Oh that answerman....That captions is going to lead to some very dirty response I believe. Anywho the bootleg question was kinda funny to me, why are the sub so bad? They don't even know how to spell....... Moral of the story being kids don't buy bootlegs everytime you do an angel dies. Now is that what you want?
Till next time,

Actually, answerman made a mistake.
The limited edition official R2 FMA movie has English subtitles, and yes, they aren't the best. They are not awful, but they could be far better. They take a lot of liberties.

But yes, this guy was likely buying bootlegs.

I mean, my girlfriend got me the Full Metal Alchemist movie for Valentine's Day (which was awesome btw) but I had trouble making sense of alot of things that were said because of the way it was poorly subbed ( had to keep pausing and deciphering meanings).

Remember that R2 release of the FMA movie did contain English subtitles. If this indeed was the DVD that this person was given, then it was a valid question. Why would an offical release have such poor subtitling?

I've always found bootlegs rather easy to pick but maybe that's just me. However I'm not sure that the movie was a bootleg. Plenty of subs I've seen have been atrocious and I'm sure they weren't bootlegs because they have professional packaging and have been bought in a reputable store! Maybe Zac just isn't admitting that fansubs are often better quality...

The show that was talked about as being Lolicon, Kyou no Go no Ni, I don't consider as being loli. This is for two reasons. One, the characters in the show act and appear much older than they are said to be. Two, this show uses the watcher's perverse mind by showing suggestive scenes that always have another innocent meaning. This is where the show gets it's comedy. You laugh at yourself because you have been cleverly tricked by the show carefully guiding your mind. The show is only as perverse as you are.

As a footnote I abhor lolicon in all it's forms.

I've never firmly grasped the definition of a "lolicon".

Say you're watching an episode of Shakugan no Shana, and you then exclaim, "Damn, Shana is HOT!" Would that make you a lolicon, or would you have to be aroused by something erotic in nature?

Absolutely nothing about the rest of his letter suggests that this guy was buying legit DVDs. He did most of his shopping on eBay, as mentioned in the letter. It is simply common sense to deduce that he bought the bootleg FMA movie, considering that the original R2 non-limited DVD cost $42.

Also he mentioned having to pause it to decipher the subtitles. I doubt they were THAT bad on the R2.

It's great to nitpick and all but obviously the guy was buying bootlegs. Sheesh.

There's something wrong with this statement, but I can't put my finger on it.

The rant was nice, but not really debatable because almost all people here will probably agree with X-san. >< And your rant on lolicon was very warranted, Zac. I have the same feelings as you on that subject.

Very nice once again. Thanks. Wink

A long time ago someone passed me some old One Piece bootlegs and the subtitles were absolutely atrocious. It saddens me to think about all the duped fans out there watching the adventures of Roof, Sunkist, Surop and Crook Boo (god, those subtitles were horrible).

LMAO!

Haha I actually watched one of those bootlegs. It was horrible

I don't normally watch one piece. But the subs were hillarious. Sanji was Sunkist, and Usopp was Cheat Cloth.

I think the way bootlegs are translated is like this:

Japanese --> chinese --> english.

But i betcha they use an auto translator, that's why names are fully translated. (Also chinese doesn't translate well from language to language)

But what annoys me is that everytime i go anime shopping, bootlegs are abound. Before i knew it, the OSTs i got for 7 dollars (i though that price was too much for bootlegs) were bootlegs. (I might add, nice bootlegs, but still bootlegs)

You said there's "plenty of dub", but we're talking about subtitle here. And for the most part, the R1 subtitle are accurate, usually done by a professional. If you found one that isn't, please give example instead of making blank statement.

You still need a region 4 or free dvd player to watch it. And most people don't have region free dvd player unless you're heavy into buying Japanese at very expensive prices. There are so many people out there buying bootleg off ebay and not knowning it because of the colorful packaging.

Zac: So you have a problem with rorikon, but not CCS? Rolling Eyes
And how do you draw the line between mainstream and underground, when you got a perv like Akamatsu drawing a series like Negima?

Yep. Sorry about that. It is a typo. My "d" key is right next to my "s" key. Funny that.

While CCS may be enjoyed by pedophiles and lolicon fans, it wasn't targeted at that audience. It was made to be enjoyed by young girls and if others enjoy it, so be it.

And Ken Akamatsu isn't that bad in the fanservice department, relatively speaking. He's more or less on par with any other harem manga. Negima, after the first volume or two, doesn't even have that much fanservice. And the nudity is tame and undetailed, with nipples always covered by hair or just not drawn.

Card Captor Sakura was legitimately aimed at little girls and was a wholesome show. That a bunch of perverts decided to fetishize it isn't the fault of the show.

If you're trying to tell me that CCS is somehow the same as a series wherein the little girls are obviously sexualized then you have a screw loose.

But then you've said dumber things in the past.

I don't really draw the line at something like Negima. Shows like that and Bottle Fairy and Ichigo Marshmallow encourage the whole lolicon thing and I wish they'd go away already and stop trying to bring the whole "wow man little kids are totally sexy!" concept into the acceptable mainstream.

I said the last Answerman was the best yet... and this one was even better!? It's official: I am an Answerman fangirl and would like to bear Zac's children. It is my goal in life at the moment to have a question answered in this column, so I am in the process of thinking of one... wait for it, because it'll be so profound, my god!...

Um, anyway. I agree with what you said about bootlegs and lolicon 100%. Although I've never liked lolicon and think it's creepy, I didn't realize it was quite so big an issue until now. I hope the craze dies down before it does any real damage... not only to anime fans' reps, but also in real life. When a school shooting occurs, copycat school shootings follow; likewise, I think lolicon will desensitize people to real child pornography and child molestation. That's a sickening thing to imagine.

Another interesting aspect of lolicon is where to draw the line. A lot of anime characters, even if they're middle-aged, still look very young (Ryuichi Sakuma comes to mind). Is porn involving such characters acceptable, or is it too close to lolicon?

Lastly, recently the Strawberry Marshmallow anime/manga was released, which I haven't seen/read for myself, but I hear it reeks of lolicon. (Actually, the cover of the manga alone seemed a little iffy to me, because you saw up the skirt of one of the little girls.) Is this proof that lolicon is becoming more mainstream in the US? Was its release in bad taste? It's a bit presumptuous of me, because as I said I haven't seen/read it, but I'd go with a resounding yes.
