I too thought that was weird. NASA has facilities in California, wouldn't that be a better place? Looking at Google Earth though, I do see that there is some fairly barren land in south Hartley County and in north Oldham County. |

Well, 6 days' walk from Amarillo, which probably puts them in New Mexico at the moment. |

What? It's only seventy kilometres from where they are to Amarillo. And the map that was shown to us had their starting firmly inside Texas. They weren't anywhere near New Mexico. |

70km is still well within Texas. The New Mexico border is about 100km west of Amarillo. Plus, they were also NW from Amarillo, which still puts them pretty far from both the New Mexico and Oklahoma borders.

Yeah they were up near the panhandle and if you're walking in that area I'm pretty confident it could take you 6 days to reach Amarillo.

So Nitta wants to go back? Why? To get cellphone reception so he can talk to his brother?
Couldn't he talk to his brother at a time when he's not out in the wilderness for six days? Hmm? |

Episode 49
spoiler[This survival training has been rather boring so far. I know they're just showing us why the need to this part, but it's still not interesting. They need something or someone to mix things up a bit. Their team is the worst so far and it's getting harder to endure. Nitta's attitude wasn't helping the situation at all. In the end all the problems they encountered improved the quality of this episode.] |

Going by the preview, it looks like Nitta may have accidentally left his cellphone behind or it fell out of his pocket while they were on one of their breaks. |

There's a reason. The explanation should come in the next episode. I was sooooooo annoyed when Vince was clipping his finger nails. They really do that in Japan too!! I've had co-workers (all male, of course) cut their nails in the office. So. Annoying. Do that at home!! |

Episode 50
spoiler[Nitta really made a mess of things. Namba proved himself to be a true friend. At least Nitta explained the reasons for the phone panic. It was an interesting story and it let us to get to know Nitta a bit better.] |

Considering all the saguaro cactus around, it looks like they've veered considerably off course into southwestern Arizona. I dunno, the whole cell phone storyline isn't sitting right with me. I can see special permission if a relative were dying any day now or something, but I just can't buy this. spoiler["I have to have my cell phone because my brother just might pick this week out of the last two years to call me, and gee, I'd hate to miss it."] And he does anyway. |

I thought it was silly that Nitta could go an entire day without realising that he no longer had his phone in his pocket. That's really stupid.
And wow, phones in the future sure have long battery lives. |

Though those phones of the future look nothing like where the industry has already moved in just past five years. Flip phones?
This show has a rather retro look despite being set a couple of decades hence. Things like the radio in Hibito's house and some of the telephones like his and the one the guy at JAXA used to notify the candidates especially caught my eye, along with the Corvette Stingray of course! The same OP where the Corvette appeared also panned over a 1950-ish Ford. |

Astronauts driving Corvettes is something of an American tradition:
http://jalopnik.com/5799011/why-americas-first-astronauts-all-drove-corvettes It is one of those things that is ingrained into the public (sub)consciousness without most people actually noticing. |
