The complaints that people are making seem even more trivial to me because the boxed set has not been canceled. It is just being delayed for two weeks.
The fate of the collection of shorts has not been disclosed yet, that I know of.

But people are pissed because a short they like has now been trashed because two decades later the guy does some X. It's a real shame this box didn't come out before the drug news, otherwise it'd be far too late to enforce their bullshit. It's an overblown overreaction to a personal issue. Are fans not allowed to voice themselves when something they want is taken away? And no one thinks the entire boxset has been cancelled, we can goddamn read.

I applaud Japan's stance and zero tolerance on illegal drugs.

I hope their stance on this endures or else they risk devolving back to the age of warring clans.

I assume royalties are the main issue. If it was released with his work in it, he would be paid for each box set sold. The company would rather not fund his pockets anymore so it will be removed so no payments are made to him.

How could they do this? What the hell is wrong with Japan? Why is their drug policy so damn backward?

Just because something is "atarimae" (obvious, natural) in the society you live in and know does not mean it is so in all other countries. We cannot expect all countries to have the exact same justice systems and values as each other. It's not as if they're just throwing him to the dogs as soon as he is suspected- he will most likely have a fair trial to prove his innocence

I agree.

The new world of the Internet is full of contradictions. People in country X can now have the fantastic experience of being exposed to the indigenous entertainment media of other cultures! Along with that entertainment come, naturally, many elements of the way of life of other country Y. For me, this great opportunity for discovery has arrived only after a long lifetime of pre-Internet days when the only culture and entertainment tropes I could ever hope to have access to were American. And believe me, those were narrow and tiresome!

It truly is pointless to criticize the way other countries do things, unless they're truly vicious or barbaric. Without the cultural differences, the entertainment and novel ideas we love wouldn't be so surprising and delightfully different as they are. There's no way to get the good without being exposed to the bad.

I agreed too!!! I mean what happen on this thread (before Tony K cleaned it up) was ridiculous.

Back on topic, I just got something from NHK World, I'll quote this since articles from NHK World don't last long on the website:

NHK World wrote:

Pop star ASKA admits to drug possession, use

Tokyo police say pop star ASKA has admitted to illegal possession and use of stimulant drugs.

The member of popular music duo CHAGE and ASKA was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of carrying illegal stimulants on 2 occasions last month at an apartment of a female acquaintance in Tokyo.

Police say the 56-year-old musician, whose real name is Shigeaki Miyazaki, initially denied the allegation.

Investigators confiscated from his home in Tokyo powder believed to be enough stimulants for more than 10 uses and a glass pipe apparently used to inhale the drug.

Investigators say urine and hair tests they conducted on Miyazaki were positive for stimulants.

Tokyo police plan to bring additional charges of drug use against Miyazaki next week.

The acquaintance, Kasumi Tochinai, is reportedly still denying drug possession charges.

CHAGE and ASKA are very popular in not only Japan but also other countries and areas including Singapore and Taiwan.

So I wonder now if any anime clubs-as an act of solidarity-will be lighting up and passing around a bong while watching the short. Rolling Eyes

You don't justify one wrong with another wrong.

And as for the issue at hand, of an artistic work from a few decades ago becoming collateral damage in the present when fallibility of Man proves itself too true, well, just my opinion but I'd define that as going slightly overboard....

That is some massive bullshit. To think we almost had that music video in HD. It's not like you're showing Aska what for by doing this, you're just giving fans the middle finger. I can understand cutting current ties with someone who charged for things or says awful things, but to discount earlier works all together and pretend they never existed is just stupid.

Now you know how I feel about wanting certain Hollywood studios to release their backlogged catalog of forgotten classics in some way, shape or form either through physical/digital means, even if it meant only those like me would give two s--ts for it.

walw: It's a cultural thing. The Japanese really don't tolerate drug use.

Clearly nothing like the supermarket tabloid newshounds that make it their thing to exploit the issue beyond comprehension all they want.

Preacherofdoom wrote:
it's not these companies, but the asian culture that's the problem. i don't understand how they think. they really think fans would boycott it cause the guy got a drug problem? it's the fans that get punished not getting this video. lesser product for the same price.

Lord knows at least we'll still have our previous commercial releases or pirated copies to contend with for as long as this'll be (it hasn't stopped certain titles I know very well from still getting out there).

like recently in korea with the ferry sinking and a couple hundred dead. they shut down the entire pop music industry for like a month. so people died and that sucks, but why take away music from it's fans?

Lord knows imagine if Sony or UMG pulled that stunt over here whenever something like that happened. Of course it would be over-the-top outrageous, but I feel they deserve it for being monolithic jerks the same.

This kind of hypocrisy is one of the few things I truly hate from Japan.

There're many ways to hate Japan, but I'll just give you two words to start off the ball, Issei Segawa.

koinosuke wrote:
This is just about the most stupid thing I've ever heard. Nothing less from Japan when it comes to how they treat drug use, though. They make American law look progressive.

And it's really too bad. "On Your Mark" is a wonderful creation, and it would've been great to see it in HD.

Lord knows I'm sure plenty were waiting for that.

mewpudding101 wrote:
This has been done with artists in the past, not just Aska. Although drug culture is illegal in America, it's kind of accepted as kind of a cultural norm for celebrities.

The stories my mom could tell of having once been in that crowd in the 60's would take up too much time to rattle off here. Needless to say she never got a record contract simply for not starting.

lizardking461 wrote:
Apply this mentality to the music industry on a global scale and it would collapse over night. Then again, Japan's 'music' industry is abysmal in more worrying ways than this, so meh.

Still I wouldn't mind seeing it happen to the big three (UMG, Sony and Warner Music).

mrsatan wrote:
Unlike the US, where we have impressionable young people watching celebrities get charged with crimes and then get away with them with no consequences. What kind of example is that?

Morality has no chance around here.

Just a little cultural explanation from someone who lives in Japan

Out of curiosity, what are their reactions to western artists who used drugs?

Although she's not a western muscian, Paris Hilton was banned from entering Japan over drug charges.

EDIT: The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger was banned from Japan over drug use and had to cancel their 1973 tour dates

Paul McCarthay is also another person banned from Japan as well.

Ha-ha!

And yet we never learn.

So it looks like Japan sort of forgive Paul McCarthy for doing drug from what I'm reading from those articles.

That or the guys who banned him previous are dead now (it happens).

ATastySub wrote:
Just to get this straight. When news about how the Japanese Music Industry handles sex, something completely legal and healthy, in their contracts there's a strong forum opinion to defend them because "it's in the contract," yet when it comes to drugs, something actually illegal, suddenly the contract shouldn't matter?

Reminds me of a podcast I listen to that pretty much lays out all the problems Japan has.

Well at least it wasn't released in a compromised fashion (editing the song out or other visuals, which would be my last resort in all this).

That could be another reason. But I'm putting my bet on forgiveness.
