Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayl. It does not take long to show how brutally violent and serious it is.

But seriously I'd second trying to see what they're interested in if you really want to get someone into anime.

I gave up on trying to do that years ago-if they don't know or care it's their loss, not mine.

Would someone think it was "for kids" if they saw ... Sword Art Online?

Uhhhh.... A world composed entirely of plot holes featuring teenagers trapped in a video game? Not sure if best choice.

Well, it'd get them off the Pokemon jokes for two minutes, if that's what you're worried about...

(Yes, of course, every episode is "I just remembered, there's a super-rare Special item that does this that only I know about!", but, y'see, they don't know that.)

I think you'll have more problems proving that most anime isn't shit than convincing your friend(s) that anime is not only for kids.

Some medium is just not made for some people. I think you're wasting your time. I've spent half my life trying to convince my mom that anime is not only violence and porn -I even showed her Polar Bear Cafe, which made her fall asleep- but it's a lost battle

The short of it, is that you can't.

You can suggest anime for them to watch but in the long run its up to them to decide if they want to change their opinion. Just leave them be and live your life caring less about what other people think.

Opinions are like butt cracks, everyone has one and they all stink to somebody.

Well, an overview of all the categories should be a good way. Because while there are the "kid's" animes like Pokemon, Medabots, and Yu-Gi-Oh, there are also specifically violent, sexual, or social anime genres. If they don't want to see kiddy stuff, just direct them to a genre they are interested in. That may work?

That's prejudice. It's not easy to convince someone. In the West the belief that comic books and animation are just for kids is deeply entrenched into the subconscious mind of 99% of the population. Anyway, this belief is the product of plain ignorance. Cultured people know that mature animation exists.

I knew that anime wasn't for kids since I watched Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion when I was 11-12. They left me a bit shocked.

I think that Isao Takahata's films such as Only Yesterday and Grave of the Fireflies are good examples of truly mature animation (these two movies are certainly more mature than any mainstream TV series ever made in the US, for example, and 99% of anime TV series).

I don't consider the presence of sex and violence to be important elements in a mature show or movie. Instead I consider the presence and specially focus on these elements to be of a rather juvenile nature: teenagers love that kind of stuff.

In that regard I think that My Neighbor Totoro, with it's subtle and sophisticated exposition of the essence of childhood under the influence of Ozu's humanism and Italian neorealism as a more mature film than the Rebuilt of Evangelion movies, full of fanservice and violence.

My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday are among the best anime ever made for people over the age of 50. Another good anime film for old people may be Hosoda's Wolf Children. Although it is full of fantastical elements, like Totoro, it is also very naturalistic, which is what I think old people like.
