I'm a little surprised that various manga-ka didn't band together and draw porn as a means of protest. Imagine if 80% of all active manga artists -- especially those working on popular titles like Attack on Titan and One Piece -- submitted nothing but over-the-top sexually explicit chapters to their publishers for an entire month. Would the publishers just fire 80% of their workforce and fill in the gaps with a bunch of amateurs and nobodies? Or would all the publishing companies go begging the government to try and repeal this law for the sake of their own careers?

Or maybe Hayao Miyazaki should draw and write some over-the-top sexually explicit manga of his own, now that he's done making movies. I can't help but imagine the shake-up that would occur when people found out that one of their own national treasures made something that was banned by their own government.

Except that it would do little because the publishers didn't create the law, and most publishers didn't want it in the first place. I am sure there was plenty of backroom begging going on long before this which was all for naught.

hmm I don't know for sure, but I'm not sure Hayao Miyazaki is as against this as you'd think. Some of his comments would suggest he's not too found of this aspect of the industry.

Aiko is a schoolgirl that all her friends are menstruating and not her. She goes home to her her room and reads up on menstruation and punches herself in the uterus in frustration.
This seems to "awaken" Ma-chan, her anthropomorphic vagina, who begins coughing up blood. Ma-chan introduces herself and says that she's been with her ever since birth and from now on she's going to assist in her journey into adulthood.
The next day at school Aiko tells her friend that she's now one of the gang.

I actually want to read this. Stories about kids dealing with growing up are usually pretty good.

It's not always easy to beg for something based on what may happen, because there's no guarantee the "other side" is going to believe you. I happen to hold the belief that publishers having to deal with what is essentially a striking workforce would give them the hard evidence they would need in order to have a shot at successfully begging for a repeal. It would be less "What could happen to our business?" and more "Look what's happening to our business!"

Oh yeah, I forgot about that article. I could go on some BS tirade about how "Miyazaki is against fanservice as a story replacement, not against nudity in general," but it's too easy for me to imagine him having a distaste for nudity in anime/manga as a result of what the over-reliance of fan-service has done to everyone's ability to write a good story. Plus I'd have to go find the article and re-read it a couple of times to make sure I was "right," and even then there'd probably be too many holes in my argument.

I could have sworn that someone from Ghibli made a statement against this ordinance, but that says nothing about what Hayao himself thinks.

Bear in mind that this cancellation had nothing to do with enforcement of a law.

The editorial departments at Coamix and Takuma Shoten canceled publication in light of potential trouble. However, there is no definitive suggestion that the manga would've been blacklisted by law.

As the article states, "Imouto Paradise 2" was the first title to be formally restricted by the government; any previous cancellations would've been pre-emptive moves on the part of publishers, who (rightly or wrongly) feared a negative assessment. In short, they didn't want to risk money on titles that might not be allowed in stores.

No, that is wrong.

Anything is classified as "formally not affected" even after the ordinance committee cites and requiress a publication to be removed off the shelves. It is ONLY when the book is REPRINTED as 18+ and sold restricted in stores, then it is classified as "affected".

Aki Sora

Midori no Kisetsu

for how Oku-sama wa Shōgakusei (a non-explicit whatsoever gag-manga) used exactly the same workaround as this -- by publishing online on Ken Akamatsu's (Love Hina's author) site instead.

Bill 156 has what is called a chilling effect and this is a prime example of that.

With that picture of a girl that looks under 13, if it's a series with varying amounts of fanservice, I actually do adhere to t the regulation of such series (I didn't say ban) to an extent.

It doesn't have to be "looks like under 13". The law states either depicting a character under 18 or depicting a "minor", which would be under 20 (I think it's actually the later). One of the mangas affected above dealt with regular sexual relationship between highschoolers. Of course this raises the illogical question of how you actually determine a fictional person's age. In any case, this is a gag-manga that deals with girl going through puberty so it's appropriate. Also, it IS a ban since not only would you have to trash existing copies, it bans certain ways of printing your property, and it bans certain ways of selling it.

Anyways, people need to remember that the bill targets subject matter first and foremost, hence the judgement via "disruptive of social order", as well as citing specific topics. Of course the problem that you can't decide that for everyone. It's total bulshit. A manga challenging Japan's drinking age laws would be a prime target for example.

One problem, since when does things like puberty (without actual sex) become "disruption of social order", it's a natural event. Also a manga challenging any controversial law would most likely be in some business manga related publication or a publication for salarymen far away from children

The problem mighjt be with the girl physically abusing herself so that she can be one of the gang.
That is not something that I would want to encourage.

If you've seen the Simpsons, it's exactly like the joke in the season 6 episode Fear of Flying, where Homer says "Shut up, liver!", punches himself in the liver and then says "Ow, my liver hurts."

Wow. I took a look at the manga. Well, that's a new concept! I can honestly say I've never seen that in a manga before.

I'm not saying I'm for them not publishing this, but I absolutely get why they did!
