Disney Japan seems to forget Walt Disney was something of a bigot. Not to mention the amount of western musicians Universal Music released there who did a lot of drugs. Hell, some of em are still doing lots I bet. Japan is a country in which uncensored porn is arguably worse than having a gun.

Leave it to Japan to take something they consider shameful, hide it under a rug, and pretend it never happened...

I wish America punished celebrities hard for drug use. Ah who am I kidding, they punish themselves by running themselves right into the gutter.

Unfortunately it ends up killing those with enormous talent like PSH, while Lindsay Lohan continues to live on.

I think Americans have the capacity to sympathize with those who had drug issues and are trying to reform, but I have no idea if that's even a thing in Japan, perhaps they're just indefinitely shunned and shamed after that. But, there's also the question of what kind of drugs and to what degree they're being used. An artist dropping some acid or smoking some dope? Big deal, that was the cause of the in music in the 60s and films like Easy Rider and Barbarella. Heroin and crack? Usually a harsher public outlook.

Query: Are the character designs for the two male leads in the video based on Chage & Aska?

If so, I understand pulling the film. I'd be disappointed, but I get it. If not - then it would have been far preferable to include the film, but without the vocal track.

Who is hiding what?
We are talking about a news story that came from several different sources.
It is all public.

Yep--It was their opening act, and they'd come out in costume.

(Although having one of the two look like Jigen was likely more Miyazaki's doing.)

it's not these companies, but the asian culture that's the problem. i don't understand how they think. they really think fans would boycott it cause the guy got a drug problem? it's the fans that get punished not getting this video. lesser product for the same price.

like recently in korea with the ferry sinking and a couple hundred dead. they shut down the entire pop music industry for like a month. so people died and that sucks, but why take away music from it's fans?

I am getting really tired of all of your ridiculous reactionary hypocrisy, Japan (and Asia in general). Shit's getting old.

Are you two really trying to generalise Asia to the point that Japan (and Korea) represent all the countries in the whole continent? and the largest one at that. Seriously, if you just know about a couple of countries/cultures just talk about those, no need to drag all the other countries and cultures you barely know anything about into it.

yeah i know about them well enough. let me guess, you're not even asian, right? another white person being "offended" on behalf of another race over nothing.

That is some massive bullshit. To think we almost had that music video in HD. It's not like you're showing Aska what for by doing this, you're just giving fans the middle finger. I can understand cutting current ties with someone who charged for things or says awful things, but to discount earlier works all together and pretend they never existed is just stupid.

Plus, as you said in a following post, it's not like he just made this and got busted and releasing a new thing on it's own could be seen as supporting him directly right after getting busted, Ghibli made this like 20 freaking years ago.

Would have been cool to finally see this in HD, it was a neat short.

Just watch out for the smart people ya know! Laughing

"Science Is Sure: Smart People Love Drugs"

  • With over 40 years of research to support their findings, a team of British scientists was slightly surprised to learn that people with higher IQs are much more prone to drug use. "It's counterintuitive," says lead author James White. "It's not what we thought we would find." And it's not for lack of trying either.

The Cardiff University team consulted data from 8,000 people in the 1970 British Cohort Study, a group of human lab rats born in the same week in April 1970 and surveyed approximately once every five years about a broad host of topics. The results found that subjects that tested above average on IQ tests at age 5 were twice as likely to have done hard drugs within the past year, when asked at age 30. The smart kids weren't just smoking pot, either; the numbers suggest that they prefer cocaine and ecstasy. White doesn't know exactly what caused the difference but he has a good guess. "The likely mechanism is openness to experience," he writes, "and, I think, it's also this idea of having an educated view of risk as well."

This is hardly the first time scientists have connected high IQ with drug use. Last year, evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa tracked a trend similar to that in the Cardiff study and also found that people with higher IQs were more likely to use drugs. He even took it a step further and offered a hypothesis of why. Kanazawa says that smarter people are attracted to "evolutionary novelties" like chemically processed drugs:

People — scientists and civilians alike — often associate intelligence with positive life outcomes. The fact that more intelligent individuals are more likely to consume alcohol, tobacco, and psychoactive drugs tampers this universally positive view of intelligence and intelligent individuals. Intelligent people don't always do the right thing, only the evolutionarily novel thing.

Kanazawa's theory would also support the latest findings. Because they require some basic, cocaine and ecstasy are evolutionarily novel in a way that marijuana is not. The good news for you smart people, however, is that even if you're more likely to try drugs, you're also more likely to kick the addiction faster.

We're talking about a Blu-ray box set to be released in Japan that costs hundreds of dollars and a short that is findable online. To say all complaints about this come down to whiny fans complaining about access is spectacularly inaccurate.

Unless you're prepared to argue why an ultimately futile attempt to excise an animated short from memory as if it had never existed makes sense just because of some musician's dumb mistake that has a tangential connection to the work of Miyazaki himself, you should be agreeing with us.

The thing is, these are cultural differences. So just calling it "stupid" isn't exactly progressive... ^^;

See, no...the "cultural relativism" ball doesn't fly very far. A given society doesn't get carte blanche to flout certain basic human rights just because it developed in a different way than another particular society, and the rest of the world has every right (and indeed the duty) to call them on it. In this particular example, the presumption of "guilty until proven innocent" is objectively worse than its opposite, due to the fact that the state has (essentially) unlimited resources to pursue a criminal case, whereas the vast majority of defendants do not. To balance this, the burden of proof is placed on the state: they're the ones who have to show beyond reasonable doubt that a crime was committed, and that the defendant committed it.

Just because something is "atarimae" (obvious, natural) in the society you live in and know does not mean it is so in all other countries. We cannot expect all countries to have the exact same justice systems and values as each other. It's not as if they're just throwing him to the dogs as soon as he is suspected- he will most likely have a fair trial to prove his innocence (or guilt).

How unfortunate. I already own (or have on order) the individual features coming in this collection, but I did ponder for a week or so buying it. This would not have been a deal breaker had I done that. Then again I'm not too big of a fan of that duo nor that segment in question.

I noticed that a forum goer from Japan referenced the Sakai incident. Man oh man was I afraid they were going to remove the music from the inevitable GunBuster BD box but it remained. Thank god now THAT would have pissed me off (GB is my all time favorite work of the medium, a true masterpiece in every aspect).

I would not use the word "whiny" but other than that saying that a lot of people are complaining about access is completely accurate.
The cost of the boxed set is irrelevant.

That is definitely not all that is happening in this thread.
There are people who are having reasonable discussions about issues other than how this affects them.

Quote:
Unless you're prepared to argue

I am not arguing. I am making an observation.
The complaints that people are making seem even more trivial to me because the boxed set has not been canceled. It is just being delayed for two weeks.
The fate of the collection of shorts has not been disclosed yet, that I know of.

I think that "guilty until proven innocent" applies mostly to society's attitude, especially the news media, rather than the legal system.
The accused still has to have his guilt proven in court before he can be convicted and sentenced.
I cannot cite a source for that because I am just working from memory.
