this is mostly popular with females. the genre of this manga is Sports , Comedy-drama.

Weekly Shōnen Jump are not just for male. They have manga to just target female. There was an interview in for Weekly Shonen Jump alpha in ANN, they said female and male are about 50/50 ratio.

Kind of sad that most of the female population that read this are reading for the wrong reason

There's no right or wrong reason

Sports and competitive event based shows don't sell in the US. But I think this would be the exception. However it's doing so well in Japan, they are not pressured to license it out cheaply
