The transfer student mentioned in the article is Ryuuko; someone translated a lot of interviews and story details in here: http://pastebin.com/HdQXbH2H http://pastebin.com/9cDsZjET Character profiles (Ryuuko IS the mysterious transfer student mentioned in the summary; she and Satsuki are the protagonists): http://sushiobunny.tumblr.com/post/49968152397/translated-character-profiles-matoi-ryuuko |

I honestly don't understand this view. I know that it can be exciting in the first three series you watch, but I don't see the point. Even if it doesn't go anywhere, an actual girl having actual romantic feelings for another actual girl - like Tomoyo in Cardcaptor Sakura or Kuro in Kodomo no Jikan - can and often does build something meaningful in the characters, their relationships or the ideas in the show.
Didn't PSG get thought up while the Gainax staff was drunk on some sort of holiday resort? I get the impression that giving these guys alcohol is a good idea.
Let's indeed. |

What, do you seriously think she would be upset if it goes beyond subtext into actual, full-blown, can't be denied, lesbian romance? SERIOUSLY?! Do people around here really think that when we talk about yuri subtext that we wouldn't be vastly happier with actual yuri/lesbians? Because I'm starting to think you do, which means that you completely miss the entire goddamn point. Yes, I want Ryuuko to be fastastically, amazingly, openly, gloriously gay. I think it would be absolutely amazing. I also know that that is basically impossible, so I'll live with it. But by [expletive] god I don't just want another series where the girl has to live knowing her love will never be returned, as is the case in both your examples. Christ. |

I said that badly.
I mean that completely aside from my appreciation of the yuri aesthetic (which is why I read any of it compared to yaoi), I don't understand the appeal of understated, you-could-remove-it-and-the-shows-and-characters-would-be-the-same subtext. I'd also prefer real stories involving girls who love other girls (one of my favourite genres, even), but compared to the cheap pandering variety where it doesn't go anywhere or mean anything, even the annoying one-sided love stereotype has actual storytelling potential. Enjoyablity: legit romance>>>one-sided affection>meaningless subtext>>>porn>>>lesbianism as comedy Storytelling-wise: legit romance>>>one-sided affection>>>porn>meaningless subtext>>>>lesbianism as comedy |

Because I like subtext?
You don't have to like it, but obviously some of us do. |

Gotta agree with ya on this one. I absolutely love yuri, but it gets really annoying when studios constantly show that they don't have the balls (vaginas?) to go all the way and just resort to teasing so they can grab those who are fine with just that without the risk of alienating anyone. The same could be said about incest in anime. I mean, I'll take subtext over nothing most of the time, but that doesn't mean I should just settle for it and shut up. inb4studiosarenttheretocatertoyourinterests. Alright then. I guess I can't help seeing it as a watered-down version of what I'm interested in. But I'm not saying I'm right in thinking that, that's just how it is to me.
Your usually somewhat discussion-limiting tactic of alternately ranting and being taciturn has actually allowed me to work around this in my head, thanks. |

When I say subtext, what I mean is shorthand for "a mutual potential relationship between the two leads that is not the center of the plot". You know, something so obvious that it doesn't even really need to be remarked upon, mainly because everyone is too busy doing plot-related stuff. This is mainly because I find most explicitly romantic subplots boring, regardless of the genders involved, unless they are woven into the overall motivations of the characters at hand. Ideally, said relationship would be made explicitly canon sometime down the road after I've grown frothingly attached to the characters and their interesting dynamic--as opposed to the assumption that romance makes characters interesting in and of themselves--but I'll take what I can get. |

It begins... Aniplex backing Trigger mean this will be huge, and could finally cement their status as the next Gainax.

It would be awesome, a spiritual Gainax successor I mean, but hopefully you are no wishing upon Gainax demise, Gainax has been responsible for so much awesome series, masterpieces, personally I want Gainax to continue being Gianax and rocking with new blood and Trigger to also succeed as well, anime as a whole will only benefit, it needs more studios like them to help get us out of current stagnation and bring us fresh, unique and revolutionary series like Gainax has done multiple times. |
