See The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya pages 48-50 for where this discussion emerged from.

http://www.christiananime.net/

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Christian Anime Alliance is considered a safe haven for Christians who have an interest in Japanese animation. Many fundamentalist Christian organizations have condemned anime for its excessive violence, themes of pornography, and for advocating immorality, Eastern philosophy or nihilism. However many Christian anime fans point out that not all anime has these qualities and that not all titles should be condemned. Many members of the site wish to use this site for evangelical purposes while others just wish to talk about anime. Although most members are not narrow-minded, the basic worldview of the site could be considered orthodox. However, bringing up ideas or philosophies that might conflict with these views usually results in censoring of the material, deletion or locking of a thread, and possibly a ban. The administrators of the site seek to stay away from controversial issues in order to keep a constructive atmosphere in the forums.

So, basically the mission of this site is to spread the word that anime isn't as evil as most religious folks with minimal knowledge of it make it out to be. Sounds like a good organization, right? Well, they have a list of anime that are banned from discussion because of their controversial subject matter and the heated debated that arise from mentioning them. These are:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
End of Evangelion
Evangelion: Death and Rebirth
Angel Sanctuary
Bible Black
Gravitation
FAKE
Yami No Matsuei
Earthian
Revolutionary Girl Utena
EDIT: AND ANY HENTAI

The moderators claim that they don't immediately ban anything they find offensive, and the people the use the forums have to have heated fights that involve name-calling and typing in caps with red letters and giant fonts from both sides, religious zealots and nonreligious people defending the series. Utena and Evangelion both fall into this scenario, but for most series the people running the site just slap a "no-no!" sticker on them because they don't like them. A search for Earthian, Yami No Matsuei, Fake, and Bible Black in only the thread title turn up no results. Gravitation gets a single five-post thread. What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I think this is only encouraging discrimination against gays, since every anime minus Evangelion had some sort of homosexual undertone/overtone. spoiler[Actually, Eva has the whole KaoruxShinji thing, too.]

Ah, a new thread I see.

I think that all the shounen-ai on the list should be replaced with a slew of hentai titles. Night Shift Nurses to start...

[EDIT] If a bunch of BL is on there, might as well put Cardcaptor Sakura on there too...there's some homosexual undertones...

I can see where they are coming from if threads regarding those series tend to be volatile. But to outright ban discussion of them is going a bit far, I think. Such things deserve (civil) discussion and shouldn't just be shoved under the rug.

I'm suprised they mention Bible Black by name and don't just ban all hentai. That would make a lot more sense.

Ok, what I don't get and maybe the list is just a small exerpt of a much larger list: how Bible Black is on there is kind of disturbing to me. Of course that of all titles SHOULD be on there but it's kind of saying the reason it is is because it has references to Christianity therefore vilifies the religion. But that should be nothing compared to the actual content of the show which is pornographic, sexually explicit and is full of demons and DGs. I mean there's tons of other hentai. Does that mean that because they are not on the list (and all of them aren't) that they are OK and Revolutionary Girl Utena isn't? That just sickens me.

I don't think you can narrow it down to discrimination against homosexuals for some of those titles; Utena and Angel Sanctuary had large amounts of incest, and that's a strong enough issue in itself to get a show banned.

Ah, forgot to mention all disscussion of any hentai is forbidden, too.

Ashley, the owner/founder of CAA wrote:
Hey everyone,

The staff has decided it would be extremely beneficial for us to post which titles we'd prefer not be discussed. These titles are either highly controversial, extremely inappropriate, or both. We have noticed all discussions in the past on these titles has only erupted into tension, rude posts, etc., (This is not true. Some series they just ban without any discussion.) for the sake of keeping the peace, these are the titles we ask you discuss privately amongst yourselves via PM or off-site:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
End of Evangelion
Evangelion: Death and Rebirth
Angel Sanctuary
Bible Black
Gravitation
FAKE
Yami No Matsuei
Earthian
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Any hentai titles whatosever, no exceptions!

If you have a suggestion for a title to be added to this list, please PM me. Violators will have their thread closed, deleted, and most likely a private chat with one of the staffers.

So then Koi Kaze would have to be banned even though it's a beautiful and touching love story?

Well, that makes more sense, but its still odd that Bible Black is specifically mentioned. And it's no suprise that Angel Sanctuary is on the list, though I still think that they shouldn't ban discussion of series period (other than hentai).

No. They use it to teach Sunday school. They like angels, just not when they're evil dinosaur looking things.

Talking is much better, than automatic condemnation. I hope they do find ones we like too, and will spread the good word of anime to people we would never be able to reach.

I don't expect them to like everything, I don't like everything.

Maybe this will mean more anime in my town. 3 Miyazaki's and one Blood, is not enough for me to keep renting from the local outlet.

They appear to be homophobic fools with little intelligence, from what I can see. If anything, they should be discussing Evangelion to determine their views regarding it, not banning it outright.

Well NGE uses the theory of Evolution quite prominently as a part of the plot and Christians aren't too hot on evolution the last time I checked Anime smile + sweatdrop

Except that Evangelion grossly misrepresents and misuses christian symbology, to the extent where it's merely a decoration. If it's the basis for your life/faith, then it can be conceived as fairly offensive.
