The problem is that a lot of people see it as either "porno cartoons" or kids shows. The fact that Miyazaki movies, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball Z are widely known, feeds the latter stereotype, while peoples' general ignorance of anything outside of that, along with how anime is typically represented in the media, feeds the former.
And this, of course, leads straight into that discussion on fan-service...
In anime there are a lot of shows that are, by and large, very high quality, but still aren't really accessible to a lot of people simply because of their sexual overtones(and common folk's prudish sensibilities). I'm not about to sit down with a co-worker and show them GiTS because they will very likely be appalled as soon as they see Motoko show up in that thong-like spandex thing she is always wearing.
I'm not against fan-service personally, and I couldn't care less if someone else likes, approves of, or is even aware of the existence of my fandom, but that is pretty much how it works.

I only ever hear that from rural Southerners and some old people nowadays. A lot of mainstream young folks are a bit more careful with their words and don't resort to labeling. Guess we have political correctness to thank for that in a way.

Ugh, both my brother and my dad call it "Chinese porno". Sometimes they at least remember to call it "Japanese porno". I usually just sigh and tell them it's not all like that, because you can't deny hentai exists, after all.
For someone who is actually curious I usually tell them it's honestly very similar to regular TV, just animated. There's plot and all sorts of genres. There's something for everyone - mystery, romance, drama, adventure, sci-fi... little kiddy stuffy to stuff aimed at older crowds, just like how our shows are here. I also tell them that not everything in Japan is animated.
More and more these days as I get out there in the "adult world" (I'll be 27 next week), I find more people are anime fans than you'd expect. A lot of just "regular looking people" who are into it. At my new job, the guy next to me took a chance and mentioned the new Naruto manga chapter. I didn't say anything about liking anime so I'm not sure if he took a complete shot in the dark or if he caught sight of the old key chain I have on my keys but you never would have, in a thousand years, pegged this guy as an anime/manga fan. Same with the girl behind me, she mentioned loving J-Dramas and after talking, she also likes some anime...And I like that... because most of can and DO exist in normal society, despite what the news wants you to think haha.

There is an extra feature on one of the Infinite Stratos discs that shows the animation staff putting together layers in After Effects. It was pretty cool! My favorite part about it was playing "I Spy" with the stuff in the studio lots of character goods sitting around.

Both are terrible. "Cartoons with the ungodly big eyes" is the way to go.

Is hand drawn cell animation become a thing of the past, then? Everyone is using Renderman and Paintman and it's all virtually the equivalent of Flash animation epidemic in US shows?

I'm of the mindset if you're too embarrassed to admit you like anime, it's your problem, not the mediums. I also have to question why people value the opinion of those kinds of close-minded people so much. Insecurity is not an attractive quality.
Fanservice is just a cultural difference, though. People don't bat an eye when a live-action movie or show has fanservice in it, and most of them do. However, since animation is seen a thing for kids here, the idea of fanservice in a cartoon seems weird to them. These are the same kinds of people who probably have no problem watching a National Lampoon movie. No real sense worrying about them.

Cel animation is, but some artists still use paper for character line-art. No one's going to be hand-inking the transparent cels, layering them, and then photographing them onto film unless they're rich hipsters.

Did you know that some people employ others? And the employers' opinions of employees can make or break careers? That makes their opinions valuable.

The thing I have trouble admitting is the extent to which I like it :p I religiously clean and dust my media and figure shelves weekly I also organize my postcard, book, and obi boxes (I sort and stash all of them) monthly probably. Simply put I'm obsessed. I can spend hours just looking at line art galleries and storyboards. I really do love it that much.

But even then, I wouldn't call you obsessed, just enthusiastic. And cleaning your stuff weekly is really just good hygiene. I think it really only becomes a problem if anime is the ONLY thing you can talk about. Otherwise, most people I've run into just treat it like another hobby.
