probably not so much this year. I'm looking to cut back compared to last year.

Heeeeh... I'm so jealous of you people, having anime stuff available in your country and a budget to indulge in it. I have neither. I think if I accounted my yearly expenses in anime/manga it wouldn't amount to more than the equivalent to 100 dollars, which is what I can afford to spend in conventions for the occasional figurine or random merchandise. I did once import some Artbooks from Japan, but I'm never doing it again, the shipping was ridiculously expensieve
