now is it me or the not-buy list is considered "B titles" while the buy list is "A titles".... to me the titles that he listed are pretty popular to begin with and lot more people are willing to buy because of the name recognition sake, even if you're casual anime fan... so is fansub bad for anime industry? probably yes....ANY loss in sales IS technically bad for the company who needs money for their operations...do we REALLY need fansubs to know what's good or not? again, probably not....more and more rental carries anime titles...not to mention because of blogs, anime news sites such as www.animenewsnetwork.com and www.animeondvd.com, forums, and general anime fan sites, consumers can have some general idea of what the title is like before purchasing.... also if they're hesitant about pricing, companies more and more puts out complete boxsets, either thinpak or regular, after the series are out at lower prices than buying one at a time.... personally, if the people complain about pricing, i say get a rentals at netflix at $20 a month....if they can't earn $20 a month, then they're just too lazy to begin with or just bunch of whiny you-know-whats...... |

I'm curious to see what Answerman thinks of the whole Bandai saying not to fansub GITS SSS.
As for rabbits, I only like the baby ones. Some older ones are cute, but that's pretty rare. Although I am tired of this fansub debate by now, it had been a couple of months since the last one so can't we wait until November til we even mention fansubs again? I'm starting to think about getting Netflix. Many old titles I want to see but not pay the money for because I don't want to end up with crap... maybe I should fansub them since it's the same thing |

I prefer cute kittens over bunnies.
Not another fansub rant. Technically, it's all illegal. Just one form is slightly accepted (unlicensed anime) and the other isn't (licensed anime). All this rationalizing on the fansub side just points to them subconsciously worrying that it's illegal imo. My mind is at peace with the concept that downloading is technically illegal but tolerated at the moment if it's the unlicensed stuff. If the Japanese owner says "Please don't fansub", then you shouldn't do it.
It can hurt if you miss the date to cancel. Read the rules before signing up. Netflix is better than Blockbuster for anime imo. |

That's not saying much. I can count the number of anime titles that my local blockbuster mistakenly put in the children section (which is where all their anime is)...lets see...8 volumes of EVA 2 Eva movies, GitS 1, Ninja Scroll, Captain herlock vol. 1 and a couple volumes of edited titles. |

I've found Netflix to be great when it comes to anime rentals, but maybe that's just me. I live near Cleveland and get them in one day, and rarely have the DVDs shipped from anywhere other than the Cleveland netflix place or been on a wait. I've used them to check out a few shows, but usually I check them out through fansubs.
The thing is, I research them a lot before I even view them, so I've only watched two shows that I didn't end up buying on DVD, those being Wolf's Rain (which I saw on Adult Swim anyway) and Tenjou Tenge. With 200+ purchased DVDs and counting, I don't feel bad about using fansubs one bit. |

Boy, I'm actually getting kind of tired of debating fansubs, even though I've eagerly written paragraphs and paragraphs about the topic in the past. (Reading the equivalent "Bandai warns fansubbers" thread at AoD today didn't help ) For the time being, no matter what comes across these boards, I'm going to keep downloading, watching, and helping to create fansubs, because I feel like I buy "enough" to show support, at least more than the average downloader. I myself won't work on any licensed series, or any big-name series that will inevitably be licensed, like something in the FMP! series. I just stick to subpar "guilty pleasure" series that will probably never see the light of day here. Plus, since people who buy DVDs indirectly support the free entertainment of people who exclusively download, DVD buyers are being ripped off, in a way, unless they themselves also download.
I did have a comment on one thing, though...
GitS: SAC 1st & 2nd Gig ~ pre-licensed, fansubbed completely Ergo Proxy: pre-licensed, being subbed Hellsing Ultimate: pre-licensed, 1st episode subbed and no signs of stopping SaiKano OVA: prelicensed, subbed GunxSword: co-production, completed Kaleido Star: co-production, completed (eventually, and ADV's long delay of the second half probably encouraged subbers to finish it, since it wasn't subbed weekly as it came out) Samurai 7: licensed midway through, completed Madlax: license announced before last episode aired, dropped by 1 group, completed by others FMA: completed by patchwork of "anon" groups Fruits Basket: licensed shortly after completion, fansubs were not up-to-date, finished by a combination of decent groups and below-AnimeJunkies-quality bad groups ...not to mention Bleach, Naruto, and other currently ongoing series that are licensed and still being continued. |

I'm pretty tired of people bashing Spirits Within. If it was just called "The Spirits Within" without adding a "Final Fantasy" on there, I bet it'd have a lot more fans. Really the movie was pretty good, it just didn't have any thing to do with Final Fantasy. And judging by every game since VI that's probably one of the best things about it. Unlimited was terrible though.

Yeah I have to agree. I also enjoyed Spirits Within and I think most of the flak comes from Final Fantasy fans who expected a film like Advent Children (ie. pure fanservice). I personally think they pushed the boundaries of photo-realistic CG in Spirits Within to new levels of awesome. |

I hate to see people bashing Unlimited. Yeah, the plot develops slowly, but when it comes down ot it, the story is very deep, and I found the characters very lovable (except for Kaze). It's such a shame that the best part of the story was never made into anime because Square's budget for the show ran empty.
Which is my personal reason for hating Spirits Within. They made the mistake of naming the movie "Final Fantasy" and it cost them so much they had to halt FF:U. As for fansubs, all I'm going to say is that it's a pity not all of us live in a country where anime is as easily obtainable for rent or purchase. P.S. Kittens over bunnies. |

Indeed. Also, I've been always telling people the same thing about .hack/SIGN: it's one long, boring conversation set in nice scenery with decent music and no conclusion. |

finally someone says it! i agree 100% with this rant. a series should be fair game until it ends. to ask people to stop a series like Naruto or Once Piece that has no visible end in sight is just unreasonable. it's just as illegal as recording tv episodes, but no one complains about that.

Same game, different ballpark. See, making a tape for yourself would imply that at some point you watched it. also, there's only so much you can do with a tape before it begins to degrade. What's happening here is people are recording t, making a forever-lasting digital copy, and proceeding to give it out to people on a massive scale, hundreds to thousands of people. Can't do that with blank VHS's, reasonably speaking. |

I think the fansubbing issue is finally starting to die down. In an asnwerman man column that posts a rant that tries to illustrate the pros of fansubbing, people are more interested in the debate of whether bunny's are cuter than pandas. Now that's progress (as a sidenote, I really don't care what you post a pic of Zac, just please for the love of god never again put up anything involving The Hoff. I still get goosebumps from that image.) I will agree that Blockbuster has a selection that will probably anger you more than help you with a puchase. Hollywood Video has a damn good selection if you don't mind VHS though.

Ouch Zac, you ripped my heart out and thew it across the room. Yes SIGN was slow, but I really enjoyed it and I know the music was a bit annoying to hear the same pieces over....but it's a game and that how MMORPG work. So the series wasn't really for everyone, however I thought that it was a nice series that could standalone from the games. Even thought it did introduce us to the world, I still think that it's better then the current .Hack series (GU) because it's has it's own identity and unique story (and characters) to work with.
The games can be order from most online venues, infact I recieved an email from gamestop (Ebgames) saying how they have discount the four games so I would check that out if you were interested. I don't believe that you have to play throught the game to understand the series, but the game does make the "World" so much more interesting, as you learn about it's history and what makes it so special....But that said the games are bad....not the stories but the gameplay....I couldn't really recommend them to anyone, since half of the games battles are fought while on a pause menu.
If makes ya feel any better I would watch your show , could be interesting. You shaking your head at the different questions you receive each week, and how you plan to answer them with your witty humor.....I would buy that. It couldn't be worse then the Legend of the twilight anime. Till next time, Delta Kiral |
