Actually there are therapists who use pop culture in just that way. I've seen books on "cinema therapy" in our library. And thanks for reviewing Kingyo Used Books, one of my favorite recently translated manga. |

I've heard of psychologists who often used Pokemon's Charizard while dealing with traumatized children as a symbol of strength but this takes it to eleven.
Looks like a more realistic version of Welcome to the NHK from the looks of it but without dealing the hikikko--  I don't remember how to write it.

I agree strongly. The only problem I had with this series is that it piqued my interest in stories that I would never have the opportunity to read, which made it too much of a masochistic experience. |

This is certainly true. Ah, copyright. I guess I can stop waiting for volume five to appear, now. It's too bad things like Kingyo Used Books don't fall under "fair use" w.r.t. the copyrights of the manga covered. |

Crap. I was just wondering if there was a volume five out, and now I find out there isn't and probably never will be.
I found it to be interestingly quirky in its characters and stories, as well as mentioning manga I'd never heard of. I also liked the afterwords from the guy who owned the second hand manga shop, very informative. Shame. Still, the fact that we got four volumes at all of this series is still a good thing, and I shall re-read it at the weekend. |

You know I'm starting to think that Shaenon should just be made co-author of the column since she's written so much of it, which is in no way meant to be a complaint since I always like the manga she talks about. One quick question though, is Kingyo still on-going in Japan?

It's on volume 14. 
Here's the link for confirmation. I really liked this manga (I have the four volumes) so I'm irritated that I'll never get the rest in English. I understand the difficultly of getting permission from other publishers for manga featured in Kingyo (I think there were a few from extinct companies?) but I really liked how each chapter introduced a manga I never heard of or an artist that was never published in the U.S. |

I've seen "Kingyo Used Books" before myself. I remember a few of those volumes. The first volume had a pretty obscure manga called "Billy Puck." It was about a detective that worked in both Japan and the United States. And he wore a cap that was similar to the cap Cilan wore in "Pokemon Black & White." It had a Japanese-American who dressed a lot like the character in that manga. From what I've heard about the creator of that manga,he passed away early in his career or something.
It's a shame that there aren't any more volumes of this manga in this country. It was a pretty good manga. And the cute girl on the cover ain't too bad either.

Well that was a punch to the gut. I thought it had been a while since volume 4 came out, but it never occurred to me that this series had been cancelled in America.
That is ... just intensely depressing.
Japanese copyright law doesn't really have a 'fair use' clause, from my understanding. You either pay reeeeeally close attention and get the permissions, or do stuff like "S*lor M*on" to mask it. When I was reading Kingyo, I thought about how hard it must have been to get the permissions to allow the series to exist. And then it occurred to me how much harder it would have been for Viz, or Shogakukan ... whoever handled that for America. It never occurred to me until right this second how Pornography and Copyright are treated the same in Japan. Put up a tiny black spot and you're good to go. |

I like the style and design, but going by that cover it must be from the mid 80's as that skirt is much too long by todays manga hem lines.

For personal reasons I've had to ask Shaenon to fill in more than usual over the last few months. I love her manga writings!! She used to do a personal column on LJ called "Overlooked Manga Festival," as many folks probably know. |

Yeah, it sort of sucks, really. Japanese manga publishers are hyper-cautious about using any real brand names, references, etc., at least to Japanese stuff. If it's American pop culture and brands they don't care as much. Of course then when the manga is translated it's the reverse, and you can talk about Gundam all you want (as opposed to talking at "G--dam" in the original Japanese manga), but you have to erase all the Adidas and Nike logos. |

Two quick thoughts:
1. I will read anything Shaenon writes about manga - her Overlooked Manga Festival series is still one of the best pieces of writing about manga out there on the internet. 2. It really sucks that Kingyo is cancelled - I'm sure sales just didn't justify the effort for Viz, but I enjoyed it. There was a sweetness about it, even when the stories were trite, that gave it a lot of charm. |
